    1. Re: [IRL-WICKLOW] Buckley and Monastery House

    3. Thanks for kind words. I haven't come across Halpin or Dillan, but Buckley was a very well established name in Enniskerry in the 19th century. They ran the Powerscourt Arms hotel in the late 1800/early 1900's (see this article for a story on that http://enniskerryhistory.org/home/index.php/archives/172) and a Lawrence photo shows a shop in the village with the Buckley sign over it - this would have been well into the early 1900s. As far as I know, there are no Buckleys left today. More interestingly for you though, I came across a map in the Powerscourt papers which shows the Monastery townland. Monastery is just north of the village, and Monastery house about 10 minutes walk from the village centre. The map is undated, but a few clues indicate it would be about 1830. It shows "John Buckley's land" (which would mean it was leased from Powerscourt, and "John Buckley's house", right about where Monastery house is. Edward Ward was a very close neighbour. Perhaps Thomas married May Ann and they moved into Monastery house? So given Buckley's strong business presence in the village, I wouldn't be surprised if they did live at Monastery. Richard (1838), John Charles (1886), Benjamin (1756), Francis and John (1766), Richard (1796), Thomas (1837), Robert (1849), Benjamin (1846), Francis (1862), Henry (1856), John (1883), Francis (1896) and Isabella Buckley (1912) are all mentioned in the Powerscourt papers for leases at various stages. I haven't looked, but there must be more listed in Griffith survey, which would be around the time you are interested in. It might be worth your while posting to the discussion board on the website, as some locals who mightn't look at genealogy forums might see it and know more.
