Have any of you to begin with trawled through the archives of this list, and looked at any of the BYRNE data that is held there? You need to do this as this name invariably is discussed on this list and much has been placed in the archives. Every Byrne family had the good RC names of John, Patrick, Michael,so this will be a slow process of elimination to locate your family in Ireland, ( big sigh) we are all it appears on here doing one line or another of the Byrne name, it isnt easy being a Byrne rellie. Rathdowne Union as was asked about does cover part of Wicklow and if your girl was a true orphan - which sometimes they were not complete orphans sometimes they were half orphans one parent having gone to get work sometimes in America etc, at around this time frame there was a dumping of "orphans from the insitutes" as you say it does say no relative in the colony they in fact meant colony Australia unless you see the word as colony and it should read county. But in my papers I do have this taken from the Rathdown Indoor Relief Union registers 1847-1850 , Orphans to Australia which is appears it may be your lass, Catherine Byrne, aged 13 years, Roman Catholic was healthy and clean when admitted was last admitted on the 1st August 1848 discharged for Australia 15th August 1849..... now the one piece of information that may assist you is that her Origin or electoral Division was Killiney Co Wicklow I have not looked at my data base as yet but will, I am very interested in these orphan girls and have asked in the past if anyone was aware of what happened to them, so I would like to know what became of your lass, and what her future held for her. Whilst I could if you so desired add history on this subject it will take time to compile it together, I dont have anything more immediately on her family at hand - I will of course look in the data base asap. That offer also applies to the other folk looking for Byrne data .... But this weekend is busy for Cara we are ( countless folk) doing a fund raiser for flood victims here in Australia. So I will return to this subject by Monday Cheers Cara
My g-g-grandmama and her sister came here a Famine Orphan in 1850 via the Tuam workhouse (yes, folks, Co. Galway). Both of their parents are shown as being alive. So they weren't even been half-orphans! Don't think there would have been a shortage of orphans in Co. Galway - it fared much worse than Co. Wicklow in the Great Hunger. In 1855 the girls paid passage for their mother and younger sister to come out. Mother is then shown as a widow. There's my "take it with a grain of salt" bit. As for my Wickow Mary Bryne/s - I think my best chance is to catch up with her "on the other side". Cheers Barbara
How do we get to the archives please Cara?
Hi Cara (and everyone else) Thank you very much for your information. I have not been able to prove conclusively one way or the other if the Catherine Byrne in my husband's family tree is the Catherine Byrne listed below as arriving on the 'Lismoyne', but per her death certificate her father's name was Christopher, and she named her second eldest daughter Rosanna (her first being named Bridget, the same name as her husband's mother), and per her daughter Rosanna Clancy's birth registration, her birthplace was Dublin Ireland, aged 23 [so born ca 1835]. Per her death certificate, Catherine was listed as being born in Wicklow Ireland, and in the colony for 50 years [so arrived 1849],her father is listed as Christopher Byrne, mother unknown. http://www.irishfaminememorial.org/orphans/ships_nsw.htm Famine Orphan Girl Ships to Australia Shiplist: Lismoyne Arrived 29 November 1849 SRNSW 4/4911 Reel 2459 Surname First Name Age Native Place Parents Religion Other Byrne Catherine 15 Dublin Christopher & Rosanna (both dead) RC Rathdowne Union. Empl. G Y Yarnton, Glebe, £6-8, 3yrs. Im. Cor. 50/686 27 Aug 1850 Bathurst; 4/51 indentures cancelled, Molong. My Catherine Byrne married Denis Clancy on 23 Sep 1853 in Bathurst New South Wales at St Michael's Catholic Church, and died at Cargo NSW on 19 Feb 1899. So she was in the Bathurst / Molong area after this Catherine Byrne's indenture was cancelled at Molong in 1851. Your thoughts (or anyone elses) on whether it is likely that they are the same Catherine Byrne would be most welcome. Helen, Have you tried the Irish Family History Foundation - http://www.rootsireland.ie/ I have found my g-g-grandmother's baptism record and, from another Wicklow family, the baptisms of three of 8 children of another family. So the records are a bit patchy. But could be worth a shot if you haven't already tried. You have to register (free) to search, then it costs 5 Euro to view each record. You can only enter father's forename - no luck with Christopher, but there is one baptism for a Catherine, father Chris, 1832 Wicklow. If you pay to view, it should give the mother's name, and quite likely the sponsors. Cheers Barbara
Sorry Cara. I think I forgot to attach the Jones list I have. Can you tell me how any of these are related? Hope we can connect some to my Robert Jones b 1799. Thanks Carol N
