Looking for information on (a) the ancestors of Thomas Gresham and Elizabeth Harris (Church of Ireland) who married on 5th September 1888 in Delgany - Thomas Gresham's parents/origins unknown, Elizabeth Harris's parents were Thomas Harris and Hannah Evans, they had three other children that I know of apart from Elizabeth - Hannah, James & Thomas. (b) the ancestors of Anthony Kelly & Julia Mooney (Catholic) who married on 26 November 1885 in Little Bray and who lived in Bray. Anthony's father is shown as also being Anthony and Julia's father is shown as Denis Mooney but she is shown on the 1911 census as having been born in England yet all her siblings are shown as born in Wicklow. Hi all, My Wicklow ancestor was James Byrne, who was born in Annamoe Co Wicklow in 1769. Whilst unconfirmed, I believe his parents were John and Nancy Byrne, and that John may have been a carpenter or ran a sawmill. James was transported to Australia in 1801, on board the "Anne", after being tried for "treasonable and seditious practices", and was sentenced to 7 years. In 1812 he married Sarah Franklin in Sydney in 1812. He died in Collector N.S.W in 1849. Whilst James' life in Australia is well documented, not a lot is known about his life in Ireland. If anyone could point me in the direction of where to start finding more information, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Penny Canberra Australia

Hello Colette I think in all honesty for archives reasons I would send them in lots of Two if not singular, and of course add in both or all surnames to the subject line, so that folk that do not join the list, when looking at archives find you. Cara
Hi List New to this list I have just received the marriage of Patrick CROFTON & Catherine DOYLE at Valleymount Wicklow on the 11 Jan 1827. Shame no parents where on there, they were RC, witnesses were a Patrick MURPHY & a Jacob AUTTY ? which doesn't seam right. Would there be anywhere else that may of had parents names on the marriage kept. So Wicklow was a surprize for me & much earlier than I thought as they are in Sallins Kildare later where 4 children were born. One been my great grand mother Winifred CROFTON in 1851. I did find two Patrick's born in 1827 & 1830 to them in Valleymount, then next is in Kildare a Larry/Laurence 1843 Myles 1846 William 1849 then Winifred in 1851 so I have a big gap of 13 years, so they must of had more children born to them in Wicklow or Kildare. I have just found out about a Thomas, when Laurence was found in the Canal in the newspaper in 1902 it had Thomas his brother indentified him. I think this Thomas may of married a Mary TEELY & had children there is also a Ann Crofton who married a Michael TEELY. A child of their Andrew TEELY born 20 July 1862 St Nicholas in Francis St Dublin, living 49 New St Dublin had a Laurence CROFTON as a godparent. Thomas & Mary also where living at 49 New st when they had a child Mary Catherine 1 July 1862 (C) at St Nicholas in Dublin. Also Thomas may of married again to a Elizabeth MOONEY in 1872, they are on the 1901 census as a Lock keeper for the canals. There may of been another child Ellen Crofton who married a James MURRAY & then a Joseph ALDRIDGE 8 Oct 1872 as Joseph is a witness on the marriage of Winifred CROFTON to Joseph POWER 4 Aug 1874 at Kill Kildare my great grand parents, both Joseph's were in the army. Thank you for any help. Jennette

I am trying to find out what happened to the children (Roman Catholic) of JOHN BYRNE and DOROTHY FITZPATRICK, born in The Fishery/Garden area of Arklow: Mary Byrne b. 4 Jan 1864Ann Byrne b. 20 Oct 1865Michael Byrne b. 20 Oct 1870 There was also Elizabeth Byrne (my gg-grandmother) b. 13 August 1868 who married Michael Kavanagh (gg-grandfather) in Dublin in April 1889, but I know all about them. John Byrne was a fisherman/mariner, who is supposed to have drowned at sea, but I've never been able to confirm that story. A son (Michael??) is also supposed to have drowned, although not in the same incident. I'd also like to know when Dorothy/Dora died. I think it must have been pre the 1901 census. Although there are at least 2 Dora Byne's on the 1901 & 1911 censuses, neither seem to be "mine". Thanks in advance for any help or advice. Colette
I have direct and not so direct relationships with all of these surnames that passed through County Wicklow. All were Roman Catholic. I'm guessing that at some point the Jackson's originated in England and I know the Stakem's have roots in Germany. All of these families had members make their way to Allegany County in Maryland, USA primarily in the latter half of the 19th century. You might have a different spelling of my surnames. There's too many to provide a description. If you have one of these surnames or a close variation, please contact me directly or on this message board. I will be happy to share my information with all. Bob Thompson Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA
Hello, This is the first time I've ever used this email group so I hope I'm doing this right...! I have a photocopy of my Great Grandfather Thomas' Eire birth certificate and his NZ marriage certificate so will give those details below. >From the birth certificate I have a few details of Thomas's father and mother but I don't know anything else about my ancestors.. Religion: CATHOLIC Thomas Doyle Born: 26 September 1888, Brook, Arklow Birth cert number at top left of page R 173. Date on the birth cert (at bottom left of the page) 16th October 1947 A sentence under the main table of birth cert info states ''I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true copy of the entry No. 362 in the register book of birth in my office the General Register... ('my office' phrase has been crossed out and the rest is cut off the photocopy) Thomas will have a number of siblings, 1 named Daniel I think. Thomas moved to New Zealand (possibly Timaru) with his family at some point and married Essie Atalanta Callahoe Bruce on 31 January 1917 in St Mary's of the Angels, Wellington , New Zealand. Thomas's father Daniel Doyle was a Fisherman (stated on Thomas' birth cert) and as a Seaman (as stated on Thomas' NZ marriage cert) Daniel Doyle married Esther Phillips..... All I know of Daniel is that he brought his wife and family to NZ to escape harsh conditions (some family have said famine) etc... Thank you Cara Rachel Ann Doyle Wgtn, New Zealand -- R :)
Hi all, my Higgins's came over from Cornwall, England c 1867, to run the Avoca mines. Mine Captain James HIGGINS 1842-1920 and his wife, Sarah Jane 1846-1936, lived in Tigroney House, Avoca. One of their 16 children, Sydney Patrick 1886-1964 married Ellen JOHNSON 1889-1964, my G'parents, and settled in Mill House farm, Kilcarra, where they produced 16 children. My Dad, Joel (Jim) James HIGGINS 1928-date, was second youngest and still a great source of info' and willing to answer any queries. Dad and most of his siblings worked in the famous Avoca store/shop, that was owned and ran by the Johnson family for most of the mid 1900's Apart from a couple of Christian Bretheran, dippers as they were known locally, the rest were Cof I. My tree is available to view, free of charge, to anyone related or interested. Love to hear any info' of the other 6 mine Captains brought over with Capt James to run the mines, employed by William of Scorrier, Cornwall. Cheers, Jim Higgins UK
Looking for marriage record of Daniel Doyle and Ann Byrne(s). Daniel Doyle of Co Kildare m. Ann Byrne(s) of Co Wicklow abt 1838. First child, Elizabeth, was baptized 30 Sep 1838 at St Bridget's Church, Talbotstown, Rathvilly Parish, Co. Wicklow. Witnesses were Thomas Byrne and Margaret Byrne. Believe Thomas may have been Ann's brother (or father) as second son of Daniel and Ann is named Thomas. Family emigrated about 1842-44 settled in Portsmouth, RI, then later Bristol, RI and had 7 other children. Daniels' death certificate (1872) gives his parents as Patrick and Bridget but none of their children had those names so I can be sure of this. Ann Byrnes Doyle lived until 1905 and was about 90. Elizabeth Doyle married Thomas Kelleher and moved to Philadelphia and was my great-grandmother. Madeline Kelleher Lopes Gibbstown, NJ

My great-great-grandfather was James Fitzpatrick. He died in Washington, District of Columbia, on 22 Mar 1930, and is buried at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. According to the Washington, D.C. Death Certificate, he was born in 1841 in Dublin, Ireland - I previously had 1846 in County Wicklow, Ireland. His headstone at Mt. Olivet has 1846-1930. This Death record also lists his father as Jos. Fitzpatrick, born in Dublin, Ireland; and mother as Mary Burns, born in Wecklow, Ireland. James came to America about 1855 (per Census records - cannot find immigration record) with sister Mary A. Fitzpatrick, and possibly another older sister, Catherine, who was married to John Burns. Cannot find any record of Joseph and Mary having come to America. The family was Catholic and attended St. Aloysius and St. James Parishes in Washington, D.C. James wife, my great-great-grandmother, was Catherine Cullen (1860-1926), born in County Wicklow. Her Washington, D.C. Death Certificate lists on the last names of her parents, Cullen and Burns. Cheers, Michael Kent Island, Maryland
