    2. Great read! Got to ask is the Toole one of yours Cara, Im pleased to see hes not a baddie, but hanker for one of mine to be named anywhere good or bad. Carol ----- Reply message ----- From: "Cara" <cara_links@bigpond.com> Date: Fri, Mar 2, 2012 07:15 Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] Secret Society 1823, Coogan+Kavanagh+Fenlon+Toole To: <irl-wicklow@rootsweb.com> With permission from Michael Purcell 2011 [ Note added by Michael Purcell, 2012. The is a reference in the following report to swearing an oath "to be true to Moll Doyle" The "Moll Doyles" were one of the many secret societies operating during this period. They were feared by most of the population and considered by many to be robbers and murderers. In Donal McCartney's book "The Dawning of Democracy 1800 - 1870" (page 93) we read for the period 1821 : "A group calling itself the "Moll Doyles" was appearing in arms in Rathvilly, Co. Carlow, and attacking the houses of tenants who had offended against their agrarian code. A gang of thirty or forty had burned a house in King's County, shot a man, driven a bayonet in the eye of a woman and tried to cut out her tongue - she died the next day from her injuries and her mother died a few days later from shock. ". In the following report it appears that one of the "Moll Doyles" has turned informer.] >From Pat Purcell Papers 1823. The Informations of James Coogan of Killilish in the County of Wicklow. Who being duly sworn and examined Saith That in the month of February 1820 James Gorman of Woodfield ( with others now in custody ) in the County of Wicklow broke open a house on the lands of Tankardstown in the County of Carlow and took thereout a Keg of whiskey and brought same to the house of Laurence Kavanagh of Rathdaniel where said party drank part of same and at which period James Gorman Swore James Kavanagh of Rathdaniel to be true to Moll Doyle -- James Gorman and party then proceeded to the house of John Fenlon of Tankardstown which they broke open in Search of Arms -- They afterwards went to the house of Laurence Toole of Tankardstown orwise Ballybit and took a Gun therefrom. (signed) James, hisXmark, Coogan. Being first duly read to James Coogan. Sworn before me this 20th day of March 1823. 1. [IRL-WICKLOW] Jacksons in deeds - Co Kildare, with some Wicklow
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. I have added three pages more of transcriptions of JACKSON deeds relating to lands in Co. Kildare to my web site. They are from notes that I took from the names index at the deeds registry when I visited Dublin last fall. Because they are more recent than the other entries, they they tie in with the 1901 census, so that one can then more readily work backwards. If I show no detail alongside the reference, that is because I ran out of time to run them all to ground. SEE: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/TABLES/JACKSON-KildareDeeds.html It should be noted that some of them also mention Co. Carlow as well as Co. Wicklow. ALso, that JACKSON is not the only name included - only that they were at least one of the parties involved in the deed. There are lots of other names on this page. 2. Cara
    3. Excuse me for being pedantic Sharon but Westmeath and Meath are Counties and they stand alone, the province they are within is Leinster. Sorry but that statement once it makes the archives is there forever and if we are going to pass facts on to the public we may as well get it correct in the beginning as have to correct it later. So sorry Cara -----Original Message----- From: irl-wicklow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-wicklow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sharon Oddie Brown Sent: 29 February 2012 06:55 To: IRL-WICKLOW@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] Jacksons in Kildare - connected also to Wicklow I have just posted a piece about a number of JACKSONs who have connections to Co. Kildare on my blog. Included with this work is a ten generation tree, with reliable sources for a number of the names. It starts with a Thomas Jackson who died in 1690 after falling off his horse at the Battle of the Boyne. SEE: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2012/02/inching-towards-kildare.html Both this article, as well as the material that supports, include a lot of new material about JACKSONs in Co. Kildare. Many of them emigrated to New Zealand in the 1800s, and at least one - a Thomas Jackson - was a wealthy merchant in America in the early 1800s. I suspect that these JACKSONs came from the region close to the northern border of England before they set foot in Ireland, at least as early as the late 1600s. From what we know about these families, they also had links to Scotland and Ireland on a fairly regular basis, sometimes living in one place, sometimes in another, depending on economic advantage. The Kildare JACKSONs were connected to many other lines of Jacksons through intermarriage, land and other business connections. They also seem to be connected to a number of neighbouring counties: Dublin, Wicklow, Carlow, Leix (aka Queens Co.), Offally (aka Kings Co.), Leinster (aka Westmeath) and Meath. This does not preclude either land or family attachments in counties that were even further afield, such as Waterford & Kilkenny. For those of you who prefer only the raw data, rather than the story of what I have learned and how I have learned it, I have included hyperlinks at the bottom of the piece so you can cut to the chase. Enjoy - and as always, please give me a heads up if you spot errors or room for improvement. Now, I will get back to transcribing more Jackson-related material. 1. [IRL-WICKLOW] JACKSONs in Wicklow
    2. Sharon Oddie Brown
    3. This is my first post to this list, although I have been on listsof neighbouring counties for some time now. For almost a decade now, I have been researching family history & posting what I know on to my web site. I am learning as I go, but continue to be a rank amateur, and continue to be humbled by my own ignorance. Here is what I recently posted to some other lists: These new posts are part of the work that I have been doing on the JACKSONs of Co. Kildare. They are an elusive lot, and many of them have ties with JACKSONs in Co. Cavan, Kings Co., Carlow, Wicklow - you name it. They also emigrated to American and New Zealand. At present, the following posts represent that all that I know about the ones that came from the north western tip of Co. Kildare: Snippets of JACKSONs of Ballygibbon http://www.thesilverbowl.com/history/JACKSONs-Ballygibbon.html Some Family Trees of the JACKSONs of Ballygibbon http://www.thesilverbowl.com/familytree/JACKSONs-Ballygibbon.html An annotated deed that connects the JACKSONs of Ballygibbon, Co. Kildare to Edenderry, Kings Co. http://www.thesilverbowl.com/documents/1839Mar14-JACKSON-FAWCETT.html As always, I am grateful when errors in my data are pointed out, so I can make corrections. Enjoy - there will be more to come, Sharon Oddie Brown -- Sharon Oddie Brown, Roberts Creek, BC, Canada. History Project: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/

    3. -----Original Message----- There are records dating from the 1890s which detail baptisms and deaths in Carlow Workhouse. The records are part of The Delany Archive recently established and stored at St. Patrick's College Carlow. The archive is open to researchers. The Delaney Archive includes the Diocesan collection of Kildare and Leighlin, Carlow College and Knockbeg College, and contains material covering the period 1726 - 1967 relating to the 56 parishes spread across Carlow, Laois, Kildare, Kilkenny, Offly and Wicklow. The archive also holds the papers of Fr. Peadar Mac Suibhne, the papers of Fr. P.J. Brophy, minutes of meetings of the Carlow Board of Health dating from 1832 and the records of the Brigidines and Patricians religious orders dating from 1807. The Archivist is Bernie Deasy, who is also working on archives stored at Carlow County Library. Further information at : www.delanyarchive.ie

    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM YOUR ADMIN
    2. Cara
    3. I am not aware of what has caused the reason removal of listers from the lists, it is not me suddenly removing you all. It must be a problem at a ISP server and currently it appears to be, UK that is the problem. ALL I can suggest is that should you be un-subbed suddenly without any warning, you simply need to go to the same page you were at when you first subbed and resub yourselves, currently most of you have been placed back on the list because I received notification that you had been removed. Those of you now receiving your mail in the wrong format, which is either Digest or L Mode do need to write to me OFF LIST and tell me to change this setting for you. If you cannot resub yourself and are not receiving mail, then you have found the archived material, then simply click back and use the opening page to re-sub. Do you have a friend on the list you know may have been taken off the list in this last skirmish, feel free to contact them and ask them do they need assistance to rejoin. Yours as baffled still as when she began the repair of this mess this morning. Cara

    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] MODERATED LIST
    2. Cara
    3. Dear Listers, You all have done nothing wrong, but last year a series of email providers addresses were hacked, AOL, COMCAST, just to name a few, but in the latest spate of phishing mail, I have decided to moderate the list for 72 hours. This does not mean your mails won't make the list, they simply will not make them as quickly as they were. Do not open any mail you receive with links in them as they are not from friendly users. So Like many other list admins I have opted for the more user friendly way of trying to stop anymore hacking mails and links etc making the list, and causing others a problem. I am as sorry for this method of sorting the problem, but I cannot think of any other that will ease the problem as quickly. Go on using your list as if nothing has happened BUT even if you were not hacked last year, even if you had your email address sorted out, remember this, a change of password makes life much easier for those of us using emails. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD, AND TIGHTEN YOUR SECURITY. Cheers Cara

    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] Toole, Stewart, and Lyons Baltinglass
    2. Kevin Riley
    3. Luke Lyons married Betty Stewart in Raheen (Baltinglass)in 1836. I believe she is Hester Stewart d/o of John and Elizabeth b. 1808 in Tuckmill. Her baptismal sponsors were John Toole and Winfrid Kelly. Witnesses at her wedding were Patt Toole & Rose Toole, who were also sponsors for her first child, Patrick (1837). This leads me to think her mother's maiden name could be Toole. I don't think Patt and Rose were married. Church Baptism Toole Rose 1815 Wicklow BALTINGLASS (RC) Father: Michael Church Marriage Toole Rosey 1841 Wicklow BALTINGLASS (RC) There is also Elizabeth d/o Michael b.1819 in Baltinglass. Name: Michl Tool County: Carlow and Wicklow Parish: Baltinglass Townland: Tuckmill Upper Year: 1824 So Michael could be a brother. Church Baptism Toole Patrick 1809 Co. Wicklow BALTINGLASS (RC) Church Baptism Toole Patrick 1811 Co. Wicklow BALTINGLASS (RC) Neither has a father named Michael. Does anyone have any information on this Toole family? Thanks and take care, Kevin
