National Library: Move of rare books What is happening? The Clean Sweep project has resulted in most of our rarest books being cleaned and rehoused. The area where they are currently shelved is unsuitable for is a vulnerable, rare printed items and there is now an opportunity to move them to more appropriate shelving close to our Manuscript collections, where they will be housed in a secure and more controlled environment. It will also free up shelving space for new book acquisitions over the next number of years. In order to move the collection, there will be no access to these books from 28 May to 16 July. What books are involved ? Approximately 50,000 books are involved. The collections included are the Joly, LO, Dix, Thom, O'Kelley, Swift and O'Casey (LO) and certain music collections. The call-number prefixes for books affected are: * AM * Dix * J * JM * Joly * LO * LO LB * LO P * LO.SWIFT * MU * OKE * THOM Are alternatives available? Yes. We have duplicate copies of many of these books in other collections, and also provide access to digital resources where many are available. You can see whether you can access another copy by following the steps below: 1. Check the catalogue record for the book itself, to see if it has an icon linking you directly to a free copy of the book online, or a link to take you to one of our electronic resources like <http://www.jstor.org> JSTOR 2. Some of the books being moved have duplicate copies in the Ir collection - check the catalogue to see if there is another copy 3. Check the date of the book. If it is 18th century, see if there's a digital copy in ECCO ( <file:///\\Eighteenth%20Century%20Collections%20Online> Eighteenth Century Collections Online) 4. Check the date of the book. If it is earlier than 18th century, see if there's a digital copy in EEBO ( <file:///\\Early%20English%20Books%20Online> Early English Books Online) 5. Check the free online full-text resources (like <http://books.google.com/> Google Books, and the <http://archive.org/details/texts> Internet Archive) to see if the book is digitally available there, but not linked to from our catalogue yet Note that EEBO, ECCO and JSTOR are subscription resources and are only available when you are in the National Library. What will happen after the move? After the move, these books will be consulted in the Manuscripts Reading Room. More details on how this will work will be available before the end of May. I am researching on behalf of my mother in law's family. Her Grandmother was Alice Moulton born in Borris, Co Carlow, daughter of Rachel Atkinson and Robert Moulton. Rachel's father was Abraham Atkinson ( a weaver) and Robert's father was Matthew Moulton (a labourer). There is a member here named Anne, I see you are related to William Atkinson who married Sara Jane Butcher - William was Rachel's brother. Any knowledge of this family would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Arnold Sent: 04 April 2012 22:13 To: irl-wicklow@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] FAGAN New to the list. Researching FAGAN (Fagin?) family whose son Matthew FAGAN was b. 1820, Dublin, son of Owen FAGAN and Mary O'BRIEN. Family members travelling to Ireland have indicated there are many FAGANS in Wicklow today. Family moved to Liverpool before 1828 as daughter was born there in that year. (1841 Census). (Subsequent children born, baptized in a Catholic Church, Liverpool). Matthew FAGAN was a painter. Owen FAGAN (b. ~ 1790) was said to have been a Hedgerow Teacher. (And, of course, his father might also have been one ....) 1. Are there Catholic Church records available in the 1760-1830 time period for the Wicklow area? 2. Are there lists/stories of Hedgerow Teachers in this area in this time period? 3. Are there directories in this time period available that might list Owen FAGAN? Thank you.
