    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] William Headon/Headen Rathvilly Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin

    3. I have found on rootsireland a Wm Headan baptised, August, 1812, Address, Ballyoliver, Parish/District, Rathvilly, County, Wicklow (not Kildare), Denomination, RC. ------------------------------ I am almost sure that this would be your man, what you have missed is that although people write Rathvilly Co Wicklow it is in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin so therefore it is not unusual to find them saying Co Wicklow instead of the Diocese of Kildare. I would look further at this man but in saying that you need to locate the Rathvilly Ballyoliver Rathvilly is indeed covered by Carlow records. Now I cannot help you as early as 1812 I can only begin in 1829 http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/Baptism_Rathvilly_01.htm My research covering the line of Toole 26 Date:- 12/3/1829 Child:- Ann Father:- Patt Byrne Mother:- Sally Headon Sponsor 1:- John Byrne Sponsor 2:- Hanna Headon Residence:- Coole 34 Date:- 25/3/1829 Child:- Edward Father:- John Headon Mother:- Mary Dooling Sponsor 1:- Michael & Sponsor 2:- Margaret Dooling Residence:- Rathdaniel 49 Date:- 14/4/1829 Child:- Mary Father:- John Headon Mother:- Mary Toole Sponsor 1:- Patt Nolan Sponsor 2:- Mary Laurenson Residence:- Rathdaniel 89 Date:- 28/6/1829 Child:- Mary Father:- John Middleton Mother:- Biddy Dunn Sponsor 1:- John Headon Sponsor 2:- Cath Nolan Residence:- Rath Daniel 105 Date:- 25/6/1829 Child:- James Father:- Gart. 3. Dear Cara, Thank you so much for this information! My knowledge of the geography and parishes of Ireland is very limited. Your description of the blurred lines between the parishes made me laugh. When you ask were there others to be found in England, what do you mean? From what I've seen of the army papers, they seem to have recruited many from Ireland in the 50th Foot Regiment. Don't know why and will have to investigate. I have found on rootsireland a Wm Headan baptised, August, 1812, Address, Ballyoliver, Parish/District, Rathvilly, County, Wicklow (not Kildare), Denomination, RC. I'm that one step closer, so thank you for the the information about the border towns. I realise it may not be him, but at least I'm now aware of the problems with border towns and civil/religious parishes. You have given me many leads, and I'll pursue them. I really enjoy the way we all share information with the research we have done, so thank you once again. I hope you find that missing man. All power to you for pursuing him. 3. 50th Foot Queen's Own West Kent Regiment in 1833/34 It would appear you have his army papers Lesley were there any others to be found in England? And although you have received a clue that Julia was RC, you have not really proven what religion William was have you ? although most probably RC. Now you do need to move your search for his birth to Kildare, as he stated born Kildare, could mean he was on the Kildare Wicklow Border, so perhaps a map and a good look along the border between Wicklow and Kildare may suggest a townland you see These places show in both counties Blessington, which is one of the biggests townland in West Wicklow is covered by Kildare but in the Diocese of Dublin, in fact when it comes to researching Kildare and Wicklow, Kildare becomes a rather muddled affair of Dioceses, also Baltinglass is somewhat covered by this County as well, but what does spring to mind is there is in Kildare. Kildare and Leighlin Diocese takes in these places Baltinglass Clonmore Clonegal Hacketstown Rathvilly And then I have to say you will then need to broaden your search into the Carlow area also as this is the Leighlin part of things, yes it is not easy, when the come from border towns, I know first hand this is not going to be an easy search, as this is the are of my own research now, and its been a hard 25 years to get even a glimmer of the missing man and his family for myself, but do not let those words put you off, for in fact when I began my own research in Wicklow I was told they never left home, they were born and died where they were, well now that is the biggest lot of myths I ever did hear, but of course that remains to be another story. Further to his birth and death notices It would appear he would have been born in one of the county line places where in one room you can breakfast in Carlow, move to another room and have lunch in Wicklow and then return to work in Kildare all within a step of each other. Sorry to muddy the waters Cara -----Original Message----- From: irl-wicklow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-wicklow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of lclark Sent: 10 June 2012 20:09 To: irl-wicklow@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] Headon - Darcy, Wicklow Hi Cara and Janet, I'd sent a message at the end of May, and wondered if you and the other listers had received it. I enjoy reading about the queries. Helps build in the bits about the history of Ireland. Regards, Lesley Dear All, This is a really difficult one. Wm Headon joined the 50th Foot Queen's Own West Kent Regiment in 1833/34 and sailed to NSW in 1834 with his wife, Julia Darcy and child, Bridget Headon b about 1834, Chatham, Kent. His army records say he was from Baltinglass, Wicklow. The deal was that you signed up for seven years, could take your family with you, and then make your own way in the new country. Julia died at 39 years in 1853 in Bendigo, Victoria (gold mining), and unfortunately the records of that time record nothing else. Wm married again, and with the birth of a child of his second family, he says he was born in Athy, Kildare, then his death certificate says he was born in Wicklow. I was at Glendalough, Wicklow, Ireland, two years ago and saw so many monuments to the Darcy family. I can't find a thing about Julia Darcy in any of the Irish records. I have found a reference to a number of births of a Wm Headon in Wicklow, !810-14 on "RootsIreland".. Headon can be translated as Heydon, Hayden etc. When I was in Ireland two years ago, I knew very little, not even if they were Catholic or Protestant. They were Catholic. According to the National Library of Australia's collection of newspapers (Trove), a Sydney paper records Julia Headon about 1836, donating 2/6 to the building of St Mary's Cathedral. When Wm had left the army in 1841, and had become a shepherd on the Snowy River, both their sons were baptised by Father Michael Kavanagh in 1847 and 1849, such an isolated place. Their four daughters, who were born before, baptised in Sydney, must have been with them. I would welcome any advice about this family and how to find a connection with Ireland. I'm not sure if it is possible. Any thoughts would be very much welcomed! 3. Thanks to all of you for the welcomes. Along the lines of general housekeeping, may I ask all of you to please, if you have not changed your own email password in [OMG!] months, to do that now to protect yourself and your fellow subbers from the spam hackers. It is so simple to do and gives so much protection. So does closing an e-mail account you are not going to use anymore - clean the addresses out of it and request the company shut it down before you totally leave it. I keep a sheet of paper with my email password written on it next to my pc. When I change my password, I line through that old one and write in the new one. It is always handy right there. I get cranky when someone lets their account spam the list and it is not a pretty sight. Wm Headon joined the 50th Foot Queen's Own West Kent Regiment in 1833/34 and sailed to NSW in 1834 with his wife, Julia Darcy and child, Bridget Headon b about 1834, Chatham, Kent.
