    3. Dear Kate, Thank you for this information on the house and building censuses for the Ellis estate at Magherymore for 1901 and 1911. You are right, Thomas and Sarah would have been living in the area much earlier than these dates and Sarah would have become Sarah Cullen by then also. In any case, it's good information for the list and who knows, they might have had other children I'm not aware of who worked on the estate and might have showed up on the census. I'm thinking that while Thomas might have worked on the estate at one time, he might have lived offsite. You mentioned having some scanned photos circa 1954. I would love to see what it looked like then if you don't mind sending them to me offlist. Thank you for your interest, Kate. With yours and Cara's help and advice, I have a few ideas on how to revive my Irish research. Bye for now, Sheila J. <snip> I'm not sure that I can be much help from the dates you've estimated. The copies I've just received, via my husband's aunt, are for the 1901 and 1911 census. I also have a copy of the details put together for the sale of the estate in 1954 which include some photos and lists of all the different buildings etc. Let me know if you'd like scans of any of this. 3. Hello peoples ... I am doing a couple of very large military projects in W Aust one being all defence personnel buried in Fremantle Cemetery. I have a Richard James SHIEL born c1888, Pierce Joseph SHIEL born c1884 buried there although Pierce died at Coolgardie which is quite some distance from Fremantle. I also have a WW1 service record for a James Phillip SHIEL born Wicklow Ireland his wife was Grace Elizabeth. James enlisted in Kalgoorlie which is the other side of Coolgardie ... both are mining towns. These three men are not necessarily related although it is a possibility. Firstly the surname is not a well known one for WA and secondly the three ages are in close proximity to one another. I was wanting to know if people were researching these families at all. 3. Hi Sheila I'm not sure that I can be much help from the dates you've estimated. The copies I've just received, via my husband's aunt, are for the 1901 and 1911 census. I only have the 'House and Building Return' for the 1901, which lists the head of house for each of 11 dwellings on the estate. For the 1911 census I have the details of those living in the main house and the 'House and Building Return'. I'll list the names just in case they are any use to you or anyone else on the list but sadly no Plunketts. 1901 census - Daniel McElroy, James Phillips, Dominic McGuirk, Edward Killbride, Laurence Davey, Thomas McGuade, Abraham Martin, Thomas Brady, James Warren, Richard Hynes and William Goulding. All are shown as tennants of Colnl. H. L.Ellis Esq. JP. I think that Daniel McElroy may have been leasing the main house at this time from the numbers on the return. 1911 census - John Webster, Colonel L Ellis, Joseph B Alcock, Richard White, William Bell, Christopher ?wambly?, John Joseph Greaves, Thomas Kavanagh, James Wiseman, William Seabrook all shown as tennants of Colonel L Ellis. Then living in the main house were: Henry Leslie-Ellis - Head, Margaret Leslie-Ellis - Wife, Francis Rolleston Leslie-Ellis - Son, Joan Leslie-Ellis - Daughter, John Lancelot Leslie-Ellis - Son, Charles Stanhope Leslie-Ellis - Son, Herbert ?Reginald? Bree - Boy's Tutor, Edith Sarah Eldred - Children's Governess, Henry William Wilkins - Butler, John Hicks - Coachman, Thomas Mc?uade - Footman, Emily Eliza Head - Nurse, Edith Annie Milligan - Lady's Maid, Janet J???is Beadie - Sewing Maid, Eliza Venn - Housemaid. It is quite difficult to read because I think the copy was reduced in size. There are ages and places of birth etc so if any are of interest let me know. I also have a copy of the details put together for the sale of the estate in 1954 which include some photos and lists of all the different buildings etc. Let me know if you'd like scans of any of this. The dates that you are looking for would have been long before Henry Leslie-Ellis inherited the estate in 1899 on the death of his father Robert Francis Ellis. I'm not sure of the date that Robert settled at SeaPark/Magherymore. He was a JP for Wicklow in1868, so it may be that your Thomas and Sarah lived there prior to Robert settling there. I'm sorry not to have been more help. I'll keep looking if I get any more information. Best wishes Kate

    3. Dear Listers, After receiving three complaints I am now coming to the list to say, that their has been, doubt cast over a person or persons using more than one name on the list, all of the persons who have pointed this out to me, have said they feel that it is a violation of trust, and that those using another name for the purpose of remaining anonymous, has brought them to the point that they do not feel that they wish to share any details of families etc. So when it begins to affect the list, I must adress the problem, so have done this by just leaving it as an open letter to the list. I am pointing no fingers, casting no stones, but if you are indeed using another name to hide your identity, I must assure you, that the cover has been blown. I will leave up to the person or persons to just sort themselves out, but now you know the feelings of the people on the list, perhaps what began as a way to remain anonymous, has now been blown, and is bothering several of the listers. No mail will be entered into, and no discussion is needed on the subject. CARA List Admininstrator

    3. Hello Terri, I have a Susan Jackson who married Benjamin Driver in Carlow in 1862. I know they emigrated to America probably via Canada, where there were plenty of Jacksons already. I found this couple on the 1900 USA Census in Irondequoit, Monroe, New York They had 11 children and if you look at the Ellis Island website, you will find them travelleling backwards and forwards between Ireland and New York. Sometimes they travelled with "Sofrins", who were their first cousins. Nice if we could make a connection. Kind regards Inga Jackson Wellington New Zealand. Muckduff Upper is precisely 483 acres, so apparently the entire townland was rented. But I have my doubts about the "stone house", even in disrepair, actually being on the property/townland. I suspect it was probably one of the three buildings at or near the end of the only road close to Muckduff Upper - it passes through Muckduff Lower but stops before it reaches the Upper townland. And Upper it is !! Muckduff Upper is a boxy, squarish townland on the eastern slope of Carrig Mountain, extending all the way to the peak. There are no buildings at all shown on the Discovery map 62, based on aerial photograph from 1973. These maps are especially good at showing very rural buildings - even derelict ones. There is a path shown from the end of the road/lane in M. Lower, heading up the mountain a bit and then eastward to two of three "huts" (perhaps for booleying) in Bernagh townland. This path may enter M. Upper townland, but all of the buildings are outside of it. The only real mapable sites are two cairn locations (one may be a passage grave) located directly on the boundary line between Muckduff Upper and the townland of Carrig Mountain. Muckduff means "black pig", but this area seems much more adaptable to sheep <gr>. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

I am the family member who has been researching the family history, so she did not have much knowledge of the family tree other than a few details - enough to pique her interest. she was able to locate a George Alcock on the Tithe Allotments. apparently in 1860 George Alcock, along with John Wilson, Thomas Hopson, George and William Driver and William Moody leased 483 acres in Upper Muckduff from William Hume. as I understand the info she gave me by phone Upper Muckduff is in the Barony of Upper Talbotstown, Parish of Kiltegan, Union of Baltinglass and Electoral Division of Humewood. she also found Alcocks, Hawkins, and Moodys buried in St Peter's Church Cemetery, Kiltegan. All of these names are associated with my Alcocks. is there anyone out there who knows anything about any of the names mentioned in this area? my sister visited the property and was allowed to go and have a look at the Alcock home on the property - the last Alcock having died a couple of years ago - a Mary Ann Alcock - it is a stone house in disrepair. I would be very interested in anything anyone can tell me about the Wicklow hills, Upper Muckduff and area. thanks, Terri Alcock Sooke, BC Canada

    1. Re: CULLEN / PLUNKET(T)
    2. Sheila Johnston
    3. Hi Kate, Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I don't have dates for Sarah and her father, Thomas Plunket, however, I know that Sarah's husband, John H. Cullen, was born in 1846, so I can only "guesstimate" that she would be born about the same time, if not a few years later, abt 1850 or so. Their marriage record (1873) didn't give their ages. Therefore, Thomas might then have been born possibly between 1820-1825, depending on whether Sarah was one of several children. I previously mentioned that Thomas was listed as a "herder" on the marriage record, but I stand corrected, it should be "herd". I have no idea who Sarah's mother was and have no dates of death for any of these people. By the 1901 census Sarah should be living with husband John H. and their daughter (my grandmother) Sarah Jane Cullen. Their older daughter, Elizabeth was married by 1901 and living with her husband, Samuel Farrar. Sarah and John's son, John Thomas, was killed in South Africa in 1900 but I have reason to ! believe that at least one of the parents, John or Sarah, was alive at that time as there was a memorial card to him, addressing him as "my son". I have checked the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Rathdrum and Dunganstown, with no luck for the Cullens, and only one family with the surname Plunkett, father Thomas, with daughter Sarah Jane (1). The ages were not right for my Thomas, but I wondered if he might not be a brother to Sarah Plunket(t), though this is just conjecture because I don't know if Sarah had siblings or not. I wasn't sure where to check next on the census as the family could be anywhere I suppose. If your cousin found something that would be amazing. Best regards, Sheila <snip>One of my husband's cousins is workng for a shortwhile in Ireland and has taken the chance to do some research. I know that he has a copy of the 1901 census entries. Do you have some dates for Sarah and Thomas? Best wishes Kate __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 3. June 8th 1885 Dora Plunkett Baptised Illegitimate of Seapark-source Dunganstown parish register ================================= I trust you will all work out my shorthand I have given surnames followed by Abode and fathers profession where a *** apears it simply means that I am following the spelling in the parish regsiter, should you see a surname more than once it simply means I have more than one child to that man due to time I did not continue to format it completely so read with care. I can take the baptisms from 1842 to 2001 but have not included those later names as some contain addresses that are current so if you wish to know more on a name, get your fingers typing, I dont only have this transcribed I hold copy. plus marriages .......... cheers CARA SURNAME/Abode/FATHERS PROFESSION TOMLINSON/Schoolmaster LEYBURN/Farmer CHAPMAN/Farmer BRENNAN/Farmer HATTON/Farmer
