Cara, Interesting to see that you listed Tuttys and Moorehouses in your research. I have a Frances Eager, b. 27th June 1842, who married a Mr Moorhouse. Their son, Tom Moorhouse was born about 1887 and died 26th February 1933, age 46. He married Mary Tutty. She was the daughter of Anne (Tutty) and Richard Tutty, and was lived between 1881 and 1960. My many times great aunt, Mary Jane Eager, provided further information, which is all a bit of a muddle as I haven't identified all the links - it is a bit like a logic question. She says : 1. Tom Moorhouse is third cousins with Gretta Dowling's Aunt Nan. Gretta's maiden name was Eager, she was born in 1925, and her parents were Germain Eager and Mary Ann Ovington. I don't know of this Aunt Nan - whether she was an Ovington by birth or married an Ovington. 2. Aunt Nan's grandmother's surname was Hobson. 3. Grandmother Hobson's parents were Anne Eager of Ballinafoyle and Henry Lawrence of Slieveroe Moyne. Anne Eager was born around 1812, and her parents were William Eager and Katherine Finlay. Myself and Mary Jane Eager are descended from William's son Germaine Eager, b. 1813. So I guess that we are looking for a Female Lawrence marrying a Male Hobson! Who is Aunt Nan?! PS. Thanks for that Hanbidge message, I'll add Annie to my ever increasing list!
Does anyone know the Irish naming pattern ? (eg. first son named after fater's father) I think this could be helpful in tracing family back. Kathleen Crain

Well I havent heard about it tell me all............. Hi Cara, I would love to be able to share a tree full of information about my CHATHAMS, but unfortunately what I have learned about them is mostly from this list. I have Joseph CHATHAM b. abt. 1839 in County Wicklow m. Bridget BURNS b. ?, Ireland. ( possibly a second wife?) Joseph's Mother was Catherine, maiden name unknown b. 1803 in County Wexford. I have no info on Joseph's father. I'm not even sure if Joseph and Bridget married in Ireland or US. I know they were in US before 1871 when a daughter Mary was born in Michigan. Another daughter Catherine was born in 1878 in Nevada and twin boys James and John were born in 1880 in California. The twins died at three and six months. In later census, Bridget was listed as having had eight children, three of which were still alive. I can account for four children, two were living. "A Jimmy Chatham of "Butte, Montana - Died 7 Churches In Ireland". This is taken from the Family Record Of Marriage and Birth. It also lists a cousin, Margette Chatham of Butte, Montana, a retired school teacher." Is Jimmy possibly a brother to Joseph??? Joseph was a miner in all records I find for him in the US so assume that was his occupation in Ireland also. Wish I had more to share ... Regards, Gail Vacaville, CA

Hello fellow subscribers: Firstly, I'm temporarily unsubscribing while we move across town - about two miles. Certainly not looking forward to the adventure of moving boxes, boxes and more boxes but very appreciative that I have treasured possessions after seeing what happened to my fellow Americans in the Deep South after battling Hurricane Katrina. Secondly, I've been a subscriber of this mailing list for at least several years and most of my time has been one of sitting quietly in the background reading and learning from all the postings. Various comments have been made throughout the years about us quiet people and why we haven't taken a more vocal stance in this mailing list. I personally have learned a great deal from all these postings and am grateful to our hostess Cara who makes this list both so educational and entertaining. Looking forward to re-subscribing once we've unpacked and the computer is back up and purring again. I have just got back from a trip to Ireland and spent a lot of time digging in the Crossbridge areas for my CLARE line. A relative of my husbands gave me a book called "Reminiscences of Crossbridge, Co. Wicklow". It covers the surrounding areas too which breaks down into each parish with lots of names, people information going back a long way and details of some of the baptism records of each church. If anyone is searching in that area, please let me know and I will do a lookup. Marion Victoria, BC Canada
Does anyone know where Ballydowns is in Co. Wicklow. please? I have a possible link to my CLARE line. I found a record for Mr. CLARE who married Margaret CUSACK abt 1808 in Ballydowns, Co. Wicklow. My CLARES came from the Crossbridge/Tinahely and Glendalough areas and I know that the CUSACKS were there too. Many thanks Marion

I think the list has gone to sleep! Here are two men from Wicklow that I found in England when I was looking for Reid ancesters from Donegal. Do they belong to anybody? 1901 England & Wales census James Reid, age 49, b. Wicklow, recorded in the Civil parish of Blackburn Thomas Reid, age 40, b. Wicklow, recorded in Whitehaven, Cumberland, working as a Coal Hewer. Hope this helps, Susan Redearching:- Reid, Marshall - Donegal McCloskey, Hamilton, Cowan, Doak - Londonderry Dougherty, Armstrong - Fermanagh Eager, Finlay, Hanbidge, Collins - Wicklow McClure, Craig, Lennox - Antrim
Still searching for any info on the above. Is the page assleep? Have had nothing from Wicklow list for a week or so though have had from other lists. David.
Hello All. I have hit a dead end and am hoping someone might be able to assist. I have a lot of data on the Irish family from Canada but little back in Ireland. My Great Aunt, Bessie (Beatty) Skuce started the family history and left her original book with me. She went to Ireland many times to visit family and she has pictures of Wicklow but little of who those people were. John Beatty born about 1770 - stayed in Ireland Daniel Beatty born about 1778 - went to Canada 1818 - married to Jane Smith I have a copy of a letter from John Beatty, Shelton, Ireland on the 24th April 1844 to Michael Beatty, Bytown, North America: Of Daniel's neighbour, Thomas Allen, he and his wife and family live in Calliece near Rathdrum and have upwards of 50 acres. Pieces family are all well, 3 live in Rathdrum, second eldest Thomas keeps a shop, George and Michael are blacksmiths. Mick is not married but works with his brother George, the eldest son. John is married to a daughter of Nick Bowlands and lives in Mungawn. Henry is married lately to a daughter of Dan Halls and is inclined fro America. Thomas Smith lives in Thomastown (perhaps this is a relative to Jane) His eldest daughter is Admiral Proby's dairy maid in Poulahone. The second eldest married to a carpenter, a son of Owen Ryans (Owen is dead) His eldest son is married and lives on a farm near Arklow. One son and daughter live with him, the youngest son is a clerk to Mr. Gregory of Arklow. Joel or Joal Hale and 1 of his sisters lives in Kilearra. One sister is a cook with Admiral Proby but married the butler. Denis Cavanagh is well. One son is a smyth and lives with Pierce in Rathdrum, his eldest son Mat lives in Mungawn. Jack Bryan and Old Paul Ruffsee alive and well. Thom Pierce died as did his young Tom. Jack Death is in the poor house in Rathdrum. Nanny Death still living. John had 3 sons & 3 daughters. The eldest John married an Arklow girl and has a school near Newry. The next son is a gardener and the youngest, Alar is in the police. The eldest daughter lives near Dublin, twice married. The second is married to a slater named Carty and lives in Arklow. The youngest has a school from Miss Proby. I am hoping that something can narrow this to an area where I could check graveyards and church records. John was Anglican as was Daniel. Jane I am not sure of. Any help or insight very much appreciated. Sorry so long first time, just excited for another potential connection. And this is only the Wicklow connection. Charlene

HI Cara Patrick Cullen, son of Peter Cullen and Anne Brien married Elizabeth Rourke, daughter of John Rourke and Elizabeth Doyle in S.S. Mary and Peter's R.C. Church 26 November 1864. They were Catholic. They had 5 children Baptized in the above Church: Ann - 1865 - 15 November Elizabeth - 1867 - 22 October (a bit different from your Dec. 14th record) Peter - 1870 - 8 November (a bit different from your Nov. 15th record) Mary - 1873 - 9 March There may have been one more - John - 1876 - 20 May. I have the mother as Elizabeth Rowan, but it could have been a mis-read while transcribing the film. No Catherine or Bridget. Peggy
Whoops, slightly critical typo! Thanks Peter
Two useful websites which I have come across recently are: www.irishgeneology.ie which is currently is in the process of adding more records. The database covers the north west counties and Wexford. So maybe not that useful of Wicklow research, but a vg site anyway. The other one is http://infowanted.bc.edu which lists people who have emigrated to America, and the families have lost touch and placed ads in the american press to try and make contact again. There are about 200 people listed from Wicklow - including the name Kehoe (I seem to remember that there is someone searching for this name on the list. Suz
Cara at cracker@hotkey.net.au writes: << I have to say I have no idea where Mounthoward is have to leave that to the map experts >> Cara, There are a pair of Mounthoward townlands, Upper and Lower, in Co. Wexford, in Monamolin civil parish, just north of the village of Monamolin. These Mounthowards are about 6 miles eastish of Ferns town. I don't see any Mounthowards in Co. Wicklow. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts
Well said Cara! These are my Wicklow 'brick walls' and any help would be most appreciated. I would really like to find out the parents and siblings of the people listed below. William EAGER, Kilcarney m. 1803 Katherine FINLAY, Ballinabarney (daughter of Thomas) Church of Ireland, I think! Who were William's parents, when were William and Katherine born. Katherine's family liked to use the name German/ Germain/ Germaine as a christian name for boys. Julia HANBIDGE, b. Abt 1800 - 05 Merginstown m. 1827 Thomas COLLINS, Coolamadra. Julia is the daughter of John Hanbidge. Who was her mother. Who was John Hanbidge's father. Thomas was the son of John Collins of Coolamadra. Margaret WEYBOURNE, Rathdrum m. Abt 1810 James LAWRENCE, Slieveroe, Moyne Where are the Weybourne family? As far as I know Margaret was the daughter of a wealthy family who lived in Knockree/ Knockray House near Rathdrum, but I can't find any trace of them. Other Wicklow names connected with the family are Dougherty, Hinch, Ovington, and Molyneux. Many thanks Susan
