And shall remain open for business, whenver you like, its your list knock on the door, nag a little even and keep on looking and posting your interests. I for one was not aware the list was closed for business, it doesnt need me to keep it bouncing along, you are all capable of typing up a message and posting it down the list, but now at this time of the year is not the time to be pointing all this out, but to be making others aware that as newbies join the list, and ask their first hesitant question, as beginners that you all, remember your first forage into Irish research, and be kind, and helpful, to all the new people joining the list, there has been a few, and as they have not posted their queries, we cannot help them yet, but as they realise the list is friendly ( most times anyway) they themselves will list their questions and we as a team will endeavour to help them. I must yet again comment on this subject that is a bee in my bonnet yes,,,,,,,,,,,,,on another list the comment has been made that a "one sided research is a daunting thing" whereby one person asks about something and the rest of the listes wait in anticipation to see the outcome, only to never know if that piece of the jigsaw matches up with their family. I do know its happening on this list on a regular basis, and I do know those who are doing this, because in the end I receive a mail that says *Help me please* is anyone else researching this as I have received this from ?...... and although it is helpful I cannot link it any further, moral of the story is If you dont post down the list who knows what you are seeking............. I fully take a smack for having also done this at times, and apologise to those who have missed out of pertinent reseach material, but in the event I stray again from this path, could I be sentenced to deportation to my beloved Co Wicklow Ireland for at least 6 months Stay tuned for the next important message on the CO Wicklow List. By the way Cyril is not subbed to the list at the moment, he is still coping with an illness he has not gotten on top of. Peggy has gone to Arklow to recuperate after her recent loss of her mother and we wish her well in her search for peace in Arklow for Christmas. A regular lurking lister VIv decided she needed to give her head a bit of a trim and took a turn resulting in stitches to her forehead, nothing ruined her brain is still functioning and I also wish her a speedy recovery and hope she is in the pink and back researching the Davis and Synott families in Wicklow and Wexford very soon. I wish all of you, who have not been in the pink, I have heard of broken fingers, wrists, sore legs etc etc this year and hope all of those have mended and you are now busily typing up input for the list I Hope Paul has managed to finish his book and will soon be telling us all about that as well So watch this space as the Wicklow list dances into Christmas with a flourish and sees the New year in with a bit of Wicklow cheer. More to come CARA

Hello Susan, Noted your remarks re Wicklow Mailing List. I also had a look at the -----Original Message----- From: Susan Marshall [mailto:susan_e_marshall@hotmail.com] Sent: Friday, December 09, 2005 7:24 PM To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [Wicklow] re mailing list and look forward to the return of entries on same. My mother's mother, Catherine Keogh from County Wicklow married John Shannon, Cty. Cavan in Sydney at St.Benedicts RC Broadway, Sydney in 1867. I found that Catherine Keogh came to Aust. in 1862 with her brother John Keogh, on ship "Northumberland" in 1861 and also found on Shipping List that her brother Patrick came out in l861 on "British Trident". The Deposit Journals show that the deposit for both Catherine and John were paid by their brother. Patrick Keogh. I have not been able to find where John Shannon arrived in Sydney but as I have a copy of their marriage certificate, he did come to Aust. They all settled in Glebe and on many documents John Shannon was a Cab.Proprietor although I have never found any documents to verify this although he did have stables in Franklyn Lane, Glebe as I found in a directory which I looked through at the library. My mother was the last of 8 children born to John and Catherine and was a twin born 1881 in Glebe, her twin sister Maria shown on the registers to have died and I think this must have been either at birth or shortly afterwards. All of the children were born in Glebe St. Glebe as were my parents and their 10 children also born Glebe. My father's name was Augustus George Veness. Thank you again and wishing you the blessings of the Christmas Season. Shirley Parker. (Australia) The list does seem a bit slow at the moment - maybe after christmas when families have been together someone will have or want some new information, and everything will all start up again! Hello Cara, It was lovely to see your email today. I was beginning to wonder whether there was still a Wicklow Mailing List because it is a very long time since I have seen a posting for Wicklow. Thanks very much for all the information on Wicklow in your email and the opening Stanza was just so lovely. This lead up to Christmas is indeed a very busy time and there seems to be so much to do that I somehow feel as though I meet myself coming around the other way. Of course, it is not so busy really as in days gone by but I am not going to admit either that it might have something to do with my age and aches and pains. Being the last left of my siblings (and there were ten of them but I lost my last sister in October), I have been feverishly trying to get my genealogy up to date as it must be my turn next. Peace and best wishes, Shirley P. (Engadine)
"O Wicklow of Silver waters, Wicklow mountains tall, In all the world I have journeyed around There is nowhere like you at all," The gravitational pull of the moon is weakest at the equator and strongest for Wicklow men and woman, world wide round Glendalough, Avoca and Glen of the Downs. Baltinglass won the ALl-Ireland Club Champioship in 1990 Rathnew were Leinsters Champions in 2001 Ronnie Delaney from Hillview, Ferrybank Arklow won the Gold Medal 1500 metres in Melbourne in December 1956 De Valera spent his honeymoon in the Woodenbridge Hotel Mrs Byrne Mother of Billy weighed gold nuggets from the Goldmine valley in Callaghans Chemist Shop in the early thirties. Frank O'Connor the famous Cork short story writer, lived at Lynduff House Woodenbridge in the early fifties. The Avoca River wends along the boundaries of the Woodenbridge Golf Club and it is also bounded by the Ballyarthur woods. Billy Byrne resided in a house called Hazeldene Ferrybank it had been the former home of Captain Kearon ( Pintail Kearon) before his time, Captain Kearon having lost his life on the schooner Julia in February 1931. It is said his ghost is friendly and can still be heard walking across the gravel patch. Mellows Avenue Houses were built around 1933-34 and John Kenny from Ballyanttin, Bill Lee Parnell Terrace, Jim McDonald, and JAmes Russell Mellows Avenue worked on the building site. A garden party was held at Glenart in 1897 In 1989 a Pet Cemetery was opened at Glencree Rd Co Wicklow Powerscourt Garden also had a graveyard for their dogs and each had a plaque put upon them. Arklow was divided into two parts the Upper town and the Fishery. And some of the local superstion's were 1- Don't Put your bed under a window or facing a door 2- After Childbirth a woman was not supposed to put her hands in dough to make bread until she was Churched 3- On All Souls Night they swept the hearth, built up the fire and left a glass of water on the table, and no water was thrown out for return of the souls. Down at the fishery the houses had half doors to keep the children in and most of the houses you stepped down into them. There were no babies cots then, the child was kept in the heat of the mothers body in a short woolen shawl tied at the back for at least 6 months. Most of the women were called by their maiden name or a nick name. It is said the Doctor called and when he asked for the lady by her Mrs ?? name, the woman didnt know of her, and it came about she had resided beside her all her married life, but had only known her by her nick name. The girls and boys courting was done sitting in a window sill, under the watchfull eye of mother, then the boy went to see to get the price of her it is said, when he returned with enough money he paid for the wedding and they were wed, generally spending a day off at the Seven Churches, the groom eventually going off to sea and leaving the bride in her parents home until such times he could afford one their own. The big yard where the Pottery used to be ( gone now like a lot of other things in Arklow) was where they trained the Navy Reserves. There was a bachelor who lived at Tinahask down at the Fishery, walked one girl for 15 years untils she died, and another for 10 years and when the Priest asked him why he didnt marry, he said, "women were troublesome things to have on the floor". You could go to the Matinee at McGowans for a Penny every Saturday. Herrings were the life blood of the fishery, and they sold for 5s. a cran four baskets to a cran. Cheers Cara
Hi Dave & Tess: I am looking for any information on a Catherine Carty that married Pierie Sinnott 15 july 1791 at Arklow in Wicklow Ireland. Pierie was christened 24 Nov. 1763 and died in 1858 he was the son of James Sinnott and Ann Connor, who were married 17 Jan. 1762 in Arklow,Wicklow. James Sinnott was born abt. 1737 in Castletown,Wexford and is buried in Kilkevan, near Castletown. Ann Connor was born abt. 1741 in Ross. Wexford. ---------------------------------- Catherine was (b) abt. 1769 in Castletown, Wexford. Catherine and Pierie had (3) three children all born in Castletown, Wexford; James abt. 1793; Thomas abt 1796; and Ann abt. 1799. If all the above is correct as presented from FamilySearch/ IGI for Ireland, then Thomas Sinnett born in Castletown,Wexford would be the original immigrant to New Brunswick,Ca., and my 2nd. Great Grandfather. I would appreciate any and all help to confirm the above facts, i.e. census, church records, url's for maps of the counties, etc. Edd Sinnett in Florida........ ----- Original Message ----- From: "dave & tess" <davtes@bigpond.net.au> To: <IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 09, 2005 3:15 AM Subject: [Wicklow] re mailing list Cara, I too share Shirley's consern that our Wicklow page had closed down.
