Hello Pete, I've been reading your geography items for several years on quite a few Irish lists. I live in the town of Clarence in Erie County which borders Lancaster. Don't hesitate to contact me for Buffalo area lookups. As a member of the Western New York Genealogical Society I go to the Buffalo and Erie County library once a month as a genealogy volunteer to assist newsiest and folks from out of town with local genealogical research questions. In addition to the federal censuses, NY State conducted censuses in Western NY in 1855, 1865 (very helpful for Civil War vets), 1875, 1892 (a good substitute for the lost 1890 federal census), 1905,1915, and 1925. The NY censuses have not been indexed. The Belo library has them all as well as extensive local cemetery and church records. Regards, Tom O'Hare, in glorious flat-as-a- pancake Clarence, New York. Griffiths valuation you say Nancy so one must assume you are looking for a man about 1854-1864 living do you have any idea of when he was born? If he lived at the Fishery it was highly possible he was a fisherman so could I ask why he would be listed in Griffiths which was a valuation for land taxes Did he own land then? We all on this list are willing to help but it would be lovely if you added more details, religion, age in fact anything at all...............Patrick Brennan wont be an uncommon name in Ireland. But we need your time frame to push this one further Cara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Tweedie" <1tootsie@charter.net> To: <IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 25, 2005 10:41 AM Subject: [Wicklow] Patrick Brennan >I am looking for info On Patrick Brennan/Brennen who appears on the Index >to Griffith's Valuation. Cara, I am grasping at straws. I have a Michael Brennan/Brennen born about 1832 in Cty Wicklow to Patrick Brennan/Brennen. Actually, I found 4 Patricks on the Griffith's Valuation: #1 Patrick, Parish: Arklow, Location: T/Arkow The Fishery #2 Patrick: Parish Boystown, Location: Ballynastockan #3 Patrick, Parish Rathdrum, Location: Ballinderry Upper #4 Patrick, Parish Rathdrum, Location: T/Rathdrum Brewery Lane By 1846/47, Michael Brennan/Brennen is in the USA, Lancaster, Erie County, NY - I have looked and looked for him on ship's records but cannot find him. I am wondering if he came through Canada. If his birth year is correct, he would have been about 14 when he arrived here. I know nothing about Michael's father (Patrick) other than the info on his death certificate. By 1850, Michael was a land owner/farmer in Lancaster, Erie County, NY. Did he come with money?? The Brennan/Brennen family in Lancaster, NY attended St. Mary's Catholic Church. I know this isn't much but for the moment it is all I can think of that might help with a time frame. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated. I am interested, not so much in the Richardson name but your own Joyce. Have long been trying to find something of Julia Joyce. Julia was born, I believe, in Co Tipperary in 1836 to Timothy Joyce and Bridgit Moloney. In 1856 she migrated on the "Morresfort" and arrived in Australia and in 1858 married a Richard Gleeson, himself a native of Mullinahone, Tipperary, in the gold mining area of Mount Ararat (now called Stawell, in Victoria). She died in 1921 in Warragul (Victoria), She was my great grand mother, but we know little more of her origins. It seems a long shot, but can you see any possible connection? Paul -----Original Message----- From: Cara_Links [mailto:cracker@hotkey.net.au] Sent: Sunday, December 18, 2005 03:41 To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Wicklow] TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS A Traditional Irish Christmas The Traditional year in Ireland provides a calendar of customs based on Folk Tradition dating back to its Neolithic farming ancestors of six thousand years ago. The Feast of Christmas recalls the joy of Christendom at the birth of the Saviour, a rejoicing fully enjoyed by Irish tradition. There is the lighting of the Christmas candle by the youngest child to welcome the Holy Family into the home. There are the titbits given to the animals in memory of the first to adore Him, the ox and the ass of Bethlehem. There is the churchgoing, the visit to the Crib, the presents and feasting. But behind that there are the echoes of the older festival of Midwinter. What other explanation couth there be for the Hunting of the Wren on St Stephens Day, 26th December, when groups of young men, gaily dressed and playing music from house to house ( or pub to pub) announcing they have killed 'The Wran, the Wran, the king of all Bird's and requesting contributions toward his burial? Needless to say the money gathered is spent on a party with plenty of music, dancing, eating and drinking. And what of Christmas Rhymers or Mummers, a group of young men who perform a little play, the main feature of which is a duel between two champions, in which one is killed to be revived again by a skilled Doctor. Is this, as some think, a survival of some ancient ceremony representing the death of the Old year and the revival of the New? The questions will always be asked - How did it all begin? Passed down through more than 200 generations, some of the festivals are so old that one can only guess where such a rich assembly of belief, custom and ceremonial, of story, song and prophecy came from in the first place. But I do recall my first Christmas in Arklow, Co Wicklow, a trip to Dublin to see the lights spectacular, and the shortest of days, returning to a coal fire, and a warm toddy, memories, that remain with me long after the event. And a longing to be there now, with my extended family and friends, but this year its Christmas in Tasmania again, no so bad, the weather doing a really Irish jig, one day fine the next so cold. But to each and every lister, wherever you are, in the world , whatever you may or may not be doing for Christmas I with my (himself) and family would like to take this moment in time to wish you all a Merry Christmas- And good luck in your pursuit of your Irish ancestors. Some listers have recently been asking about GORE. I'm interested in the GORE surname because it is incorporated in the name of an Irish immigrant to America, namely WILLIAM GORE KING. In the 1850 US census for the Town of Fishkill in Dutchess County, New York, he shows up as age 34, born Ireland. Occupation Merchant. I believe he might have been born in Co. Wicklow, or Co.Wexford, or County Carlow, in the area where these counties merge. Was he the son of a Mr. King and a Miss Gore? Can any KING searchers or GORE searchers help me? Merry Christmas from Joyce in Canada to all listers.
