    3. Hi Cara and listers, Re your recent "John Cullen" - I am still here. My watching brief for the time being is Traynor, Trainor, Trenor etc from Wicklow. Have recently completed listing the Traynors found in "Parochial Registers of Hacketstown (Carlow & Wicklow) , 1820 - 1880" (up to about 1860, anyway), if anyone is interested. I will soon be doing the same thing for Baltinglass. Terry Trainor.

    1. New lister-Niles family
    2. Hi I am keen to learn more about my NILES family from wicklow- according to England Census returns. I have John NILES born 1821-1835 Co Wicklow, his wife Ann with same timespan. Children are Robert circa 1848, Patrick circa 1850, Elizabeth circa 1858 and John and Ann circa 1862 all Co Wicklow. It is possible from IGI that John and ann were married 1860 but that could be guesswork on the submitters part. The family came to Cumberland England I am assuming,1860s - Patrick married there 1870. They were Iron Ore Miners in cumberland, living in Arlecdon, Cleator Moor, Frizington areas. The family are Catholic. If anyone has any info I would be thrilled- I dont even have a village in Co Wicklow, likewise if anyone can point me in the right direction to find out more please do so. Thanks Carol

    3. Hello Cara, Thanks for the following message which was good to read. I am still hopefully watching the Wicklow list for any news on KEOGH. My grandfather, John Shannon married Catherine Keogh from Wicklow County in Sydney in 1867. Catherine came to Sydney on "Northumberland" in 1862 with her brother, John Keogh and they were sponsored by their brother Patrick Keogh who came to Australia on "British Trident in 1861. They settled in the Glebe area of NSW and I have found many other KEOGH in this area but cannot be sure (although it is most likely) that they are all related. Trust you are keeping well, and the Wicklow List has been pretty quiet for for some time now, I agree. It was very sad to hear of the death of Keith Taylor as I had a lot of correspondence from him and he introduced me to Cyril Newcombe and both helped me very much with my research at the time. 3. Saturday Feb 19th 2000 ( Bray People) COUNTY Wicklow lost one of its golfing greats, with the death this week of Greystones man Jimmy Martin. OBITUARY A leading Irish golf professional in the 1960s and early 1970s, the late Jimmy Martin is one of a handful of Wicklow men to have had the distinction of being selected to compete in the prestigious `Ryder Cup' tournament. He was a member of the 1965 British and Irish team which played at Royal Birkdale G.C. and lost to an American team which included such golfing greats as the legendary Arnold Palmer and Billy Casper. Carroll's winner And Jimmy Martin was also a winner of the Carrolls International, an event which preceded the Irish Open and for many years was Ireland's premier golfing tournament. He was a popular winner of that event in the early 1970's, seeing off a field of top Irish and international competitors in a tournament which was staged on his doorstep - at Woodbrook G.C. in neighbouring Bray. Jimmy Martin lived for several years in Britain, and worked for a period as the assistant professional to Arthur Lees at the world famous Sunningdale Golf Course. A talented golfer who was noted for his natural swing and accuracy with iron shots, Jimmy Martin retained his love for the game, and his golfing touch right up until his final illness. He died on Monday morning at St. Columcilles Hospital in Loughlinstown, and was buried at Redford Cemetery following funeral mass on Wednesday (yesterday). Jimmy Martin is survived by his son Glenard.

    3. Saturday March 4 2000 Bray People SPORTING circles in North Wicklow have been greatly saddened by the death of one of the area's sports stalwarts, Denis McGinn, who died at the weekend. Denis (79), a resident of Windgates, Bray, passed away after a short illness at St Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, on Saturday, February 26. One local resident described the man as having been an enthusiast and expert practitioner of any game which had a ball in it, and many local sports figures issued fulsome tributes. The current secretary of Bray Golf Club, of which Denis has been an prominent and active member for many years, was saddened at the news of Denis's death. `Denis was a prominent and greatly esteemed member of this club, and on behalf of all our members I extend condolences to his family at this sad time,' Gerry Montgomery said. North Wicklow people will be familiar with Denis McGinn's prowess in soccer - he was a notable centre-half with Bray Unknowns in the 1930s, and was central in starting up the Bray CYMS soccer club which played in the AUL third division. He was also a celebrated member of Dublin squad Bohemians in the 1930s and 1940s. Denis also had close associations with Arsenal FC, and was a steward at the side's Highbury Stadium for some years after hanging up his boots in the late 40s and early 50s, and, one friend fondly recalled, was a good source for tickets for fellow local Gunners fans. One local man who was beginning his soccer career just as Denis's was coming to a close was Shay Ryan - indeed, both men were fellow members of the Bray Bowling Club in recent years. Says Shay: `I played with Bray Wanderers in the early 50s, and would have crossed swords with Dennis on the pitch on several occasions - he was a tenacious opponent, even at that stage in his career.' `Denis was a great enthusiast for sport, and played any sport that had a ball in it, and applied himself fully - he was extremely competitive and always gave of his best,' Shay recalled. Shay remembers Denis coming to the game of bowls cold about 10 years ago: `And in a short time he was difficult to beat for a man who had only taken up the sport late in life.' `I will remember him fondly - he was a very likeable man, and all I can say is, God help them up in heaven if there isn't a ball to play with,' Shay concluded. Denis was as active and proficient in other areas of his life - a dynamic member of the civil service, he worked in the Department of Social Welfare, as well as Customs & Excise at Dublin Castle, from where he retired in a senior position. Even in retirement, he used his experience to help others, and was a source of endless assistance to elderly people in helping them to process applications and ensure they received their entitlements. One very close friend, Brendan Carroll, summed up Denis's life and outlook by recalling one of the Windgates resident's most oft-quoted expressions: `If McGinn can't do it, it can't be done.' Denis, the husband of the late Mary (nee Murphy) McGinn, is survived by his daughters Kathleen, Mary, Margaret and Carmel, sisters Nan and Gert, and 11 grandchildren. He is also mourned by a huge extended family including his sister-in-law Kathleen, nephews, nieces and other relatives, as well as a huge circle of friends and acquaintances. A large crowd of local people attended his removal from Collier's Funeral Home on Old Connaught Avenue, Bray, on Tuesday evening and funeral yesterday morning (Wednesday). After a requiem Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Greystones, Denis was laid to rest in Redford Cemetery.

    3. Some of you may never have met this wonderful man but --- he called me Ma and we shared much in the way of research, especially the Three Miles Water Wicklow--- he wasnt my son, but he enjoyed the humour of calling me that, but he and his wife Mary did become good friends with some of us through this list ******** It is with much sadness that I write to inform you of the sudden death of my Friend Keith Taylor on the morning of Saturday 22nd April 2006. The family are in shock at how quickly events took their course. Some of you may be aware that last year Keith was diagnosed with cancer. Some of you may now be just finding this out but Following a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy the tumour appeared to have reduced, and he seemed to be a lot brighter and happier within himself. Recently the pain and discomfort re-emerged, and he became quite frail and unsteady. During the early hours of Saturday 22nd, he took a fall while at home, and as a consequence was taken to hospital by ambulance. Initially, following routine tests, he appeared to be making a slight improvement. In fact he was reported to have been chatting to the doctors and nursing staff from around 9.00am. Within the next 2 hours his health deteriorated dramatically, and he passed away at 11.20am. The deterioration was so rapid, family members were unable to be with him when he died. The cause of death would appear to be complications with the cancer and a blood clot in his lungs. He will be dearly missed by his family --- a fun loving and wonderful friend called home Cara
