    2. Hi Barbara You might be able to learn more about your great grandfather who served with the contabulary by contacting the Garda Archive/Museum. The email address is [email protected] I received a full print out page of my great grandfather's brother and learned his DOB, height, address, length of service and former occupation among other things. Stephanie in sunny Ventura, California I am searching for any information about my maternal great grandfather Richard Fulham.? The only place I can find him in Ireland is with his birth in Wicklow in 1824 and he `served in the constabulary.? I find him next in Madison, Wisconsin in the 1860 census married to Bridget Smith born in County Mayo.? Barbara Corotto; [email protected]

    3. Is to make contact with those researching the same name as yourself, but in the initial stages of a research, I do think it is much nicer if you can post your family to the front of the list, and then if you desire take it behind list. First and foremost, there are many listers on this list that do not post in the first few hours of a roll call, they sit back and they read, then they think aobut what they have before they begin asking or sharing. So if you opt to post your family search behind the list you miss a valuable exercise in having your data placed in the open forum of the Archives to be found in due course possibly many months from now, as long as you keep your email address updated at all times you will receive eventually contact from someone that may not even be a lister, and this I can vouch by saying a posting I made 7 years ago has now given me the valuable input I needed to go one step further in my own research, so thats put another crack in my wall. So that is my 10 cents worth, of why I like to see the initial research posted to the front of list, in fact I myself have not answered to many researchers as yet, and shared what I may have gleaned over the last few months from paper work that is being typed up on a daily base here at home. I keep wondering if anyone wants to move in with this crankee old woman and become my secretary, we would have lots of laughs at times .........oh I know stop your moaning Cara and get on with it all. Cheers from here where the sun is shining but no warmth Cara

    3. Dear Rod as you are researrching in an area that crosses three borders that being Wicklow, Carlow and Wexford, you are going to need to be observant on that issue In fact Lord Fitzwilliam was a landlord not an agent and from memory his main man at one time was Robert Chaloner, among others but I dont in fact recall a Michael John Burke, but that is only because I need to dust off the cobwebs of the work I did in this area, but seeing as it a topic on two lists I will be going through some data I have here and will take careful notes if I see one Michael John Burke -------- of interest though there is a Burke line in the Aughavannah and Aughrim area also, that has my interest as well. It also appears that some of the papers needed for the Carnew area are housed with the Wentworth papers in UK, and no one to date ( or no one has reported to the list yet) has been able to get a sighting of them. Only way you could pick up good information on landowners of Carnew is to buy that ticket to Ireland and go and research in their manuscript rooms for data, but may I suggest that you also take a look at the pages for IGP Co Carlow as they do hold lots of records for the area. A google should pull the pages up for you, or this may lead you there Carlow Website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/ or http://www.igp-web.com/carlow/index.htm Cheers for now Cara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rod & Glen Smith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 26, 2009 8:07 PM Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] Michael John Burke, agent/factor 1840s > I'm researching a gentleman by the name of Michael John Burke who came to > New Zealand in 1850. 3. Weekly Telegraph ( International) 2 July 1992 CORTEGE IN 250 MILE PUB CRAWL An Irish Grandmother whose dying wish was that her coffin should be taken on tour of her six favourite pubs got her way when mourners turned her wake into a 250 mile pub crawl. The tweny car funeral cortege headed by a flower decked hearse and two chauffeur- driven cars, set off from Peterborough, Huntingfosnhire, England, at 8-30am and wound its way through England and Wales, arriving at Haverfordwest, Dyfed twelve hours later. From there, after drinking the Bull Inn dry, the 100 mourners, mostly Irish Travellers, went on to Fishguard where they caught the overnight ferry to Rosslare ( Wexford). The cortege was following the last instructiosn of MRS. JOHANNA CONNORS, who died in Peterborough's district hospital on 10th June 1992 aged 70. At the end of the trip she was buried in New Ross County Wexford. At the Marbrook pub in Bromsgrove Hereford and Worcester, the funeral party arrived unannounced for lunch and spent more than 500 pounds on drinks and 130 pound on food. Mr Herbie John 56, The Bull Inn's landlord said:"First they drank all the Guiness and they they they polished off all the lager. It's the first time I have ever had to go and borrow supplies so I could open the next day. They even cleaned out the fish and chip shop, which closed early because they had nothing left." A firend said Mrs Connors had been from a well known travelling family in Ireland. SHe emigrated with her husband to England during the 1950's, but Mr. Connors had died ten years later. Mourners at the Funeral left New Ross earlier than planned for their journey home because most pubs in the town stayed shut after the funeral.

This area covers quite a few parishes but towns associated with the family are Baltinglass and Kiltegan.? They were?affiliated with the Church of Ireland. Their youngest child - my gr grandfather - was John, born in Kyle in 1855.??John's sister,?Deborah married Ben HORAN in Dublin in 1862 - the document says her father William was a farmer.? Ben became a policeman.? All the other children of William and Hannah emigrated to Canada and the US in the early 1860s.? Their names were Thomas (with the Dublin garda police for 1 year abt 1854), George, William, Alice, Catherine, Hannah,?Elizabeth and my gg grandfather John.? I know?all about?the children and their families but would like to learn more about the parents William and Hannah - who were their parents and siblings???? I haven't had any luck finding birth, death, burial, land, military, obituary, probate or headstone records for William and Hannah - though it is believed that William died in the early 1860s and Hannah outlived him. Thanks everyone for reading this - would love to hear from you if you have any knowledge or connection to this family. Stephanie in California [email protected] ?

    2. Rod & Glen Smith
    3. I'm researching a gentleman by the name of Michael John Burke who came to New Zealand in 1850. Until recently all we have known is that he was the son of Rev John and Mary Burke of Kilcolgan, County Galway, and became a barrister about 1840. However we now believe he might have been employed in the Carnew area in Co Wicklow. If he was a landlord's agent or factor we wonder how many large land owners there were in the Carnew area. The main one showing on Griffiths seems to be Earl Fitzwilliam. Does anybody know where I can find good information on landowners in the Carnew area in the 1840s? Or has anybody seen any references to landowners' agents in the the Carnew area in the 1840s, or even seen the name Michael John Burke? Many thanks. Rod Smith, Wellington, New Zealand.
