    3. Peggy to begin with my son is in Heaven I actually did not word that too good I meant I had a direct line to heaven as regards weather. I have told you twice now the name of the Graveyard its Avoca Old ....in fact its been posted in mails today. I guess if himself is already there, I will be flying, or eating more chicken and growing feathers and coming in with a bird or two, migration they call that dont they. But seeing as I have been living in Ireland for 6 months of every year for the past 25 years with the exception of the last three, I guess I can find my own way to the aulde land these days. Even if I have to walk. But being married into, an Arklow family does not mean we have free accomodation, or free travel. We are an independent part of that family and like to pay our own way as well. Now back to genealogy folk enough banter no one seems to be seeing the humour for the woods at the moment Cheers from here Cara

Good heavens there is so many graveyards in the surrounding area around Avoca all be it some a little further away than the main street of Avoca She could have been buried there couldnt she ? 1. [IRL-WICKLOW] Snell
    2. Maurie O'Connor
    3. My g-g-grandmother, Catherine Snell, arrived in Geelong in 1855 - information on shipping document states that she was aged 20, CofE, could read and write (couldn't sign her name though) and was born in Wicklow. She was indentured to a storekeeper/butcher for three months. Three weeks after her arrival she married a Frenchman - both used assumed names (some serious research here!). It is likely, but not proven, that he had jumped ship and that she 'escaped' from her indentured employment. Catherine married under the name of Jane Stuart, daughter of John Stuart and Catherine Smith and said her father was a Hotel Keeper and that she was born in Wicklow and was aged 20. The birth registration of the first son, John Napoleon, born in 1856, was also under the assumed names, but this time she gives her name as Hannah Jane Simpson, nee Stewart, and her age as 19. The birth registrations of the following children all show her name as Catherine Snell. All the boys in the large family have French names (with the exception of that first one), and it looks as though she may have named the three girls - Mary Ann, Kate Loney and Eleanor Violet (but this may have been a concession to her husband - child was known as Leon). I'm not even sure about her religion. All the children were RC but the family, in general, seemed not too serious about the matter, and chopped and changed. I wonder if it was a matter of which church was closest. Her death registration in 1906, Aged 82 years (?) states parents' names "Unknown" but again states that she was born in Wicklow. One assumes that, amongst the fibs which were told at the time of marriage and the birth of the first child, there are a few grains of truth. It is likely that her father was John Snell - possibly a hotel keeper, she was born in Wicklow about 1835, her mother may have been Mary or Catherine - and could there have been a Loney connection? Always a chance that a spark of recognition might be ignited. Cheers Barbara

    3. Hi Cara No evidence re my Bridget Niles nee Sullvan other than her 3 kids susannah patrick and Robert were baptised Avoca parish, Im thinking she died after Roberts birth as the next little Niles -Ann was born circa 1856 and I THINK she had a different mam probably Ann? Ann was John Niles wfe when they came to england. You have indeed got me thinking, maybe my Niles moved from avoca after Roberts baptism as I havent found a baptism for Ann circa 1856, elzabeth circa 1859 and John and Ellen (twins?) circa 1862- Elzabeth Ellen and John say Wicklow as county of baptism. Ann died before a census could be taken. When I discover where John married Ann- and maybe even a Mary as you have hinted before due to various spellings maybe I will find the baptisms. Hopefully finding out where a lot of the miners who came to cumberland England were shortly before leaving Ireland may help? As for evidence of Bridgets burial, Im holding very lttle hope as unless a headstone is found THEN I CANT THINK OF ANY EVIDENCE AT ALL. You know I like to dream and what a nicer resting place could you wish for. Of course all the other places you mention- and a lot you dont are all in my head as well, wouldnt it be something if a headstone for Bridget Niles wife of John, mother of Susanna Patrick and Robert, daughter of Patrick Sullvan and connected to Susannah Sullivan crops up. In my dreams:) You know- ITS JUST DAWNED ON ME AFTER READING YOUR MAIL they may well have left Wicklow for a whle cos I dont have any indcation of where Ann was born and the gap between Robert 1851and Ann circa 1856 is when I think Bridget died- thanks Cara for getting me going again. Sometimes I've gone 3 times in a 12 month period. lol And I've been there every month of the year. I think November is the worst month. I was there last September, and again last April. and I've booked the Brookview for next April, if I don't go over again before that. I don't have a worry about money...poor auld widowoman that I am. And yes, I took a picture of the little "Church" house, with the new extension. I've also been down the road in Kilmagig, and walked back to bridge. Not even an ache in my muscles. AND I smoked my fags all the way. I'm guessing I should ask DAZ the name of this little cemetery. You asked for input. I gave mine. I travel alone, as you know, so I only pay half of what most of the listers will pay. Will you be traveling with Himself or flying? staying with your son? Not all the folks are that lucky, I think. 3. Hello all, I have done very little family tree research over the last 6 months, but Cara's emails have prompted me to action, to brush off some of the dust that is gathering on the family tree papers and files. I am always looking out for VANSTON in Wicklow, particularly Anne Elizabeth VANSTON , born circa 1861 somewhere in Wicklow, to John VANSTON (originally from Queen's County) and Anne BOGGS. (All COI thus far). I also always keep an eye out for ELLIS or CRAINE in or near Arklow. Since I last posted, I was delighted to find out that Thomas ELLIS married Rhoda CRAINE, in North Strand Church, Dublin in 1887. The marriage certificate confirmed that Thomas's father was Charles ELLIS, whitesmith. The witnesses may be of interest to others, they were Samuel Stedmond and Rhoda Sherwood (who married each other a few years later in Arklow). I believe Thomas's father, is the Charles Ellis who married Eliza Ellis (widow) in St Saviours Church, Arklow in 1852. Witnesses William LINDSAY and Maria CULLEN. Eliza's father was Richard MANIFOLD, parish clerk. Rhoda Craine's parents were Charles CRAINE and Jane SHERWOOD. It turns out that they were married in St Mark's Church, Dublin in 1862. Witnesses Richard Rothwell SHERWOOD and Phoebe GREGORY. Thank you Linda

    3. It is an amazing graveyard isn't it, not only because of the steepness of it but the likelhood is that the graves would have been dug into solid rock, I suspect it was only for the "thin uns" that required little effort in being carried up there and kept grave digging to a minimum. It is possible to get to that graveyard from a dirt road through the woods directly above it though.

And the weather in April cant be compared to the weather in June - and as you dont come to Ireland in June you cant compare the weather, after all it may rain more yet, in April than June or the other way round, but as I have a son up there, and hes been put on notice we want some fine weather in June, I have faith the weather will better in June. Yes I do know the graveyard, and its been photographed and transcribed, once by Daz and once by Himelf, its a shame that you never took the long walk after that to Kilmagig, you would have been very fit by then.I also know the history of the mans house, did you get a photo of that as well? Photos are available for sending to listers, of Graveyards in and Around Avoca some having already been posted to the IGP page others wont be posted there until I finish writing the sequel to my first book on the headstones and graveyards of the area.
