    3. I also have George Jenkinson married to Hannah Smith (born c. 1841) but no date of marriage for them either. Way back when I was putting the tree together for some reason I have George's father, William Jenkinson married to Hannah Smith or Somebody....... yes, that dreaded "Somebody". No, there hasn't been a change. I have doubts about William being married to a Hannah Smith. His wife was Hannah, but without a marriage it is hard to know the surname for sure. Hence my query to the list. Yes, I have all of George's children, thanks. So I gather that you are also still looking for the marriage of William Jenkinson to a Hannah. Thanks Joyce

    3. I am working on my JENKINSON famiy at present, and would be delighted if someone knows of the marriage of WILLIAM JENKINSON (born 1795, baptised at Wicklow Parish Church). I know he married a HANNAH, and possibly as HANNAH SMITH, but I don't have the date or place of their marriage. Hope someone can help. Joyce (Tunstead)

    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] A REQUEST FROM YOUR ADMIN TO:-
    2. Cara_Links
    3. Please remove from the body of the mail all data that does not link to your subject heading. Please change the subject heading to what it links to within the mail. Those of you who receive digest mail, please change the subject when replying to any part of your digest mail and also delete all other parts that do not relate to the said subject Reasons behind this request that is made very often to all my lists is this:- When people are searching the archives using the search engine, place in it there surname search or if its for eg. Guilds they are looking they use that word. They do not stop to look at a mail that says Digest no 6million vol 17 etc that is not of any use to them at all. Which of course then applies to the mails received in the L Mode. So please exercise these simple requests and it makes the list flow nicely and the archived material easier to use. 1. [IRL-WICKLOW] LUKE BYRNE and family
    2. Ann Burns
    3. Thank you so very much Cara and Colette and Joyce. I can't express enough gratitude for the help I've received on this list. A lead from here to my 3rd g grandparents eventually brought me to Coolross in person where I met living relatives with whom I'm now in close contact. That event has changed so much for my family - all for the good. I'm glad I posted the birth/death of baby Arthur Byrne. It was actually in error that I put it on this list but I must say it is the only one that has generated a response. I did not know of Michael born in 1875 to Luke and Bridget and am thrilled with the information. Luke's grandfather was Michael Byrne of Coolross. I found that my "missing Luke" was visiting George and Maria Byrne on Main St. in Tinahely at the time of the 1911 census. I'm still trying to connect that couple to my family at Coolross/Clonegal but as Byrne is such a common name that might be a red herring. The name George was used in my Byrne family. I've been unable to find that couple in 1901 census. No deaths of Luke Byrne seem to match what the family maintains. He and Bridget are buried in the cemetery at Aghowle but without a gravestone. Does anyone know where to find records for that cemetery? In 1911 one of Luke's young sons, Edward, was at Coolross/Ballingate with Byrne relatives and the other, Arthur, was in Knockloe/Rath with Keoghs. I knew the family was in Leitrim at the time of the 1901 census but have no idea why they moved there from Tullow or when they came back. Family lore has Bridget Corcoran Byrne dying of grief rather than childbirth, somewhere in Wicklow or Carlow but it could well have happened in Leitrim. No death records have turned up and if the babies died before being baptised they would not be buried in the RC cemetery. Perhaps they are among the babies rumoured to be buried in a rath near the family farm. Again it could be misleading, but the fact that young Arthur was boarding with a Kehoe family has me excited. My ggg grandmother Eliza was a Kehoe. She married Arthur Byrne circa 1820 but no records are available. I've been unsuccessful in tracking the Kehoes although recently found a potential lead in Corragh near Clonegal. My family lived/lives so close to the Carlow/Wexford/Wicklow border that to this day all three counties figure in their postal address. Once again, many many thanks. Ann Burns Ottawa ON

    3. Dear Ann, I note that in 1901 I note living at Clonnatin Road also known as Pot Lane is Luke Byrne but he is listed as a farmer aged 61 not married Born Co Wexford So this was within the townl of Gorey so the Byrne family you seek may be in Rural Wexford just outside of Gorey. A Bridget Byrne died 12th June 1901 she was aged 63 years and her last known address was Gorey Hill ( out of the town of Gorey) Buried in the Gorey Cemetery. Which to my reckoning for child birth may mean she was too old for having children but she is the only Bridget in your time frame to die in Gorey. But travelling on there are three Arthur Byrnes who died in Gorey Arthur aged 64 died Tara Hill 18/7/1973 Arthur aged 50 Died in the Work house Gorey aged 50 5/3/1850 Arthur aged 75 died in Gorey 2/4/1872 aged 75 Interred Gorey Cemetery I then have these two Luke Byrnes 1- Died 11/1/1881 in Gorey aged 76 2- Died in Gorey aged 62 19/4/1901 I can find nothing to match the children Eleanor and Catherine unless they died unmarried I have no hope of matching those names. And of course I have no idea if this is of any use to you at all. But at least you know I have looked for you I feel you would know of Michael born 19/4/1875 to your Arthur and Bridget Corcoran and North City Dublin --- Cheers for the moment Cara > > My Arthur Byrne was living in Dublin at 15 Amiens St, in 1868 but no trace > of > him was found subsequent to that date. Heres a baptism 28 April 1859 BRAY RC John Donnelly and Ester Redmond were the parents of Eugeneus Donnelly. The sponsors were Patritio Redmond and Maria Lawless. Lets hope this is of use to someone I wouldnt care but Ive looked at Esther Donnelly nee Redmond before as Im sure its her on 1901 census at Woodlands Kilcoole age 69, living with son Michael Donnelly and his family and other son John. I also think this Esther died 1903 in Rathdrum area- curtesy of familysearch plot site What made me think Eugeneus mam was a different Esther Donnelly is that family search show Esther Redmonds kids to have dad Thomas Donnelly. Maybe she married a John Donnelly- he died and so she married maybe a brother? My motto remains assume even the wildest thoughts but never believe them till they are proved. 1. [IRL-WICKLOW] death of infant Arthur Byrne - 1902
    2. Ann Burns
    3. Hello I was searching for my own ancestors and struck out, but having paid 5 Euros, I thought I would share this record in hope that it helps someone else. Arthur Byrne, aged one day, died 24 Jul 1902 at 4 Magenta Place, Kingstown, Co Dublin. He was the son of Arthur Byrne of that same address. He was RC and was buried in Deansgrange graveyard in the parish of the same name. The note says only: G 72 N - which I don't understand but possibly it is the site of his grave within the cemetery. My Arthur Byrne was living in Dublin at 15 Amiens St, in 1868 but no trace of him was found subsequent to that date. His other children were born in the 1860s so there's no possibility this was my family. My Arthur and his wife Bridget Corcoran had two daughters - Eleanor Mary and Catherine Frances, born in 1862 and 1863 respectively. (I've found no trace of these girls.) They had son Luke in 1868, who subsequently married Bridget Murphy in Tullow and had two sons Edward and Arthur. I do know the descendants of these two lads. Luke (the baker) died according to stories, in Gorey, sometime after the 1911 census. His wife died shortly after childbirth circa 1903 when the twin baby girls died. It is not known if she died in Leitrim where they had been living, or in Tullow near her own parents. If any of this sounds familiar I'd love to be in touch. Ann Burns Ottawa ON

    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] GLOSSARY OF TERMS STONEMASONS
    2. Cara_Links
    3. Some Glossary of terms on Stonemasons ASHLAR:- A block of stone cut to have squared sides often used instead of brick in the construction of old buildings. The faces of the stone were usually left smooth but a soft stone Ashlar could be tooled to give them a decorative finish BANKER:-This was the mason who carved stones into shapes on a huge stone bench ( banker stone) before it went to the fixer masons to put in positions on the building. The banker mason marked each stone he had carved with his own unique symbol. FREESTONE:- Stone that could be cut in any direction, as opposed to another stone known as "ragstone" a term given to any stone that was hard to work with the chisel Freestone to be of value must be soft enough to cut and carved easily without chattering and splitting. MASTER MASON:- A Stonemason at the very top of his careet, capable of undertaking and supervising every single aspect of stonework from cutting and shaping to the role of architect. Masters might specialise in carving work or basic paving slabs, but all employed JOURNEYMEN and took on apprentices, and had higher incomes that the ordinary stonemason JOURNEYMAN:- the word that made me go fossicking for further information on such a man, as it appeared next to Apothecaries and other clases of Job Descriptions and discovered that He is an Itinerant one who moves about in pursuit of his work.......... So a stone mason Journeyman has served his apprenticeship under a master mason, or learned the trade as a labourer, and once he has learnt the trade he can work for years under the one master. Or travel the country in search of work, be it construction or repair work on- as did Journeyman Apothecaries etc. In 1831 the FRIENDLY SOCIETY OF OPPERATIVE STONEMASONS Of England, Ireland and Wales ( FSOS) was established, by adopting a strategy of conciliation that kept disputes to a minium,it grew in strength to become a corner stone of building trades and unionism throughout the 19th Century. They called a strike in 1877 in support of a claim for 10d an hour, which in turn was defeated, which lead to wage cuts, and longer hours for thousands of stonemasons and from that point on the society went into delcine. In 1921 it re-emerged under the name Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers after merging with bricklayers societies. And Although not an Irish site worth a browse is this one:- http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/library/mrc/subject_guides/family_history/stone/ Cheers Cara

    3. Hi Valerie Perhaps Miss BOND had died pre 1901? Or had married? Or had moved from Rathgar Avenue? There is one possible on the census - Adelaide Bond at Mellifont Avenue, Kingstown, aged 57 (so born c. 1844, which might be a bit early?). Did John and Christiana have any other children? Emily (44) and Ada (38) lived at Terenure Road in 1901, which is not far from Rathgar Avenue. I had a look at the headstones for Mount Jerome (Dublin archives) but there's nothing for either Bond or Higginson, but perhaps it hasn't been transcribed yet. I assume that Mount Jerome can't help you with Miss Bond's first name?
