    3. Christina, I was lucky, had a lot of first hand memories to sort through. My father in law was in the Royal Fusaliers (spelliing) in Scotland before coming to Aust. Was here in Sydney pre war together with the males of the family and his to be brothers in law. My father in law didn't marry until 1923 in Sydney to a Scotish woman (born about 10 miles from him in Farr Sutherland) and they had 3 sons, I married the one born 1930. There were Mackay's everywhere and lots of chat. Some of the main stuff they didn't say or I (not being into reseach at that time) didn't absorb. Still two sisters alive and in late 80's who I keep in touch with. Think it is time I tweak the elder one's brain again. Some questions I have need answering. 3. Paddy, I was wondering. I kept seeing two "boys" close together. The one that got me was two GLOSTERS in Co. Kerry. I imagine it was one of the few jobs open to men, so the younger followed the older brother. Even now people join the military because they can't find a job. A guy who was volunteering at our library while trying to find a computer job, just joined the army. So, it still goes on. And looking at possible brothers gives you other place/places to look for records. 3. Dan, The records show the date the person enlisted eg 14 Oct 1853. Almost all records say single when they enlisted. The date means he got married on 11 April 1871 to a lady from County Kerry. They don't give the wife's name. Only her county. Probably because they moved them to a new county if they married a local girl. The only assignment they are showing is Monaghan which I usually spell out. 16362 WHELAN, James 21 14 Oct Wicklow C[atholic] s 11 Apr '71 Kerry Lab Mon[aghan]. 1853. He was 5'11 There is a second page that usually tells when or how the person left the service. Died, pensioned, discharged, that sort of thing. I have not copied each of these pages, but I can check it if this is your man. You can see the image at: http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/8609334/1/RIC?h=2ec764 The letters on the far right of the image have to do with promotions or something you would need to have a long list of abbreviations to figure out. I don't know what they stand for. I hope this helps. But they joined WW1, brothers and brothers in law. All must have had a pow wow and decided to all join together. 1. [IRL-WICKLOW] CULLEN
    2. Cara_Links
    3. Bill, You say they had children in Ireland before they left were they born in Waterford? I could suggest that with a double barrelled surname within your name of John FLEMING Cullen that perhaps you are looking for a CULLEN _ FLEMING line for his parentage. What did your man work at in St Louis? this sometimes helps to find the place of where they came from. But as you say they were living in Waterford , before they left they must have been there for some kind of work also. Are there any other clues that links them to Wicklow ? you do not tell us why you say they came from Wicklow I have plenty of this name in my data base and I am aware the Moore and FLeming name is there also, so with a little more information or even some *fancy thinking on your part* can also place us in a better position to advise you more Religion? Work? And where did you glean what data you have from? Oh and of course somtimes I do ask what was the dogs name? Cheers for the moment Cara
