    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] a shot in the dark in Co Wicklow
    2. Ann Burns
    3. Hello listers I have found a photo of my uncle taken somewhere in Co Wicklow in 1945. He and my Dad, his brother, were on leave after the war. They took a ferry from England where both had been stationed, and had a holiday in Dublin. One day they took a bus to Co Wicklow, knowing only that was where the family had originated. Neither could remember where the bus ended up. Three generations earlier, the family emigrated during the famine from Coolross near Shillelagh but in 1945 they knew only the county. It was almost 100 years later but our connection to Ireland was very strong. Is there SKS who knows of anywhere I might send a digital image on the wild chance that somebody could identify the place in this picture? It was through this list that I found our original home place to be Coolross. Who knows, good fortune may strike again. Ann Burns Ottawa, ON Canada

    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] Pharr of Ballinastoe
    2. Frank Kehoe
    3. I have a connection with the Pharr family of Ballinastoe in the next parish. Two marriages in the Church of Ireland, Calary, Co.Wicklow that may have a remote connection to your search: (1) 14 Jul 1896, Ellen Pharr(1878-1959) to William Wallace Ireland(1862-1936) of Downshill, son of William Wallace Ireland(1828-1898) and Mary Bryan(1826-1910). (2) 17 Jul 1901, Mary Anne Pharr(1879-1929) to Thomas Keeley(1879-1939) of Balledmunduff, Co.Dublin, son of John Keeley, farmer. Ellen & Mary Anne were two of about nine children of James Pharr(1838-1910) of Ballinastoe and Ellenor Hendy(1848-1927). James Pharr being the son of James Pharr/Phair(1798-1869) and Elizabeth Jane Owens(1796-1871). Regards, Frank Kehoe PS. Anyone have information on Pharr of Ballinastoe and/or Powerscourt in the early 1800's? It would be appreciated. -----Original Message----- From: Trunthsams@aol.com Sent: Thursday, April 07, 2011 10:55 PM To: irl-wicklow@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] ROE KEALY IRELAND We have just found some of the family in Kilkenny but we can't toss aside family lore that the Kealy/Roes came from Wicklow. 1. [IRL-WICKLOW] ROE KEALY IRELAND
    2. We have just found some of the family in Kilkenny but we can't toss aside family lore that the Kealy/Roes came from Wicklow. Family lore is Enniskerry. We have found Bridget Kealy, a servant, marrying Thomas Ireland in Kilkenny. Not one of Bridget's family is in Kilkenny. Her parents are Patrick and Mary Ann Kealy. She has known sisters, Julia and Mary Ann. Mary Ann married John Roe and had 7 surviving children and this family emigrated to Canada by 1858 as an intact family. Julia went to Boston by 1855 most likely as a servant and married there in 1857. Based upon the names of the Kealy females' children, it is suspected that Frances, Emily, and Elizabeth are Kealy names. It is suspected that John, Robert, and Nicholas are Roe names, and George, and Edward are Kealy names. A connection of Thomas to other Irelands in Kilkenny is not proven. William is certainly an Ireland name. There is one instance of a Roe child stating he was born in Wexford. Wexford, Kilkenny, and Wicklow seem to form a triangle of habitation. The Kealy women seem to be born between 1812 and 1824. They marry about 1838-1848. The Irelands are still in Ireland through 1885, the Roes are gone by 1858. There had to be remaining Kealys including Bridget after 1880. Bridget is not known to have left Ireland. Does anyone recognize these names and may be connected? Any finds you know of will be appreciated. We have searched the Kilkenny site and have most of that. They are around Burnchurch and James Green. Bonnie in California

    3. Hi Revell Clements died about 1890 and on 27th June 1890 an ad in the Irish Times said there was to be an executors sale of the farm and livestock and machinery at Coolawinna. The sale was on Monday June 30th. Probate of his will was on 5th July 1890, the executors being Richard Vape Cowl and George Mathew Saunders. On June 8th 1901 a J. Clements was selling his rights in a farm at Coolawinna in the Irish Times. One of these farms was purchased by John Valentine and on Dec 3rd 1902 a Thomas King seriuosly attacked a James Murphy of Rathnew and King then went towards Coolawinna where he had worked as a labourer and he was found hiding in a stable of Mr Valentines. (Mr Murphy was not expected to survive) On August 5th 1908 a report in the Irish Times tells us that a fatal shooting happened in Coolawinna. John Wilkinson from High St Wicklow was found by his brother George. They heard the deceased's dog barking and went in thet direction to Clements Corner, there they found the body near his boat and his gun in the bottom of the boat, discharged. The coroner found it to be an accidental shooting. Dr James H Halpin of the Wicklow dispensary gave evidence about how he had died. Coolawinna has been written as Coolawinnia sometimes And lastly in Nov 2002 a Revell Clements was engaged to Samantha Wilson. He is the son of Sarah and the late William Clements of Rathnew. Brendan

    3. Well, Thomas Halpin’s father James Halpin had the Bridge Tavern in Wicklow Town, so if the Buckley’s had the Powerscourt Arms Hotel, the families had this in common. Bill From: irl-wicklow-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-wicklow-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Michael Seery Sent: Monday, 28 March 2011 6:44 PM To: irl-wicklow@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IRL-WICKLOW] Buckley and Monastery House Thanks for kind words. I haven't come across Halpin or Dillan, but Buckley was a very well established name in Enniskerry in the 19th century. They ran the Powerscourt Arms hotel in the late 1800/early 1900's (see this article for a story on that http://enniskerryhistory.org/home/index.php/archives/172) and a Lawrence photo shows a shop in the village with the Buckley sign over it - this would have been well into the early 1900s. As far as I know, there are no Buckleys left today. More interestingly for you though, I came across a map in the Powerscourt papers which shows the Monastery townland. Monastery is just north of the village, and Monastery house about 10 minutes walk from the village centre. The map is undated, but a few clues indicate it would be about 1830. It shows "John Buckley's land" (which would mean it was leased from Powerscourt, and "John Buckley's house", right about where Monastery house is. Edward Ward was a very close neighbour. Perhaps Thomas married May Ann and they moved into Monastery house? So given Buckley's strong business presence in the village, I wouldn't be surprised if they did live at Monastery. Richard (1838), John Charles (1886), Benjamin (1756), Francis and John (1766), Richard (1796), Thomas (1837), Robert (1849), Benjamin (1846), Francis (1862), Henry (1856), John (1883), Francis (1896) and Isabella Buckley (1912) are all mentioned in the Powerscourt papers for leases at various stages. I haven't looked, but there must be more listed in Griffith survey, which would be around the time you are interested in. It might be worth your while posting to the discussion board on the website, as some locals who mightn't look at genealogy forums might see it and know more. 3. Further to my earlier reply regarding Captain Halpin: ...About 12 o'clock the people of Enniskerry were considerably enlivened, and something almost approaching to excitement was occasioned, by the appearance of three distinguished persons who walked most unostentatiously down the principal street of the little town.  The form of one of the three was at once recognised as that of the most popular lord of the soil, and it very soon oozed out that his companions were none other than Mr Gladstone and Lord Talbot de Malahide.  Opposite the National School the party met two well known local gentlemen, one of whom was Captain Halpin (a brother of the celebrated commander of the Great Eastern), and the other Mr Byrne, one of Lord Powerscourt's tenantry, and a gentleman somewhat largely engaged in farming pursuits.  With both the ex-Premier, on being introduced by Lord Powerscourt, warmly shook hands and entered into conversation, principally on the subject of agriculture, to which it may be mentioned Captain Halpin now also devotes his attention.  Mr Gladstone, amongst other inquiries, desired to know if Egyptian wheat was largely sown in Ireland, to which the burly and good-humoured-looking captain (the beau ideal, by the way, of a naval officer) replied that he believed that some of that description of wheat had come into the country, but that he had not used any of it himself.  The Powerscourt National School (which receives a grant of £50 annually from Lord Powerscourt) was then visited.  Mr. Gladstone inspected the hand writing of some of the pupils, and the sewing of the girls, with which he said he was much pleased.  He also remarked the cleanliness of the children, and their comfortable, well clad appearance.  The children sang "God save the Queen" very creditably, and when the right hon. gentleman took his departure cheered him... - [Irish Times, Thurs, Nov 1, 1877. 3. Hi Michael. A marvellous site. I have a couple: Thomas HALPIN married Mary Ann DILLAN, respective fathers James Halpin and Thomas BUCKLY. The record comes from the Ireland Vital Records series at FamilySearch, giving the marriage at Powerscourt, Wick(low) on 18 April 1854. Thomas James Halpin was, or perhaps had been, a sea captain, born Wicklow Town in 1822. He had extensive family in Wicklow Town so I am not sure why he was in Powerscourt. His wife would seem to be a widow and perhaps Powerscourt is where she lived. His younger brother was Captain Robert Charles Halpin. His wife Mary Ann died at Enniskerry 10 years later, on 10 October 1864, according to an obit found in the Cork Examiner. Thomas died at Monastery House, Enniskerry, on 2nd June 1878, aged 56 according to a memorial inscription in the Halpin family burial enclosure at Wicklow Church. I would like to learn what Monastery House was. I doubt that he owned the house. Would he (or he and his wife) have lived in an apartment within, or in the grounds of, the house? If there are any local mentions of this man or couple I would be very pleased to see them. 3. Thanks for kind words. The body was "Hi Valerie, Registry of Deeds, Henrietta St., Dublin Book: 773, page 499, memorial 5242335. Wright & Others to Johnson. 18/7/1822; contains the reference to Aris Brass Sherwood. It is a long and complicated Memorial concerning the bankruptcy of Samuel Johnson. I can supply my reading of it should you have an interest.
