    3. Hi Just browsing for Morris and on the website I found a Chamney (I think) that is listed as Cha- in the database but if you look at the original entry seems to be Chamney. Don't know if its of any use: http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/reels/c-584-3-1-024.pdf Brendan -- Brendan Dixon Educational Technologist UCD IT Services, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland Vox: 353 1 7162008 Fax: 353 1 2837077 P Save Paper - Do you really need to print this e-mail?

    3. Cara might like to comment on this, but my understanding is that the Penal Laws of the 1700s made it illegal for (a) Catholics to own land, or was it to buy land, and (b) a Protestant to be married by a Catholic priest. These laws were gradually repealed in the 1800s but, in the meantime, many Catholics became Protestant, and then changed back again after the laws were changed. Not sure when the abovementioned laws changed, but perhaps possible that if Ireland/Kealy marriage was after repeal, perhaps one party had returned to his/her original faith. Cheers Barbara

    1. [IRL-WICKLOW] I need some thoughts. . .
    2. Back to ROE IRELAND KEALY/KEELEY and now COLE Family lore is that John Roe married Mary Ann Kealy in Wicklow and had the following children about 1840-1855 Robert, Nicholas, Julia, John, Elizabeth Frances, Edward Thomas, and George. They immigrated to Canada about 1856 and got a Crown Land Grant there for two lots in Renfrew Cty, ON. They are on the tax rolls in 1857 there. Once in Canada John was always a farmer as were his sons. John signed his name with an X which leads the thinking that John was a farmer in Ireland and lacked education. His sons could sign their names but barely. The two older sons would have had all the education if any in Ireland. We know Elizabeth had beautiful handwriting and was literate. She went to school in Ontario. We know Julia corresponded with friends as we have a letter to Julia from a friend. The family apparently went intact to Canada. I have not found them on a ship's list. There is no example of Mary Ann's writing. Julia Kealy went to Massachusetts in 1853 and married a Portugese stevedore, Antonio Josephs, in 1855. They move in 1871 to Renfrew Cty to be near MaryAnn and the Roes. This family had money. The son became a doctor. Julia signed her name and I gather she was literate. We have found a record in Kilkenny that Thomas Ireland married Bridget Kealy and the record is in the Catholic Church. The Irelands who seem connected to Thomas were not Catholic. Everyone in this family group is not Catholic. So why would this marriage have been in the Catholic Church? Anyway, Bridget and Thomas have a son, William, in 1849. William Ireland married Eliza Mary Stephens in Kilkenny in 1873. In 1874 they had a daughter Emily Frances. The son, Frederick William's birth is not registered but Eliza died three days later in 1875. William, it appears, leaves Ireland and leaves the children behind. Wm. married Elizabeth Cole, daughter of Peter Cole and Elizabeth Sparling, from Tipperary, in the US in 1889. Wicklow and Kilkenny are next to each other. We have found no record of the three Kealy sisters being anywhere. Would Bridget, a servant, have gone to another county to be a servant? Thomas' death is noted in Kilkenny but Bridget's is not. Would she have gone back to family? Today we know that William's pallbearer was Samuel Cole Ireland. Samuel is brother to Thomas Cole Ireland both sons of Richard Ireland and Catherine (Cole). Those two are in the US in Connecticut by 1880. William appears on records in the later 1880's. Then William's children appear to be on a ship in late 1880's but they go to Renfrew Cty and their aunt Julia's. Can there have been movement between counties and even in Wexford? We found Bridget but not Julia or MaryAnn. If Samuel and Thomas Ireland of William's generation were in Tipperary why was William's father, Thomas, a plumber in Kilkenny? It appears that William was connected to Samuel and Thomas, both with the middle name of Cole (their mother Catherine was most likely a Cole) and William's second wife in the US is a Tipperary bride, Bessie Cole, sent over to him in Connecticut. I feel as if we are dancing around these families and just can't put them in order or place. Any thoughts or connections? I have asked before but I can't find anything based upon past suggestions. 3. My second trip into Ireland had me searching the YEW tree cemetery or was it the first, cant confirm that yet, but that aside I can tell you it was a graveyard that was known as the burial grounds for the Doyles, we crossed a newly sewn paddock of corn, and climbed over the fence ( I was young enough then and fit enough to climb fences mmmmm those were the days) and entered the graveyard, to be disappointed to find that headstones were being lost to time and general decay, and 23 years on I imagine time has done the rest But among my notes and confirmed by Cantwell is Erected by William Kidd in memory of his father Saml ( Sic) Kidd of Ballisland who departed this life the 8 June 1812 aged 72 years. Also here lieth the body of George brother of above William who died the > Feb 182? aged ?7 years and also is interred here. The remains of the said William Kidd who died the 9th July 1812 aged 60 years Seeing as I was in the area thought I would look at the name Kidd They are buried at Carnew George Kidd of Ballymoney in memory of his son Thomas Kidd who ded February 28th 1811 aged 16 years This Tomb was erected by Thomas Kidd in memory of his daughter Susanna Kidd who depd this life Jan 17th 1813 aged 14 years ALso his wife Susanna Kidd who depd this life Jan 9th 1824 aged 64 years Also the above named Thomas Kidd late of Askamorewho departed this life the 21st of March 1830 aged 100 ( *Great Age CL Noted) years and also his son Samuel Kidd who departed this life February the 8th 1853 aged 15 years Sacred to the memory of George Kidd late of Ballnaboy? wh odied August 1st 1825 aged 65 years also of his brother William Kidd who depd this life February the 7th 1829 aged 76 years And Judith Kidd sister of the above named George and William Kidd who died February 8th 1861 aged 65 years. Asssociated names Plummer in Kilrush with Kidd - Plummer is a name I am at the moment researching also. 1-Erected to the memory of William Plummer of Ballyranking who departed this life on the 12th day of May 1866 aged 51 years. AlsoJospeh Kidd died October 27th 1912 also his wife Mary Anne died May 20th 1936 *( was she nee Plummer?) 2- Sacred to the memory of Thomas Kidd Ballyrankin who died October 25th 1919 aged 67 years also his infant son Thomas who died May 3rd 1913. 3-Beneath this tomb are deposited the mortal remains of Joseph Kidd of Raheen in this parish who depd 28th November 1818 in the 81st Year of his age 4-In Memory of Elizabeth Kidd of Skeduff Co Carlow who died 29th Feb 1864 aged 43? years also of her husband George died March 186? aged 58 years and of their son John who died young 3-Eleanor kidd relict of the late John Kidd of Knockanree who departed this life 23rd Feb 1863 aged 9?0 years also his sister Margaret Kidd of Raheen who departed this life on the 11th day of Spetember 1869 aged 82. 3. I have returned to my first diary from my very first ever trip to Ireland, back then I was not researching, I was simply interested in History, any history, but as I am now re-reading these diaries I am finding things I wrote that would be of interest to people now researching in Co Wicklow. The year was 1988, and I was going to Ireland for the first time, having always loved Ireland, and having grown up with more Irish stories and folk lore than I have ever read on any of these lists, but a genuine love of Ireland. This holiday was to open for me a healing process ( having just lost an only son) and a deep and abiding love that has never to this day faded for Co Wicklow. Before this holiday was over I was hooked, into Irish history further than I had ever imagined, my love of anything to do with Charles Parnell had today only grown stonger, I gathered this last trip another book on this mans life. But I digress now as I want to share some things from these diaries, some have been share through time on this list but as I have grown and learnt more of Co Wicklow I have gathered family data, and added to it at times. The call for HALPIN-SHERWOOD -REVILL and of course BYRNE and BROWNRIGG have kept me busy through out the past few years, but it is time some of what I have gathered be put together and shared to see where this winding path will lead. Some of these notes appeared as the resarch on Fitzwilliams estate and tenants and a certain girl from the area ...who you will meet along the way if you have not already in my sharing of my notes etc. Please allow that I wrote what I saw and sometimes the spelling was poor to say the least. REVILL:- Newcastle of Teighlin? Leased to W Thomas Revell in the year 1825 at the yearly rent of Pounds....... ( no noted monies) An arrears of Pounds ( no money written in) accumulated and at Trinity Tern (Term), Habere was obtained and Profson ( Posession) was taken the 20th July 1849, Jas Jones was made the six month tenant and and for 281pounds9s3d. the 7th inst out of the farm which is some little more than a years rent and cost of ejectment Earl Fitzwilliam having taken Mr. Revells case into consideration, in consequence of the good report given of the industry and activity of his sons, Mr. Chaloner* ( Fitzwilliams Head man) intruded. R.L *(Ralph Lawrenson) to go down to Newcastle and have Mr. R. reinstated in his place on trial for one year ending the 25th March 1851 at 242 Pounds 16.s od. which was accordingly carried out by Jas Jones in the presence of R.L the 7th inst. Taken from MS4972 Ejectment Book 1845-1860 * (1988) REVILL Ardoyne:- Mr William Revell * being ejected at Trinity's term 1849 for bread of convenant and Habere Obtained- Profson * Taken from MS4972 Ejectment Book 1845-1860 * (1988) MS8815 Coolattin Papers which are accounts dealing with tenants especially William Sherwood and other papers in respect of the estates of Earl Fitzwilliam Coolattin Co Wicklow 1775-1825 Cheers Cara

    2. Cara, Your mention on April 11 about the ARIS names rang a bell, and I looked up some copies I had made from the "Index to the Public Records and State Papers of Ireland" (FHL film 1363995) some years ago. The reason I noted them is the frequency with which that name appears in my own family. In addition to the will for Martha Aris, as you mention, the index lists a will for Peter Aris, farmer, Blackditch, Co. Wicklow, in 1712; a note of Peter Aris, Merchant, Dublin, in 1734 [must not be the same Peter] who died intestate; an original will for Thomas Aris, Blackditch, in 1724; an original will for Thomas Aris, Blackditch, in 1746 [must be 2 different persons named Thomas]; a marriage license for Margaret Aris and Thomas Pigeon in 1727; and a marriage license for Martha Aris and Thomas Hamilton in 1736. This is just in my "miscellaneous" file but follows up on your thought. Cheers, Suzanne Revell message dated 4/11/2011 3:33:04 A.M. So therefore I am now asking what is the likelyhood of the Revell, Brass, Sherwood family having had in its forebears a woman namd ARIS Dublin Grant Book shows Martha Aris /Blackditch Co Wicklow 1746 ( widow ) most likely the widow of the gentleman below or of Thomas Aris of same parish 1724 and his will dated 1746 same address. Peter Aris a merchant of Dublin 1734 So the surname existed, whats the input to this then? Cheers Cara Peter Aris same address a farmer in 1712 (will) ------------------------------

    3. We have just added some great old photos from Old Delgany. Also a plaque with some history of the church. Thanks go to Joyce Tunstead for going there while the morning sun was shining on the stones at the right angle. It was worth it. The old stones are amazingly easy to read. To view the new photos go to: http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ Choose WICKLOW and then Headstones. Enjoy! Christina
