Rev. Thomas Greene didn't live in Spinans East. His residence was Greeneville (close to Spinans) and it's now called Kilranelagh House. His family were Dublin merchants who 'gentrified' themselves by renting part of the Trinity College estates in West Wicklow. They were minor gentry and landlords of the townlands in the immediate area of Kilranelagh. If you want to know more about them, see my article in the West Wicklow Historical Society Journal (issue No. 1 or 2 [I can't remember which]). Great quote. Anything more on the "Moderate clerical magistrates Revd Brownrigg", or any other Brownrigg?? Despite Bishop Brownrigg, most Brownriggs in the south were protestant. Hi Arlene I have 2 Vicars/Vickers you might be interested in : John Vickers was Baptized 25 June, 1831 in the R.C. Chapel in Glendalough. His parents were Timothy Vickers and Ann Roberts. The sponsors were James and Margaret Toole. also... Laurence Vickers was Baptized 25 October, 1835 in the same Church, having the same parents. The sponsors were Michael Toole and Mary Healey. I have a note - Killifin - which was probably the residence. The actual spelling in the handwritten records was Vicars, but for my own purposes, I changed it to Vickers, but my notes indicate it was written Vicars. Hope this helps, Peggy p.s. I have another Vickers family from Arklow (not very far away) - John and Sarah Toole. If you think there might be a connection, let me know.
Yes, poor old Thomas was piked to death after the Battle of Hacketstown. I know of the story from my ggg aunt's journal. She was Mary Jane Eager, and she was the gg grandaughter of Thomas Finlay (1740 - 1798). She wrote her journal in around 1976, just before she died. The story goes... ' My great grandfather, BILLY EAGER, (called Billy Britton- and I do not know why) was born in Kilcarney some time in the latter half of the 18th century. He was a Yeoman and fought for the Government against the rebels in the 1798 Rising. He was in the Battle of Hacketstown. Evidently, the Rectory was their Headquarters at that time. I believe the Rectors wife and daughter ran lead bullets to keep the rifles or blunderbusses supplied when the lead was finished. The men cut the brass buttons off their knee boots and any rebel that got a brass button into him didnt recover in a hurry. The Yeomen won the day and the Pike men had to retire. When the country had settled down after the Rebellion, Billy acquired a farm at Ballinafoyle which has been in the Eager family ever since. About the year 1806 he married Kate (probably Catherine) Finlay, Ballinabarney, daughter of a local farmer by whom he had six children 3 sons and 3 daughters. One set of twins (boys I think). Kates three brothers fought in the Battle of Hacketstown with Billy Eager. When the Pike men were defeated that day, some of them on their way home, to be of help in Dunlavin, met old Mr.Finlay at Ballinabarney Bridge he was on his way home from the hill where he had been seeing to his sheep during the absence of his two sons. He asked them how the day had gone he was anxious for news of his sons I suppose he met their spite after their defeat they murdered the old man on Ballinabarney Bridge and then went down to his house, turned out his three daughters (one of which was Kate, the girl Billy afterwards married when he acquired the farm at Ballinafoyle) and set the house on fire.' Pretty awful story, but I suppose it happened fairly frequently around those times. Does anybody know if this story has been published in a history book about Wicklow?
