    1. DEAR CARA
    2. Cara_Links
    3. Dear Cara Question As no one is utilising the list at the moment, I was wondering what you may be doing to brighten the days here on the list.? Answer Well I have been currently updating the Old Kilbride and New Kilbride Cemetery trancsriptions from scribblings I noted in 2003 and photos I took of the headstones, imagine my surprise when I found I have a few new ones after cross referencing with the Brian Cantwell details. for Old Kilbride. Question So now this work is nearing its completion what will you be doing with the data.? Answer Well my greatest desire was to post it onto a web site, where anyone can acess it-but being the dummy I am I have no idea how to build one, so will be possibly no promises posting them all in full to the Irish Tombstone list. Question So what then, is there more in the pipe line for you to continue to do? Answer Well yes there is I would like to finish transcribing some old news copy that I have to post to the list, I have now almost completed one of the Mine captains families of Avoca and that has proven to be very fulfilling, and indeed very interesting. Question What do you mean Mine captains? Answer Seven mine captains were attached to the Avoca Mines around the late 1800's and I have located two of them and built there family trees to the best of my ability, I would like to locate the other five, and have that on the fire cooking. A mine captain being the leader of a group of men. Question Were the mines of any great value to the area of Avoca. Answer Well like any work, be it mining or something else - of course was of value in its prime. But I think as mining began to fade, some of these miners drifted to the four corners of the world, and others turned their hand to farming. Question So Cara, why are you sitting her answering my questions, when I can see you have a million things, to do, and a list to aid and help. Answer Well because I would like to see more input to the list, is why I stopped to answer these questions, now get out of here you cheeky beggar, and lets see how many of these listers are fast enough to catch me in Old Kilbride, or indeed New Kilbride where the grasss is so soft you sink to your ankles and the graveyard is so neat, you could cry when you remember the state I first found Old kilbride and my beloved Castlemac in ............now thats another story, so you get on home to your ma and tell her she needs you. Cheers C

    2. Brian & Anona
    3. After re-reading a letter from Thomas Earl Jnr to family in NZ dated 1909 I recalled a large photo we had at home of a racehorse named "Author Dillon". The letter stated that the writer had just visited the old stables belonging to Harry Earl. Whether this horse and owner are connected I can't be sure. I have tried all the combinations i can think of to find any info but drawn a blank. Any suggestions gratefully received. Anona

    3. Morning Cara, Here in England "Ex directory " means that your phone number will not be entered into any phone directories, and if you enquire at "the Phone Co Directory Enquiries" they will not give you the phone number either. I am not sure if they still do but years ago they operator at Directories enquiries would contact the number and inform them that someone was trying to contact them by phone. Hope this helps Regards Peter P. 3. Sorry John I have no idea what Ex directory means we in Australia say silent number or in the telephone book. I guess this might be what you mean of course. And should you find a notice in the paper for him, make sure you post that to the Ireland Obit list, or should come across his headstone, post that to the Tombstone Ireland list or Cemetery list. I did indeed email him but that bounced, guess hes still off, chasing he belles of Dongal or is that the Bluebells of Donegal. I do know his phone has been engaged ( not to be married) for some evenings now or is that morning as himself has tried to make contact, but himself cleverley wiped all his phone numbers out, so have been trying to get the round one ( Cyril) to text his phone number to him------ They have a few cats perhaps that knocked the phone off the hook Ahh well hes like a bad penny he will arrive full of apologies and excuses, when he deems it fit enough to keep us all company here again. Back the hunt for the rellies --------NO NO NO not Newsomes.......wheww CARA

    3. Dear John I think that C Newsome has currently unsubbed from the list as he was off to Donegal for a wee jaunt with his mummy. And I guess he will lay claim to any Newsome be they from Timbuctoo, Back of Beyond or indeed Aughrim Ireland. I guess he will appear eventually back on the list, I have no idea why his email account is not working ( unless he has let that lapse as well) I know hes about saw him post something down the Wexford list, perhaps he may not be returning to Wicklow list, taken a longer break or something. Won the lotto and retired I simply do not know what he is up to, but I can tell you the list is quieter whiles hes away, there is no one to pick on me, comment at me, yes it is peaceful. But I think that will be the calm before the storm. Let me know if you dont make contact with him and I will see If I can rattle his cage Cheers CARA ----- Original Message ----- From: "John C. 1. Re: Avoca Question . . .
    2. Sorry Cara, As Daz mentioned in his post, he was most helpful to me. Unfortunately, we ended up passing several emails off list and didn't copy to the list. Daz also provides a wealth of knowledge concerning mining in Wicklow. His response pretty much covered everything. However, I'm still a little curious as to the true origin and age of the "gate." Just curious myself about such stuff. Now about those pheasants jumping into your pockets . . . Bob Thompson

    1. Re: [Wicklow] Avoca Question . . .
    2. Apparently it was the same gate-house that Bob had visited but I wasn't able to tell him very much about what he had missed apart from the fact it was a way of getting to the alleged second meetings of the water, a short distance downstream of which, by the way, there are increasing numbers of sea trout being caught and sightings of salmon (and not all of the mechanical type either). I could have told him about the abundance of nearly tame pheasants that seem to be trained to leap into the jacket pockets of innocent locals strolling through the woods at dusk, but Bob probably wouldn't have believed all that. I was able to point towards a couple of web sites that mentioned Ballyarthur and the Bayley family, I am sure that Bob as well as myself would be pleased to hear more information relating to this estate and its history. Sorry Cara for failing the duty of update and debriefing, CYRIL, CYRIL HELP, CYRIL she's picking on me!!!! regards Daz.

    3. Thanks Cara, I'll have to keep a look out, I cannot find him in the phone book so he must be ex-directory? I have also scanned the papers for a death notice but cannot find one. So he must still be alive? Anyone any clues? The Wexford list you say? I must have a look at that one although it holds nothing for me (I don't think).
