I need further information too about how to use the Griffith Valuation. I have several 'suspects' listed in the valuation, but how can I find out if they are related to me. In the complete listing does it give family members - or what would be the best way to proceed?

Hi all, After surfing the net for a few days, looking for any Rogans in County Wicklow, I've found at least one family listed in the Arklow christenings. Unfortunately, it only gives a half dozen names and year of birth. Can anyone tell me how I might be able to find details on these entries? My Ann Rogan isn't among the names, but I thought it might be worth following up on it. I've also been trying to find information about trade gilds in the area. Ann's father, Hugh, was a stonemason, so thought he might have been a member. Does anyone know of any particular areas of Wicklow, where stonemason's would have found work around the 1820's? As you can see, I'm trying every avenue I can think of! I found a Hugh Rogan listed in the Griffiths Valuation. I looks as if he was leasing land in Ballymanus, Kilpipe. Can I check this out any further? I'm finding these titillating little tidbits, but don't know what to do with them now. Thanks, Sharon
Spoke to my grandfather last week, got a bit more information on family. Anyone have any links/info on any of the following? Geo. Nicholas Wilson b1880 (eldest of 6) 2. Katie Wilson (m.Bourne) 3. Janie Wilson (m.Edward Lawrence)(d. in childbirth..daughter Amy) 4. Charlie Wilson (emigrated to Canada early 1900s) 5. Thomas Wilson (fought in WWI, living in Vancouver BC at time of death) 6. Willie (stayed in Wicklow, lived until 1980-1990s?...my grandfather said he passed away 7 or 8 yrs ago...) parents were Sara Ellen Willoughby and Wm Thomas (?) Wilson Sara's parents Nicholas and Jane Willoughby (there is a plaque with their names on it in the Moyne Church still) other line: Jane Adelaide Strahan (b. 1873 Macreddin) brothers: Albert Strahan (died at a young age 46?) Wm Thomas Strahan (b. 11Feb 1878 Macredddin, d. 1975)..never married parents were Ellen Plant and William Strahan (Ellen died following the birth of William in 1878) My cousin and family made a trip to Ireland this summer (stayed in Jigsaw Cottage in Moyne)...took some great pictures of family homes (one stone cottage in upper Driem barely standing!) Have a great day everyone! Deb
Its a shame when we see someone leave, and Anona it will be with a sad heart that I see you usub arrive here on my desktop, but while you may be leaving the list, I myself will still be researching the name Earl, and should the missing link arrive amongst this ongoing research, you will be the first to know of it, I am sorry that the mystery writer who wrote one lone email to me, giving me hope that we had at least touched on your family, nerver again answered any of my pleas, to write to you or myself, but one never knows maybe he had, computer problems and he may yet still drop a mail to us, heres hoping. I have a local man, hunting for the race horse, he feels they would not have been housed directly in the township of Arklow and indeed he even thinks they would have been closer to Redcross than to Arklow, so perhaps this horse may lead to a victory race as yet. Ahh Anona by the way, you havent topped the years in research yet, and without giving the old ladies age away I have been researching my Iirsh grandfather since I was 11 years of age, even if I just finished university yesterday, mmmm yes University of life, you never know when that missing link will appear. And I am sure somewhere there is the missing link even for you an I. Good luck and from time to time stop by and read the archives of Wicklow mails there may just be that clue in there for you to think about . Hello Ian, I sneaked a few days holidays and went over to Ireland, it turns out that Loch Garman (as he signs his mails) is in fact Co. Wexford in Irish! Believe it or not he was found in Wexford Library for me by a librarian sitting at a film reader with some Americans, I couldn't believe my luck! Spent 3 days with him and had a great time touring around with him and his other visitors. He has indeed got some Newsome information, and we are 2nd. cousins, his father and my g.father were brothers. Many thanks for your offer of help, but I see he has you also in his database. I will have to sit down now and study it all. Thanks again Ian, and to the list. Dear readers In the early 1980's I started an index of all stray marriages to be found in the Church of England and Roman Catholic records deposited in the Liverpool Record Office. I did this for almost 10 years and the index covers some 62,000 marriages. Not being able to access them for some years now due to the programme that they were typed in being DOS (double dutch to me) I have now, with help, been able to retrieve them and would like to start sharing the identifiable Wicklow ones with you. Please note that whilst there any many thousands of Irish marriages the exact place is not always identified but shown only as Ireland/Hibernia. Where at one time I could perform a search of the whole index for any particular name, this function is now unavailable to me. The majority of the writing was reasonably legible but please bear in mind that although I did my best at trying to decipher writing that was not so clear it would be wise for you, should any of them be of interest, to look at the original record if possible. I will give you all that is noted so cannot add any more information other than that supplied. Hi... I am researching the doyle fam from 1800-1850. Would appreciate any info and pics on glendalough and sevenchurches areas. Thanks! Brian
A Google search using the words Glendalough Wicklow will provide many links to web sites relating to the area and its general history, for example; _http://www.glendalough.connect.ie/pages/articles/articles.html_ (http://www.glendalough.connect.ie/pages/articles/articles.html) A few pics. and history, etc. some of the poems are particularly good, (well not that good really, but I do have a failing ego to support.........lol). The local lead mining of Glendalough, Glenmalure and Glendasan were fairly prominent areas of employment around the time period that you are interested in. I have a few photographs of the general area that I could mail on, not very good quality though.
Cece, What a great poem! We need one more often. Thanks for taking the time to send it. Maureen N
Oh dear I suggest that you enlighten the list of your requests, and shake the shamrocks and see if any of your ancestors appear. After 6 long generations Do Sheridan genes live in the mirror? And so dear Cara, List cheerleader and mom I hope my little poem today Wasn't taken as a bomb I love your wonderful humor And your funny, happy quick wit Don't give up on us Wicklow's We're not about to quit. Hello, while on holiday a few weeks ago, we called in to St. Peter's Church in Wicklow. It was absolutely pouring that day, so I was only able to make a note of a few grave stone inscriptions - really the ones with most relevance to me, but here they are to share.
