    3. Yes, she was Joyce Hilda HAWKINS, born 04/03/1906 and died 14/6/1987. She came to my husband's and my wedding in 1985 :-) all the way from Ireland. Joyce and John Lancelot were cousins of some degree as John's paternal grandmother was also a Hawkins, but I'm not sure of the link. This is one of the areas that I'd like to work on next. They are quite an interesting bunch as Joyce's mother was Hilda Nugent BANKES of Kingston Lacy (now National Trust) in Dorset, England and her (Joyce's) oldest brother was Admiral Sir Geoffrey Hawkins, who married Margaret Montagu-Douglas-Scott, the older sister of the recently deceased Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester. 3. Firstly thankyou all for your best wishes I must have overindulged in doing nothing ended up very ill, but now am on the mend. I cannot comfortably say that Colonel Ellis owned Seapark, but indeed he had a large property their in 1918 as a strike of farm Labourer's was called at the farm Of Col Leslie Ellis's property at Magheramore, a strike which was called because of the employment of non union labour and it lasted for 11 weeks. 3. Dear Sheila Oh brilliant, a link! > Robert is, I presume, one of your husband's ancestors.> Robert Francis Ellis was my husband's 2nd great grandfather, born 22/10/1822, dies 12/01/1899. He was the first of the family to settle at Magherymore(sp?) but not sure of exact date. >My great grandfather, John Hanley Cullen, (gardener) married Sarah >Plunket(t), daughter of Thomas (herder), and her residence was listed as >Seapark, Wicklow. Kate, would your research on your husband's history have >unearthed estate records naming the labourers and other staff? > One of my husband's cousins is workng for a shortwhile in Ireland and has taken the chance to do some research. I know that he has a copy of the 1901 census entries. Do you have some dates for Sarah and Thomas? Best wishes Kate in sunny, but decidedly chilly Devon, UK

    3. Dear Kate and Peter, Thank you both for the information on the former estate Maghery(a)more at Sea Park, including the website showing pics of what is now the Motherhouse of the Missionary Sisters of St. Columban. What a beautiful estate and grounds. I had noted the "Landowners in Wicklow 1876, part 3" lists a Robert F. Ellis, address Sea Park, owner of 1,197 acres. Robert is, I presume, one of your husband's ancestors. My great grandfather, John Hanley Cullen, (gardener) married Sarah Plunket(t), daughter of Thomas (herder), and her residence was listed as Seapark, Wicklow. John later worked as a gardener at an estate called Eastwood, near Newtownmountkennedy, but perhaps he had earlier worked at Magherymore. Kate, would your research on your husband's history have unearthed estate records naming the labourers and other staff? This gives me a bit of a push and a new direction to search for information on the Plunket(t) name, which, to date, has been scarce. Thank you again. Sheila Johnston London, Ontario CANADA <snip>I think that I'm right in saying that 'Seapark' or 'Sea Park' is the earlier name for 'Magherymore', a house and estate which belonged to the ELLIS and LESLIE-ELLIS family until 1956. At this time my husband's grandfather, John Lancelot Leslie-Ellis, sold the house to the Missionary Sisters of Columban. 3. Dear Cara A belated, thank you for the information about the Leslie and Ellis lines. I've had a quick look through (parental duties keep getting in the way) and recognised some of the names, including Robert Fancis Ellis, who I beleive was my husband's 2nd great grand-father. I am desperate to study the rest more carefully, so I think it'll be one of those nights when I stay up late. I'm very intrigued with this line as they appear to have been quite wealthy, unlike any of my own very humble ancestors. The question is, what happened to the money? The estate of Magherymore was only sold 50 years ago, to pay off debts. Do you have any link with these people yourself? I have had some very helpful advice on lines of investigation from a couple of other peolple on the list, so it was well worth asking. I'm always a little worried about joining new groups as some are far from friendly - certainly not the case on Wicklow! Right time to get the children off to bed for an early night so that I can look at these new people :-) Many thanks Kate in Devon, UK always seeking my RANNcestors ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cara_Links" <cracker@hotkey.net.au> To: <IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 10, 2005 10:39 AM Subject: [Wicklow] LESLIE-ELLIS, ELLIS and HAWKINS > This family is buried in the churchyard of Dunganstown Church of Ireland > and names of these people that have crossed my files are > 20th July 1867 Thomas Leslie (Widower) 60 Servant > married > Sarah Malone (nee Flynn) 60 > Grooms father Arthur LeslieLabourer > Brides father Mr Flynn Labourer > Witnessed by James Reilly and Jane McGurk > > Henry Terence Lancelot was born on 10/6/1941 and baptised on 19/7/1942 > parenst you know of course and his father was listed as a gentleman of > Magerymore > > Burials I have at Dunganstown are > Anne Leslie of Cullen /27 March 1862 aged 40 years wife of Thomas Leslie > died 25/3/1862 > > Thomas Leslie of Sheephill 24/12/1868 died aged 67 years and death date is > 26/8/1868 > > Francis Ellis of Seapark aged 23 but no date noted for burial > Robert Francis Ellis of Seapark 16/1/1899 aged 89 years > > I also have photos of Leslie Ellis grave at Dunganstown > > The Ellis name I have more on shows that these brothers did not come from > the area of Dunganstown .........as those above and I cannot find a link > to link them to the brothers. > > Cheers > Cara > > And could we stick to the front of the list on this ELLIS _LESLIE and > HAWKINS research as there are a few listers seeking similar names none > more so than myself

    2. Stephen Aiton
    3. Hello, I am new to this list. I am interested to know if anyone may have any information on two of my ancestors who migrated to Australia in 1840. They are Arthur King and Mary Ann Maria King (nee Thackaberry). The bounty records at the NSW Archives showed that Arthur King born 1820 and Mary King born 1818, arrived in Australia on August 14, 1840 on board the ‘Lady Clarke,’ from Arklow Co. Wicklow. Both are listed as Roman Catholic. Arthur’s father’s name was William King (a farmer) and his mother was Martha, with no maiden name given. Arthur was a farm labourer. Mary’s father’s name was Edward Thackaberry (a farmer), and her mother Martha, had no maiden name given. Mary was a farm servant.. I have no other information about them. Any information or leads as to where to search you be appreciated. Stephen Aiton (Austin, TX USA, originally from Canberra, ACT Australia).

    3. Hi All My great grandfather, William ELLIS, was born c. 1828. The only information that I have about his family is that his father was Robert, a Farmer. William was a schoolteacher. He married Sophia ELLIOTT in Church of Ireland, Rathdowney, Co. Laois (Queen's County) in 1853. They subsequently lived in Tipperary, Co. Sligo (Riverstown), Co. Wicklow (Shillelagh), Co. Louth (Dunany) and Co. Kilkenny (Gowran). Schoolteachers obviously moved around a lot in those days! I have traced most of the intervening ELLISes but haven't been able to get back beyond Robert ELLIS, the Farmer. I haven't linked any LESLIE-ELLISes with my family tree but have quite a few connections with Co. Wicklow (Shillelagh & Rathdrum), particularly the SPEARES family. Regards Brian Ellis Dun Laoghaire Co. Dublin -----Original Message----- From: Kate Burhouse [mailto:k.burhouse@ntlworld.com] Sent: 09 September 2005 13:50 To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: LESLIE-ELLIS, ELLIS and HAWKINS Dear Everyone I've been listening in for just over a week now and found the thread on styles of research very interesting. Whatever your view, there is no doubt that the Internet has made contacts between researchers of similar interests very much easier and that is what I most enjoy. It is so exciting to find that someone else has been researching exactly the same people and so wonderful to compare notes and ideas. So, I am hoping that someone will be reading this, with raised heart rate, because they too have links with the surnames listed above. The research that has bought me to this list is into my husband's family, LESLIE-ELLIS who lived at Magherymore near Wicklow until 1956. His grandparents were John Lancelot Leslie-Ellis, 1902-1961 and Joyce Hilda HAWKINS, 1906-1987. Prior to 1850s the surname was just ELLIS, so I'm interested in this surname too. I look forward to hearing from anyone with similar interests. Best wishes Kate Burhouse Exmouth, Devon Also seeking my RANNcestors!
