    3. Hello All, Two hundred years ago this coming February the last remnants of the 1798 Irish Rebellion & Robert Emmet's 1803 Rebellion arrived in Port Jackson, New South Wales, Australia on board the vessel "Tellicherry". Amongst the 1798 rebels were the five State Prisoners, Michael Dwyer John Mernagh, Arthur Devlin, Hugh Vesty Byrne and Martin Burke. These five were all Wicklow man. Starting last Friday week, I attended the annual 3 day Irish Seminar held at the former Redemptorist Monastery, Galong near Yass, New South Wales. The theme of the seminar was the Life & Times of Michael Dwyer and the Waverley cemetery monument in Sydney. It is my intention over the next few months to place photographs of this impressive monument on my web site. There also will be an explanation to the symbolism around this monument. I would also like to compile a list of books & articles on Michael Dwyer and the Wicklow Mountains area. For instance, I've noticed that Paul Gorry wrote an article in a West Wicklow journal around 1984 about Michael. 3. Hi Listers, Sorry about my last message wrongly entitled Re: Crossbridge, when it was all about the Jones family who did not live there. My Jones family were in Dublin so my message was supposed to go only to Inga but I clicked Reply. I had sent her a very long boring deed about her Jones /Paine marriage which was important to her alone, unless anyone else out there has Paine connections. If so, ask me and I’ll send it to you. Sorry once again. Betty. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Version: 7.0.344 / Virus Database: 267.12.6/151 - Release Date: 28/10/2005

    3. Hello Inga, I'm so glad I was able to help. If you have trouble understanding the deed, you are not alone. When I first started reading them, I found the abbreviations puzzling. One was "for a cons'n" meaning "for a consideration" which in turn meant that some money changed hands. Only it wasn't an apostrophe but a funny squiggly mark over the end or the middle of the word. Another obstacle to understanding the content was sometimes a referral to other covenants which were not written into the deed in question. The witnesses to a deed were often relatives but in this case I think they may have been staff of the firm of solicitors in Dublin, because the ages are given. Most of the deeds I read have been for my Brien family in Northern Ireland. A few had marriage settlements and I have never come across conditions protecting the wife in case of bankruptcy before. I think the townland called "Coolruss" in the deed is probably Coolross which is on the southern side of Tinahely, and not far west of the church. I have a friend who sent me copies of sketch maps he made in the Manuscript Room of the National Library in Dublin. They were of the Moland Survey in 1728. A long wedge shaped part of Fairwood became Gorteen, adjacent to "Tinahely, including Coolross". The other part of Fairwood became Boleybawn and Greenhall. Fairwood was close to the venue for the olden day fairs. Nowadays the County Show is still held there. I have just looked up my own records from the time I was looking at the Fitzwilliam estate books, MS 6082, Account of Residents & Occupiers .... Gurteen Fairwood: In 1839 William & Thomas Haskins were on 188 acres and Henry Dowse on 109 acres. Gurteen Fairwood: In 1848 the Haskins family were on 188 acres of which William occupied 117 acres. John Jones was on 109 acres. John Jones, 55 years, 102 acres, wife 52 years, 3 sons, 2 daughters, 1 female servant, Farmer. Gurteen Fairwood : In 1850 the details on John Jones were the same except the ages 57 and 54 respectively. For 1860 I have recorded the Haskins details but no Jones. I could have been in a hurry, near closing time? The name Jones may have been there but it is not in my notes for Gurteen Fairwood. I don't know why in 1848 John Jones was only farming 102 acres of his 109 acre lease. If the above John Jones is your Mary's father, he was about 41 in 1834,the year of the marriage, only just old enough to have a marriageable daughter? The children listed above as male and female are only those living on the Fitzwilliam Estate. My Jane Jones was born in Dublin in 1832. Her father was William Jones, cabinet maker. Because he was in trade in Dublin I was able to go to the Dublin City Archives. A helpful librarian there accessed the Freedom Rolls and sent me a computer printout of all the Jones names, because I was only in Dublin for that day. The three categories for admission interesting for genealogists are 1. by Service (completed an apprenticeship in one of the Trade Guilds of Dublin, to become a Free Citizen and able to vote) 2. By Birth, to sons and sometimes daughters of Free Citizens 3. By Marriage, to sons-in-law of Free Citizens. William Jones, joiner, admitted to the Freedom of Dublin in Easter 1789. William Jones, joiner, admitted by birth, Midsummer 1839 (my Jane's father?) Arthur Jones, joiner, admitted by birth, Midsummer 1835 From 1841 onward the records are more useful, giving the name & date of admission of the person from whom the right was derived. Richard Jones, cabinet maker, admitted 18 Oct 1841, by birth, son of William Jones, Easter 1789. Thomas Jones, cabinet maker, admitted 18 Nov 1842, by service, William Jones, Easter 1789 Arthur Jones, admitted 1856 by birth, grandson of William Jones, Easter 1789 There are a few more Jones names and I can sort of tie them together a bit from the addresses in the Dublin Directories. I have always thought it insignificant, the name Jones being quite common, that there was a John Jones living at Gurteen (Fairwood) on the Haskins' doorstep in 1848 and Jane Jones from Dublin married Thomas Haskins in 1856. There was a story that Thomas Haskins wanted to marry someone else, but he had to MARRY MONEY. The father of Mary in your deed was John Jones Esq. and seems to have been well heeled. The Jones family in Dublin had a well established business. It is possible we may find a connection. Perhaps the first William was a younger son and was given the chance to establish himself in Dublin, after that never looking back. 3. Hi Cara I am one of those searching WOLOHANs and similar. I have been thinking I should post to the list but have been a bit hectic, so you have prompted me. I am interested in any names such as WOLOHAN, WOOLAHAN, WOOLAGHAN, WOLLOGHAN, WOLLAGHAN etc and am putting all occurences of the name worldwide onto a database at Rootsweb. Ideally I would one day like to find the family of my gg grandmother Eliza WOOLAGHAN born Strabane, County Tyrone c 1834. I have joined the Wicklow list because there was a Hugh WOOLAGHAN, who was courtmartialled in 1798 who originally came from Middletown, Co Wicklow. There are also a few Hugh WOOLAGHANs who later appeared around Strabane in Co Tyrone, so I am wondering if its the same person, or descendants of him. I have not yet been able to work out where Middletown is in Co Wicklow. Can anyone help me there please? I am in the process of reading the book "The Rebellion in Wicklow 1798" by Ruan O'Donnell as it has several references to Hugh. It also has quite a good index, so I would be happy to do lookups for anyone if you provide me with a name. I'm not sure about that but if you go on to the Church of Ireland website his name may be there. Redcross is not far from Rathdrum. I have written to him in the past about my Burnes who are buried at Redcross but he was away on holiday the time I tried to see him (summer over there). 3. Hello Wicklow Listers, This is my first post to this list and concerns my g/g/g/father and his family. They arrived in South Australia on a vessel called NASHWAUK on 1855-05-14. They are: Alexander TOOLE Farm Labourer 48 Mary TOOLE - 48 Denis TOOLE Farm Labourer 17 Teresa TOOLE Cook 14 Margaret TOOLE Cook 22 Eliza TOOLE Farm Servant 21 Mary TOOLE Housemaid 19 All are shown as being "Selected" from Wicklow. I assume this was some form of assisted immigration. Mary died in 1862 and I can find no record of her husband Alexander or son Denis dying in any state of Australia, so it is possible one or both may have returned to Ireland. I would be pleased to hear from any other researchers who have come across these folk in their "travels". Regards, Brian DOWNIE Melbourne, Australia

    3. Hello All We (myself and my partner Dawn Valentine) am primarily researching the Valentine family tree. We have also found links to Prestages (Arklow way we believe) Masons of Calry and Roundwood and Northams (from where unsure but moved to Wales and had a son Jack (now in his 90's if still alive). The Valentines seem to have moved to East Wicklow (Roundwood) perhaps from West Wicklow (Glen of Imaal) area. The last link we have is a Thomas Valentine that "appears" in Diamond Hill in Roundwood (his son John married Rebecca Mason 7th March 1871). Johns daughter Mary Susan married a Mr Northam Johns son Joseph moved to South Africa Johns sister Martha married a George Prestage 15th March 1856 Johns sister Susan married a Thomas Cooke Wilson, 19th April 1864 (master of the poor house in Celbridge) Johns sister Charlotte married a Richard Codd 26th October 1876 Any information, pointers hints etc would be most appreciated.
