Some of you are new listers some of you are older listers and some of you are senior listers But I wonder if any of you recall the Pyramid Graveyard or Monument Graveyard which is located in what was once called monument lane, Arklow .................. well if I said Old Kilbride would that shake your memory.............It holds many names linked to the beginnigs of Arklow, and it laid in chest high nettles for such a long time and the stones were being removed, and taken to be made into tables etc. My first visit there to look for the Brass family, had me climbing trees, and buying camomile lotion for nettle stings, a long time after the visit there. I then took up the battle with the Wicklow council to save the Monument, along with others in the town, but I never gave up, along with the keeper of the graveyard Patrick Nagle we have cornered politicians, been given the brush off, and still gone back to battle, the keepers of the coins, today, I received a message............" we have WON" 28,000 euros has been allocated to the progect with more to be put in next year. Steeple jacks at present busy on a church in the town are to take a look at the monument This week, which is a Pyramid structure to see what needs doing, and we are hoping work will begin on it shortly, and along with the monument we are hoping they will repair the Howard Vault, another valuable piece of history being vandalised and left to ruin. The graveyard is now kept in a tidy state since Patrick took it over, but this has all been done with him out of pocket, but if you are looking for a stone in Old Kilbride hes your man to show you where it is, and he can tell you to the last stone how many stones lay there now. So this time We win one, so that is one down and one to go- gives me hope for the second one I would like to see looked after, although this is a graveyard alone and a ruined church none other than my beloved Castlemac, but I for one am happy to see this monument get the money spent upon it. Its a superb piece of Architect and although the graveyard held many stones, there are hardly any left there now, .......... Am I thrilled ..........well words dont describe it folks .........but I love it ~the keeper of the coins has had to part with some of them, makes you feel real warm all over ..........means that in time to come, you may all be able to see this monument in its pristine condition rather than a mass of rocks being taken over by the ivy. Cheers Cara
Congrats well done. God bless you and Patrick for all you have done. Hope to visit Ireland one day before too long and I will go looking for Old Kilbride and many other cemeteries and monuments in the area. Bravo, Cara, for all the patience and determination shown by you and Patrick Nagle to get back some respect and dignity for the old monument. Persistence does sometimes pay off. Congratulations. We have had similar stories in the newspapers about the vandalism and general neglect of some of our older cemeteries with pleas going out to families of those interred, and to the general public to maintain the property or to repair some of the broken stones. In one case recently, the stones had not been documented in any organized fashion and a well-meaning groundskeeper, in an effort to tidy things up a bit, had picked up the broken or fallen stones and placed them nice as you please against a nearby tree. As there were no surviving burial records for this old cemetery, there is now no way of knowing who is buried in what plot. Hi Ruth From Ruan O'Donnell's book "The Rebellion in Wicklow 1798" p.54 there is a reference to a Patrick Macken of Glencullen. "...The earliest reports of seditious meetings and transactions in Wicklow date from this period (summer of 1796), including one concerning a group 'supposed to be defenders' who met regularly at Maurice McCue's sheebeen at Curtlestown near Powerscourt. McCue, who had apparently been identified by Patrick Macken of Glencullen, was unmasked as the secretary of a United Irish society in 1798 which would have been amongst the first in Wicklow if the Curtlestown report was accurate..." To all list members: Thanks to Cara's prodding, and the responses from other listers that I got on my last inquiry, I did go to the local LDS library and they already had the particular film that was referenced on the IGI data sheet that I had. It now appears that I have been able to go back two more generations on my Sinnott/Sinnett family tree, and that Thomas, had at least two siblings. This is alway exciting I now have found a Family Group Record of Pierie Sinnott from Wicklow, married to Catherine Carty from Wexford on 15 Jul. 1791 at Arklow in Co. Wicklow. Pierie was C. 24 Nov.1763 in Arklow - ( could that names be of French/Norman derivation for Pierre ???) Children : 1. James Sinnott b. abt 1793 in Castletown, Wexford. 2. Thomas Sinnott b.abt 1796 " " 3. Ann Sinnott b. abt 1799 " " It also listed Pierie's parents as; James Sinnott* b. abt. 1737 in Castletown, Wexford married on 17 Jan. 1762 in Arklow. Wicklow to Ann Connor. James is buried in Kilkevan,Near Castletown,Wexford. * note the different date of birth............ Ann Connor: b. abt. 1741 in Ross,Wexford Co. I am now looking into additional data that I have found for Jane Kincade,Kincaid. that married My 2nd Grt Grandfather Thomas in N.B. Canada, Both Thomas and Jane migrated to Canada in 1821 and were married in 1825. They both were listed as being from "Wexford", but as Cara mentioned, the lines appear to get blurred when they are that close. Does anyone have an online copy of an ordinance map or similar map so I can get a grasp of the locales mentioned above. Many Thanks again too all............ Edd Sinnett in florida
I am looking for information about a Thomas Macken who married Elizabeth Leigh. I am new to researching in Wicklow, and would appreciate being told where to look for marriage records, and so on. I believe that they had seven children ... I don't know much about them but their names: Maria, William, Faulkner, Annie, Emily, Bessie and Louisa. I believe Annie was born about 1825. Thanks for any assistance anyone can give. Ruth Burkholder

The Clan O'Byrne, it is said, are descended from Heremon, a leader of a Spanish colony which established itself in Ireland about 1,000 B.C. The O'Byrnes and O'Tooles occupied large tracts of land in what is now County Kildare. They were driven into the mountains as a result of the Norman invasion. Okay.... I'm tired, ready to go to bed, but - ignoring good advice to wait until the next day when you have a gripe about something - I'm going to blunder ahead, and regret it in the morning. Maybe <gr>. Those who have dealt with me know that I always send a copy of my reply to both the list and the original sender (unless they request, in their original query, to reply only to the list). I do this for various reasons.....the person may be on digest format, and have to wait a day for the answer from the list. Or the requestor may be having Rootsweb mail problems. Or Rootsweb may be having its own problems (list 5 server). And there's another "very good reason", but I can't think of it right now <gr>. Anyway, I got one of those "if you want to contact me, you'll have to jump through the following hoops...... or else you can't talk to me" replies from the person who originated the above subject. I believe that Rootsweb has some sort of policy on this....but it probably applies only to rejected list mail. In any case, the above person is on "my list" now !!!! Now, it's off to bed. I agree with Viv: Watching the various posts on this thread, there has been very little activity on this list and Cara was responding gratefully for your post and trying to encourage other to do likewise. Earlier Cara had pointed out to me that there were many Sinnott's from Wicklow too. so I joined each list. Thanks to your many replies, on my last post re: my Sinnott line from Castletown,Wexford.
