I have one Saul Baptism.... John Saul Baptized 5 September, 1880, son of Henry Saul and Anne Lambert, residents of Tinaheely, Sponsors: Patrick Lambert and Esther Lambert (Father Protestant), Microfilm #6476, Co. of Wicklow in the Parish of Rathdrum. Peggy Leonard/NY
An ancestor of Thomas Saul & Martha Nee Manning is visiting Ireland from USA latter this year. He is wanting to talk to any Saul of his line. This not as simple as he first thought, for in 1958 the last Male member of the family in the British Isles died. A Memorial on the North wall of St Savior's church Reads: "In Memory of Joseph and Anne Saul and their daughter Hannah Mary. Members of a family who worshipped in and supported this church for at least four Generations. This tablet was erected by Thomas Alfred, the last Male member of the family in the British Isles. Ad 1800-1960" What he Needs is to find any of the female line of above. Can you help?
If anyone has Tighes or Mellons who were RC and lived in Carnew parish, Wicklow--right at the Wexford border (or over the border in Wexford), I'd be so grateful. What I have so far (both in Monaseed) is the baptism of John Tighe, s/o Patrick Tighe and Anne Mellon, in 1833; and that of Catherine Tighe (my ggmother) in 1835. In 1858, in Canada, Catherine married John Murphy from Parkmore, Carnew parish, Co. Wicklow. Catherine is, I believe, the Kitty Tigh who was godmother for Margaret Mullery (d/o Hugh Mullery and Judith Mellon) in Parkmore, in 1849. Thanks in advance...Anne
The above names were on the marriage cert. of John Shannon, Cty.Cavan, marred Catherine KEOGH at St.Mary's Cath. Sydney in 1867. Catherine KEOGH came to Australia with her brother John in 1862 on "Northumberland". Their brother Patrick came to Sydney on "British Trident" in 1861. There are many KEOGH's recorded in Australian records which I have seen and in GV they are shown as having properties in the Hollywood Area in Wicklow. Ann TOOMY, the mother of Catherine appears to have come toAustralia but without the marriage or death of Dermot KEOGH, showing the children of the marriage, Icant find out the KEOGH's who are part of Catherine"s family. Any information on the above names would be most appreciated. Shirley Parker

Thanks for your answer, David. I think I lodged most of that information, but I now have doubts about its authenticity. Mind you, that information about Patrick's place and date of birth were sent to me by a native of the Clogher area, who had very kind in checking for me in the Church records, for which I was very grateful. You would think that, in those days, it would be more likely that both parties to the marriage would come from the same place or close to. In response to Cara's invitation: Seeking info on James Kavanagh b. about 1830 in Wicklow (or Wexford or Carlow). He was in Chicago, Illinois, USA by 1863. Seeking info on his sibling Margaret Kavanagh b.1837 in Carlow, a Sister of Mercy in Rhode Island USA by 1862. Seeking info as to their parents, other siblings, etc. Their father's first name might have been either James, John or Charles. Thanks to the good people of this list, we have "found" James Kavanagh's wife, Margaret Byrne Kavanagh as one of a family who sailed from New Ross on April 15, 1851 to Quebec May 30th on ship Glenlyon: Patrick Byrne age 52 in 1851 (d.1867 Chicago, a "Native of Parish Hacketstown, County Wicklow, Ireland" to quote his headstone) Catherine Byrne Byrne Yes, a Byrne married a Byrne. Age 54 in 1851 (Have no information whatsoever after sailing. No grave.) Mary Byrne age 25 in 1851 (d.spinster 1896 buried Calvary Cemetery, EvanstonChicago) Michael Byrne age 22 in 1851 (Colorado miner 1880 Census) Elizabeth Byrne age 19 in 1851 (tutor to Colorado Governor' Evans' children, d."Eliza Marsh" 1889, buried Chicago) Margaret Byrne (Kavanagh) 16 in 1851 (married James Kavanagh in unknown year, 3 children survived, she died 1923 Chicago) Terence Byrne 12 in 1851 (Colorado miner 1880 Census) James and Margaret Byrne Kavanagh are my husband's ggrandparents. Since most of my own family research was done by cousins and given to me for the asking, I decided to try to research my husband's Irish family. It has been almost 4 years now. As you can see, we have had gratifying success thanks to this List. It has been frustrating to learn not one more thing about our Kavanaghs than we always knew. But, all in all it has been educational and rewarding and a lot of fun to learn from and laugh with the good people of the Wicklow List. Hello and Happy New Year, Cara and all. Sharon
Hi, am new to list but have been researching Wicklow ancestors for a year or two, and have been corresponding with a few listers, which has been very much appreciated. Am posting my interests in response to Cara's challenge for a new roll call. I am researching my great great great grandparents: Daniel Hunt 1795-1857 and Ann Groves c. 1795-1877 were married on January 11, 1820 (according to info from a family Bible). Ann was said to come from Wicklow, Daniel from Cork. They came to the Smith's Falls area of Ontario between 1830 and 1833. They lived in neighbouring Kitley township from at least 1839 to the end of their lives. Catherine Wright of the Wicklow Family History Centre searched the records of Clonmore Roman Catholic Parish last year for me and as well as C of I and other religious records. While she did not locate a marriage record, she did find find RC baptismal records for three children of Daniel Hunt and Ann Groves in the Clonmore registers, their residence was given as Aghold: Child: CATHERINE Father DANIEL HUNT HUNT Baptised 1821-07-04 Mother ANNE GROVES Godfather THOMAS MURPHY Religion RC Godmother MARY DAVIS Child ANNE Father ? HUNT HUNT Baptised 1828-04-27 Mother ANNE GROVES Godfather Religion RC Godmother ELLEN BYRNE Child JOHN Father DANIEL HUNT Baptised 1830-09-12 Mother ANNE GROVES Godfather PAT DOYLE Religion RC Godmother BETTY BYRNE RC Baptismal records were also found for three children born to a Michael and Ellen Hunt nee Butler also of Aghold, between 1824 and 1830. According to the marriage register of Clonmore R.C., Michael and Ellen were married on February 2nd, 1816, so it is likely that this couple had more children before 1824. Considering that RC Hunts were not common in the area and that Michael was of the same generation as Daniel Hunt (my great great great grandfather), it is possible that he and Michael were related. Interestingly, Daniel's second son, b. 1835 in Leeds Co. Ontario, was named Michael. The first son, John, was born in 1830 in Wicklow as you see above. Perhaps this was Ann Groves' father's first name? It is also possible that the marriage record from 1820 and those of the other children born in the 1820s in Ireland (Margaret Ann born Sept 26, 1823 and my great great grandmother Mary's Feb. 27, 1826 occurred elsewhere or are lost. One intriguing piece of information which I have yet to follow up was a search I did some time ago on the Co. Wexford Heritage and Genealogy Society web-site was the baptism of a Mary Hunt in 1826. I have no idea if this could be my Mary's, but Wexford as you know was very close to Aghold, Wicklow.) Interestingly (once again!) Barbara Dowling of this list shared this bit of info, about another Aghold Groves family of the era: garnered from the research of John O'Neill of Dublin from Church of Ireland records: JOHN and MARGARET GROVES > Known children : > 1. > MARY GROVES bapt. 10th March 1805 > 2. > ABARAHAM GROVES bapt. 23rd May 1794 > 3. > ANN GROVES bapt. 8th August 1799 (could be 1798 also as area is damaged). I am interested in the Ann, of course! Another piece of interesting news is that according to a shirt-tail cousin's notes, after Daniel Hunt's death in 1857, the George Code family (of Aghowle, Wicklow) provided housing for the widow Ann (Nancy) Groves Hunt in Kitley Ontario. She died in 1877. Until her death she was always described as an RC on census records. The Codes were a Protestant Wicklow (Aghold) family. Some Groves who came on the Peter Robinson ships in 1825 to a nearby area in Ontario were also Protestant. I am wondering if perhaps my Ann was baptised in the Church of Ireland but converted to Catholicism on marriage to Daniel Hunt in 1820. Is any one else researching the Groves of Aghold, the Hunts of Aghold, or the George Code (b. 1811)-Jane Johnston family of Kitley, Ontario that could perhaps shed some light on my quests? Many thanks in advance!
Hello Listers I had always thought that my 2xggrandfather, Patrick RATH, was born in Co Louth in 1797. However, a cousin of mine and his wife recently visited Ireland and tramped everywhere looking for Irish roots. They have recorded that Patrick was born c 1797 in Wicklow, IRL. His wife Margaret TUMBLY (also TOMBLEY, TUMALTY or HAMILTON) was b. c 1805 in Co. Louth. They married in IRL abt 1826/27 (Patrick was 29 when he married). They had two children: Mary b 1827 in Widnes, Derby England, Thomas b.1830 Lancashire, England, and John b. 1833 aboard ship coming to Australia. If anyone can give me any information of where to find the true information, I would be extremely grateful. Hi All I am now stating to help a friend that lives in Wicklow get their family sorted!!! They can get back to about 1850 when a John STINGER "appears" in Ballyloughlin (just north of Newcastle). There seem to be Stringers in Arklow and Gorey but they need to make their links. If you have any information ..... All the best Brendan . Dear All I have found a couple of very hekpful people in my searches for the VALENTINE family. I now have a very wide (and imcomplete) picture. I can get back to a James valentine who had at least 2 sons (Thomas and James born 1808 and 1809). He would seem to have lived in Rostyduff (Rustyduff, Rostiduff etc) and then Diamond Hill, his son James married Elizabeth Hanbidge and returned to Rostyduyy whil Thomas went on living in Diamond Hill and then Coolawinna. This Thomas was buied in Kiltegan so any leads might be there but from what I understand the Kiltegan records only exist back to 1845 and beside the Kilranelagh records are completely gone. Anyway on with the search in this new year Brendan . Brendan Dixon Computing Services, UCD, Belfield, Dublin 4 Ireland Vox:353 1 7162008 Fax:353 1 2837077
Hi all, Recently came to light in 20yr old correspondence with a family member, mention of the following record from the Kilavaney Church Baptismal Register; 2nd September 1822, Luke of Thomas Traynor and Mary Connors. This would knock over a brick wall for me if this could be confirmed and if the same records also showed Luke to have brothers Patrick (born about 1825) and Thomas (My G-grandfather, born about 1836). It would also mean that I have finally found my G-G-Grandparents to be Thomas Trainor and Mary Connors! I don't have access to these records, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards. Terry
Hi from Brisbane Gore was my mother's maiden name and her father and mother were": Herbert Gore m Rose Ryles in 1913 - his parents were: Frederick Gore and Helen Will m 1888 At this stage I do not know where Frederick came from, Helen came to Australia at the age of 18 as an assisted passage from Perth, Scotland.
