    3. Dear Charlene Shelton was the seat of the Lord Wicklow his home being Shelton Abbey which stood in the Shelton Demense I recall I sent the name BEATTIE to you and you dismissed them as not yours wrong spelling I apologise now if you are not the person I sent this data to .............further to this research I can now say quite clearly that although the name is spelt on their headstones as BEATTIE, they are indeed the BEATTY's of SHELTON. All be it that the headstone in Old Kilbride does have carved on it BEATTIE - but one must never close their eyes to the variables of ones name in Irish research. I have also cross referenced with the headstone to the burial book and this is what I have OK= Old Kilbride burial no167/Elenor BEATTY//Shelton16/11/1844 aged 66 buried OK by William Daly burial no 282/John BEATTY/Shelton 15/6/1848 aged 77 buried OKby William Daly burial no 549/Michael BEATTYof Ballinacor ( Living Parish of Inch) buried 22/1/186 aged 22 yrs 2 months buried at OKby William Daly burial no 665/John BEATTY of Ballinacorburied 28/5/1867aged 19 buried OKWilliam Daly headstone says says 18 registers says 19 * Died 26/5/1867 burial no 671/ John BEATTY of Ballinacor buried 19/8/1867aged 5 yearsburied OKby William Daly burial no 699/Michael BEATTYof Shelton Demense buried 31/8/1869 aged 43 buried OK by Rev Charles P O'Meara Curate of Arklow *Died the 18th August 1868 and it says on the headstone he was 54 and the register states 43 years of age ( I also wonder what the delay in burial was ?) Hope this helps in your search, as Shelton is indeed the area of where you will find Shelton Abbey on the Beech Road on the way to Avoca ....................I cannot read a map I leave that to the experts to give you map co-ordinants. ----- Original Message ----- From: <charw@sympatico.ca> To: <IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2006 3:55 AM Subject: [Wicklow] Shelton, Ireland - Help > Can anybody tell me where Shelton in Co. 3. part 2 Baltinglass 2/4/1799 A gang of seven were arraigned before a court martial assembled in Baltinglass. Ned Fitzhenry, John Perkyns, Pat Connor, Thomas Doyle, Ned Quinn, Thomas Coyle and John Condra, they had been charged with being rebels, possessing firearms and suspected of being with a gang of robbers who had infested the Counties of Wicklow and Kildare through out the whole winter. Captain William Reeves also noted as spelt (Ryves) the commanding officer of the Dunlavin Yeomen Cavalry and the local magistrate was the sole witness at this trial. Acting on information sent to him from General Dundas he arrested all those whose names were on the list. None surrendered arms but later their friends brought their arms in to him, he said. Reeves went on to state that he knew these men to be "of notorious bad character", especially Ned Fitzhenry and John Perkyns, who were rebel leaders, he said They were transported for life. Baltinglass 9/3/1799 James Comyns was charged with rebellion and robbery of the arms, ammunition and accoutrements of Michael Fenton, a member of the Dunlavin yeomanry. After taking these from Fenton he went into Hiding in the Wicklow Mountains. Michael Fenton was the sole witness at the trial. He informed the court that he of the Dunlavin Corps of Yeoman was billeted in Comy's house in October 1798. Comyns he said made of with his arms, ammunition, helmet, cartridge box, broad sword and regimental coat and waistcoat. There were 15 rounds of ammunition in the box he stated. Three weeks hence, he informed the court a party of Glengarry Fencibles had arrested Comyns near Hacketstown close to the Wicklow Carlow Border. Fenton identified his property as he had scratched his name on the equipment, and his name also appeared in the coat and waistcoat. Comyns had nothing to say for himself only that he had committed the theft when he had drunk too much whiskey The sentence was Death and it was approved by Lord Conwallis Baltinglass-13/4/1799 John Byrne faced a court martial charged with rebellion and carrying arms against his Majesty's Forces. A yeoman of Captains corps Joseph Hawkins, said that in October 1798 he went with a party of mounted yeomen to the Glen Imaal, where many houses had been burnt by rebels. He saw a party which included the prisoner, who he had known for a long time. Some shots were exchanged and the rebels escaped across the bogland, where the cavalry could not follow. Hawkins said that when the Glengarry Fencibles arrested Byrnes he recognized him as the man who had fired the shots at the yeomen in the Glen of Imaal. James Fenton the yeoman said that he was with the party which captured Byrne, which was commanded by Lieutenant Downy of the 89th Regiment. He corroborated the evidence of Hawkins. Laurence Doyle then gave evidence. He spoke of driving a cart of leather belonging to his master Fenton, a leather merchant in November of 1798. He met Byrne who said to him that he had no need of Leather but if the "rascally Orangeman", Fenton ever came his way. " He should sell leather no more!" John Byrne was pronounced guilty as charged and sentenced to death There was no reprieve. Source reel 620 (National Library Dublin ) (and Cara's office )

    1. THE AFTERMATH OF THE GREAT REBELLION-1
    2. Cara_Links
    3. The Aftermath of the Great Rebellion Court Martial in the Wicklow area, were all held some time after the rebellion. Baltinglass 6/4/1799 A court martial dealt with the activities of James Keogh, who was charged with rebellion and carrying arms. Sergeant Edward Connolly of the Dublin Militia stated to the court that he had gone to Gormanstown in Co Meath on the 30th March 1799 with a party of militiamen to search a house, because it had been reported that it was frequented by armed robbers. Two rushed out of the house of which one was James Keogh, armed with a blunderbuss, and a native of Wicklow. Throwing the weapon over the ditch, Keogh was then seized by the militiamen. Being a native of Wicklow he stood trial there and he was sentenced to death by Lord Cornwallis, but he mitigated this to service abroad in His Majecty's Forces. Baltinglass 19/2/1799 Michael Doyle was charged with rebellion, robbery and murder and his trail began on the above date in Baltinglass. The main evidence against him being a written statement made by James Whelan of Freynestown, which is north of Stratford-on-Slaney in Co Wicklow, close to the border of Carlow and Kildare, the evidence was presented to the court although the man Whelan had died before the court martial began. Whelan's evidence stated that on 22/12/1798 he had gone to James Hughes house at Ashford with John Riley and Michael Doyle, and that Doyle had hidden under his coat a gun and a bayonet which he was going to use to rob Farrel Doyle, Michael Doyle's reasons for doing this were that Farrel Doyle after the Battle of Stratford - Farrel Doyle had refused him lodging and food, so his motive was indeed vengeance. (Stratford actually fell into rebels' hands but a counter-attack drove them out and defeated them, thus they failed to gain even a grip on the territory western rim of the Co Wicklow Landmass, when these small garrisons held firm against their attacks.) Michael Doyle informed his two companions that Farrel Doyle had a large quantity of Bacon and even more food than that. His wife had three rings and a pair of silver buckles, he said . Michael Doyle then handed a pistol to Whelan, as he stated to enter the house and to say that he came from Captain Dwire ( Dwyer) to burn the houses of James Valentine and Patrick Prior. He told Whelan to say that he intended shooting him if he did "act like a stout fellow". Whelan stated that he refused to go and Doyle then stabbed him with a bayonet in anger. Whelan eventually entered the house and made his threats. Instead of the bacon and the rings and buckles, Farrel Doyle gave him a guinea, a half crown and few other coins. The case rambles on and on and finally Michael Doyle was condemmed to transportation for life.... Cheers Cara
