    1. Re: Knockanree Avoca mining
    2. Thanks Daz Ive emailed Florence Mine in Egremont Cumbria cos Dave Banks who is based there is the author of some of the posts re the 60 families who came to Cumbria from Avoca area 1860's. Strangely enough we visited the mine only last week and I left some info there but now i have this extra info maybe I will get lucky. I have contacted the "Cleator Moor" site over a year ago when the forum was working but no joy. Lets hope I get somewhere as I have a really good feeling that this could be the area of Wicklow my Niles were from (and its the only lead I have). Bye for now Carol

    2. Cyril's post reminded me of the words of a poem/song that I was given a few years ago, written by an unnamed Avoca miner sometime around the 1960's, his own version of The Tunnel Tigers, I thought perhaps it might just be of interest. (St Patrick refers to the 1960's name given to the mines) THE TUNNEL TIGER I took a trip to Avoca a year ago today I finished at the hostel there was no place else to stay They dressed me out in oilskins and a pair of rubber boots. There was only two ways to it boys, was work or get your books. Fair play to the Tunnel Tigers for they’re a jolly crew. They were Scottish, English, Polish and the lads from Ireland too. But Scottish, English, Polish we never gave a dam, We had to let St Patrick see the best of tunnel men. When the hard days work was over we went to the wet canteen, There was more tunnels driven there than Wimpey ever seen. They were driving through the floor, For Jelly Reek and air bags you could not see the door. Fair play to Tunnel Tigers for they’re a jolly crew. There was pat Mc Daid, Mc Calley and John & Frank Mc Hugh, The pride of all from Donegal and poor old Yorkie too. Fair play to tunnel tigers for they’re a jolly crew. When we went to The Meetings, we went there on the spree, The lasses gathered round us for they knew the drinks were free And when the money was all gone, there was nothing else to do, They said go home dear Paddies we have no more time for you. Now there was a man called Stephan with him we could not agree And before we leave Avoca I hope you wait and see That Pat McDade, McCalley and the two McHues and me Will leave the Polish so and so, hanging from a tree. Regards Daz

    3. Hi Carol, Many, many years ago I performed on stage in a concert with a group of Irish musicians called "The Johnstons". A "Fantastic" Irish Folk group they were, back in the late 60's early 70's. They had recorded a song called "The Tunnel Tigers by" Ewan Mc.Coll written in 1967. The opening lines were: "Hares run free on the Wicklow mountains, Wild geese fly and the foxes play; Sporting Wicklow boys are working, Driving a tunnel through the London clay. Chorus then went on: Up with the shields and jack it! Ram it! Drive a tunnel through the London clay. ©Stormking Music (1967) So all in all Carol it's not surprising at what they got up to. Ireland produced "Tunnel Tigers" from almost every County in Ireland, digging the London Underground, the Mersey Tunnel etc.. even the famous Chunnel (England-France Channel Tunnel under the Sea). It was a great skill to have when they emmigrated into the Goldfields of Africa, Opal mining in Australia and of course the coal fields worldwide. Even into the Salt mines of Cheshire! Wicklow in fact had/has the following mines: Owner Name of Mine Situation Agent Minerals worked Below Above Cronebane Mining Co., Tigroney Mine, Ovoca East Cronbane Ovoca Jas. Higgins Iron pyrites, cuperous pyrites, ochre 7 4 ditto West Cronbane ditto ditto ditto - - Electrolytic Copper Co. Ltd., 70 Lombard St., London Ballygahan ditto TP Phillips Iron pyrites and copper - - ditto Connary ditto ditto Copper ore - - ditto East Cronebane ditto ditto ditto 16 31 WH Pearson, Suffolk House, Cannon St., London Ballycapple Kilbride R Murray Iron ore - - Via Gellia Colour Co. Ltd., Matlock Bath, Derbyshire Ballymurtagh Ovoca WA Shetliff Ochre - 30 Mining was going strong in Avoca since the 18th. century although I think it has finished (commercially) now since around 1982. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman... ----- Original Message ----- From: <Carolgriff@aol.com> To: <IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 04, 2006 8:13 PM Subject: [Wicklow] Knockanree Upper Wicklow > Hi > > Im looking for info on Knockanree Upper in Co Wicklow and not finding too > much. 3. I have DENNISON'S in my family group also Reg, but so far I can only carry them from Co. Wexford during a skirmish in the 1798 uprising when they were driven from their home in North Wexford (I'm not really sure even, if in fact he is ours at all?). DENNISON in Wicklow? I have two: Daniel DENNISON living in Hospital Lane, Wicklow Town in the parish of Kilpoole James DENNISON living in the Townland of Cooldross (sic) Upper in the Parish of Newcastle Lower. Taken from Griffiths' 1848-64 and there are no other DENNISON'S listed in Co. Wicklow for this time. You could be in luck here? We could be after the same family in fact! Other names in my group include Garret DENNISON, Michael, John (died San Francisco), James (died South Africa abt 1900), Patrick, Mary (Molly, my g.grandmother) and Nicholas. slan Cyril Newsome Loch Garman ----- Original Message ----- From: "reggie duke" <reggieduke71@hotmail.com> To: <IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 04, 2006 8:17 PM Subject: [Wicklow] RE Is anybody there > Hi List > I am still looking for anything about my GGGrandmother Eliza DENNISON > who was born in Wicklow in 1842. > Reggie > > _________________________________________________________________ > The new MSN Search Toolbar now includes Desktop search! > http://join.msn.com/toolbar/overview > > > ==== IRL-WICKLOW Mailing List ==== > Visited the archives of late? > > ============================== > Search the US Census Collection. 3. hi, all: Looks as if there are some new listers, so I thought I'd relist what several of us are searching.... William BROWNRIGG (b. about 1787) and his wife Jane Morris (b. abt. 1787). They emigrated to Canada in about 1823....so we are looking for thier parents and other connections to BROWNRIGG or MORRIS families in Wicklow. Some info we have is that William was from Mullins, Kilcommon, County Wicklow (on his tombstone) thanks! m Mary Villalba AZTEC Communications 303-290-8415 Tele Distinguished Governor Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis International 2003-2004 "A global organization of volunteers, dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time." >From: Carolgriff@aol.com >Reply-To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com >To: IRL-WICKLOW-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [Wicklow] New lister-Niles family >Date: Thu, 4 May 2006 15:34:03 EDT > >Hi Cyril > >I just signed up to myirish ancestry and searched griffiths valuation and >found John Niles. 2. Hi Im looking for info on Knockanree Upper in Co Wicklow and not finding too much. Maybe this is where my Niles came from, you cant believe how excited Im getting! Im gathering the area was used for mining, does anyone know the timescales for this activity. Could this be why my Niles clan settled in Western Cumbria 1860's working in the iron ore mines. Could they have been miners in ireland? I obviously have a lot to learn as I didnt think there were mines in Ireland, I imagined Cumberland being totally alien to them, maybe it was really Little Ireland after all. I'm such a sucker for visual tactile things, that I know it would help me keep both the names and dates in the front of my brain.
