    2. David Griffiths
    3. Dear Carol You ask "were there separate naming patterns for Catholics?" That is a interesting question My GT GT Grandfather was from a family of church of Ireland members, yet he named his children in the Irish Naming pattern, continuing the pattern for second marriage, his brothers did not. check my home page http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/djgriff/ under Manning/ Will of William Wingrove Manning Regards Dave

    1. Griffiths Valuation Query- thanks
    2. Thanks to all who responded to my query re what type of house I could expect my family to have lived in as per griffiths valuation. I now understand the valuation a lot more, and realise eg offices can be anything from just that to piggeries/outbuildings etc. Carol

    1. Re: [Wicklow] JOHN CULLEN
    2. Hi Cara and listers I'm still here, too - hoping to find my gg grandparents' family. Is anyone researching WHITE or WHEATLEY/WHATELY ancestors? Hannah WHITE and William WHEATLEY/WHATELY married in Co WIcklow in 1833 and their children were Thomas, Elizabeth, Hannah, Alice, Catherine, William, George, Deborah and John (my great grandfather born in Kyle, Co Wicklow 1855) All the children emigrated to Canada and the US except for Deborah who married Benjamin HORAN at St. Peter's in Dublin on August 15, 1862. Their children were John, William, Thomas, Nicholas, Mary, Alice, Helena, Deborah, Elizabeth (Bessie) and Benjamin. The WHATELYS and HORANS were farmers and Church of Ireland. I see we have a new lister with HORAN in the email address - would love to hear from you and compare notes. Thanks everyone! 1. Griffiths Val in general
    2. Hi I only have 72 hours access to the Griffiths Val and intend downloading all John Donnellys in Wicklow also so I can hope to one day sort out who (if any) is mine. I'll probably also look at Shorts just in case. Is there anywhere I should be transcribing the pages I get for general reference or is this a no-no? Carol

    1. Griffiths Valuation description of Tenement query
    2. Hi Ive just obtained the John Niles entry on Griffiths Valuation that Cyril kindly pointed me to. Its in Upper Knockanree, Castlemacadam. The description is house and small garden which sounds as I would have expected. Many surrounding properties are house office and land. Has anyone any idea of the nature of thes tenements. I imagined rows of "miners" style cottages ( just like I live in now in Sunderland England) and not a mixture of dwelling types. It would be great if someone could "paint a picture" for me. Carol

My John Carty was born 1806 at Englishtown Rathvilly Co Wicklow, his father was Daniel Carty, John married Margaret Norton in 1836 and they migrated to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) with two children in 1839. He died there at Emu Bay in 1876 Have much more of his descendants but nothing of ancestors. If any of this makes sence please let me know. 1. Donnelly/Donley etc Short Cullen families anyone looking?
    2. Hi Thanks for all the info re my Niles queries, Im ploughing through articles and books suggested. Im also looking for info on my g grandmother Mary Donnelly who married Patrick Niles 1870 Frizington Cumberland. Mary came from Co Wicklow to Cumberland pre 1861 census The 1861census shows John Donley born circa 1829 Co Wicklow- Iron ore Miner Esther Donley born circa 1833 Co Wicklow Mary Donley born circa 1855 Co Wicklow Im thinking this is them Esther- and John -are family names. I am using IGI and am interested in a VERY LOOSE LINK a marriage between John Donnelly and Esther Short 04 SEP 1848 , , Ireland. I know it doesnt say Wicklow but hey, you have to start somewhere. I cant find a Donnelly birth with mam and dad John and Esther but Esther Short and her family look promising. I have found some Wicklow Short christenings- could this be Esther with her siblings? i know it would appear to make Esther very young when she married but I am not sure of the norm at this time in Ireland, and would the christening be done shortly after birth or could she have been a toddler. Patrick Short FEB 1833 , Wicklow, Ireland Esther Short 19 APR 1835 , Wicklow, Ireland John Short 18 FEB 1844 Wicklow Ireland Mary Short 27 DEC 1840 , Wicklow The parents of the above are all John and Esther Short. A marriage looks good. John Short and Esther Cullen 1829 Kilquade, Wicklow, Ireland If any of this rings any bells with anyone, please shout as Im really stuck with this family. By 1870 Mary Donnelly has married Patrick Niles, her mam Esther Donnelly died on Christmas Day 1869 and I cant pin down John Donnelly anywhere 1871 census. All in all not a lot to go on. Carol

    2. Hi Cara That is intereseting as Bridget is a family name and I wondered where it may have come from. The marriage also kind of fits in with the first known kid- Robert, and the 2nd known son was called patrick, I need to get those Irish naming patterns:) It also means that maybe the 1860 marriage is correct- always something to think about. Fancy from having nothing- I now have 2 John Niles to ponder. Thanks ever so much Carol
