Greystones -1910 Is a rapidly developing watering place in the Parish of Delgany, Barony and Union of Rathdown in the County Wicklow, five miles South of Bray and beautifully situated on the verge of the Irish Sea, with a station on the Dublin and South -Eastern Railway. It has almost trebled its population in twenty years, ad is still increasing, not only in numbers but in popularity, especially with the professional gentlemen and merchants of Dublin, and mainly owes it advancement to the energy and enterprise of the Greystones Improvement Association, or which Mr R.C. Dobbs, Esq., J.P. is the President, and Victor T. Price, Esq., B.A., Secretary and Treasurer. There is excellent Golf Links, where visitors are afforded the opportunity of playing at a nominal charge. It is also convenient centre for visiting the beautiful scenery abounding in the neighbourhood. There is excellent accommodation for visitors in hotels, boarding houses and furnished apartments, and farm-house may be taken at a comparatively small rental, furnished or in apartments. A new Free Library is being constructed from designs by an eminent local Architect, and funds provided by Mr Andrew Carnegie, of Skibo Castle, N.B. Golfers find a paradise at Greystones, as the links are about the best in Ireland. The population is about 900. It may be stated that the first slated house in Greystones was built by the grandfather of the present Harry Evans about 80 years ago POST OFICE:- Money Order, Telegraph Office, Savings bank, Annuities, Insurance:- Deliveries at 7.50, 11.20, 3.pm., and 7.45 p.m. William C Watson -Postmaster SCHOOLS Greystones National School (Mixed):- J J Hazlett, M.A., T.C.D., Principal Miss Gertrude Collins -Assistant Average Attendance -65 Black Lion School:- Taught by the Sisters of the Holy Faith Average Attendance-140 Primary Day Pension School founded 1906 Taught by the Sisters of the Holy Faith Private High School Taught by Miss Shepherd Greystones Improvement Society Association :- President:-R C Dobbs, Esq., J.P., Secretary and Treasurer:- Victor T Price Greystones Golf Club Secretary:- Victor T Price Constabulary:- Sergeant Barry and three constables CHURCHES The roman Catholic Church a cruciform structure situated in a very prominent position and presents a very imposing appearance, being remarkably well built with a handsome square tower about 80 feet high.. The first church built here about 40 years ago was of corrugated iron, and constructed at the expense of Mr. Boland, nephew of Dr. Donnelly, Titular Bishop of Canea and Coadjutor Bishop of Dublin, but was entirely destroyed during a violent storm in 1905. The present church was entirely by public subscription, and mainly though indefatigable energy of the present Parish priest, the Rev M. Flood. Adjoining the church is a commodious presbytery. ST PATRICK'S CHURCH GREYSTONES Greystones was, until about fifty years ago, part of the parish of Delgany. Mr Peter La Touche, of Bellevue, about that time left £4,000 for the purpose of building a church for Greystones, which formed an important and interesting part of his property. The church was built, and Greystones formed into a separate parish about 1857. Since Then there have been four or five incumbents, the last of whom, is now Lord Bishop of Clogher, Rt. Rev Maurice Day, who, with assistance of the late Dr. H Maunsell, and the hearty co-operation of he Vestry, placed the financial state of the parish on a sound basis. It was originally a fishing village, but has grown into a flourishing seaside watering-place and considerable town. The church has had to be enlarged four times t accommodate the increasing congregations in summer. Winter residents are greatly increasing too. The present Rector is Rev. E. S. Daunt, M.A., who has been incumbent since 1876. there are two services on Sunday, at 11.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. A Service on Wednesday, 3 p.m., and a service in school-house on Thursday evening at 8 p.m. The Protestants number about 600 GREYSTONES PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Was opened for public worship in June, 1887. Its first minister was the Rev. S Lundie. It was enlarged ten years later, and has now seating accommodation for about 200. this is taxed to its fullest during the summer months owing to the popularity of Greystones as a summer resort. The church owes its origins to the nergy of Rev. C. H. Irwin, now of London, and the generosity of the La Touche family.

    3. GLENDALOUGH 1910 With Seven Churches and Laragh. The Glen of the two Loughs, or, as it is generally known the Seven Churches, is one of the most remarkable districts in Ireland, not only for the beauty and intense variety of scenery, but for the ruins of ancient churches, abbeys and cathedrals, and a splendid sample of the Irish round tower, in perfect preservation, is situated in the Parish of Derryglossary and Barony of North Ballinacor, about eight miles from Rathdrum, through a delightfully interesting country. It was formerly the See of a Bishop, and still gives the name to the Dicoese of Glendalough ( Church of Ireland ). It is said to have been founded by St. Kevin in the 7th Century. Father Hogan, a local clergyman, gives an excellent compendium of its history in his guide, recently published: "he states that the history of Glendalough is the history of one man's life and its consequences." That man was St Kevin. He was born A.D. 498, and baptised by St Cronan. He was descended from the King of Leinster, and his name in Irish Signifies Fair Begotten. Driving from Rathdrum we probably pass through some of the original property possessed by St Kevin's Family, and somewhere near by was his ancestral home and birthplace. His father was Coemlugg, descended from Cucorb, King of Leinster, in the second century; His mother , Coemel, a daughter of Cemmandan, a chief of Dal Cormac. The story of St Kevin's connection with Glendalough begins where the tourist's journey ends. At the extreme end of the upper lake. To this spot, early in life, he fled his people, and all the churches and monasteries whose ruins we pass by the way grew from that lonely isolated stretch of beach situated at the further end of the lake in the innermost recesses of the mountains. The Danes plundered and sacked the Abbey in 830, and again in 977 the Danes of Dublin plundered the city and Abbey, in 1012 Glendalough was again burned. There is excellent trout fishing in both lakes, shooting, bathing etc. The hotels are quite up-to date and the charges extremely moderate. Car Hire is also reasonable. 3. DELGANY Porters Directory 1910 Is a delightful little village and large parish two miles east from Greystones Railway Station in the Barony and Union of Rathdown. Head- of a dispensary district. For upwards of two centuries the family of La Touche has been identified with this village, and it is without doubt one of the loveliest villages in Ireland and frequented by tourists from all parts of the world. There is an excellent hotel where good accommodation may be obtained at very reasonable charges. The Protestant Church was built in 1879 at the sole expense of the pious founder Peter La Touche, Esq., from design by the celebrated architect Whitmore Davis. Within the church are several monuments in commemoration of the La Touche family. The Carmelite Nuns have been established here for some time in a capacious building used as a Boarding School for young ladies. The Nuns have also charge of the Elementary Education of the Catholic children of the district, who are also taught needlework. In connection with the Convent is a Catholic Church. Population 210. Visitors in the district can spend a delightful afternoon inspecting Mr Pennick's Nursery Gardens, which posses unique specimens of rare flowering shrubs from all climes, and is generally considered to one of the sights in "the Garden Of Ireland ." It Contains a very fine marble cross dated 1794. Considerable improvements were made by Father Michael Murphy, who died in 1847, and again restored by another Father Michael Murphy in 1870. The present Parish Priest also made considerable improvements by providing new seating, new vestments, and redecoration of the altar, and a complete set of church plate, satorium &c. The Protestant Church is a neat, but small Gothic Structure, adjoining which, but quite separate structure, is a handsome campanile or spire and tower.
