Dear Carol, The Irish talk with such a beautiful accent, that when you listen to it on a daily base and you mention the Name Niel or Neill and you hear the accent say Niles, one wonders if it is a name on its own or a derivitative of the name Niels ( Neil) and you then must allow that all this indexing leaves you with a headache when you also realise that the man standing in front of you talking to the parish priest is saying JOHN NIELS and meaning possibly Neils, and the man hearing it is writing John NILE and then many moons on here comes the modern lassie or lad to transcribe the register with the name in it and they see variants of the name NILE< NIEL<NIELS and on it goes. One does take heart when they see your courage and fortitude in tackling this name, and admire the fact that you have never given in, never said die, keep it up girl, I so admire your courage to keep on keeping on. Cheers Cara
Hi. Since my name was O'Neill, I can't see any similarity between Niles and Neil, unless someone reversed the E and L. When I travel to Ireland, my father is always called "Dinny Nail" In the US, my mother's name was pronounced "Wee-dock", but in Ireland, it's "Way-dick". Thank you so very much Peggy!!!!! You are so kind. We'll try to use that to see if we can connect Patrick to our other Martin Family from earlier times Best wishes Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2008 1:27 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-WICKLOW] IRL-WICKLOW Digest, PATRICK MARTIN/ARKLOW > Hi Mary, > > In reply to your question about Patrick Martin, Clerk of the Petty > Sessions > in Arklow: > Patrick and his wife, Ellen lived at #10 Marlboro Terrace. > The 1901 Census for Arklow shows a daughter Ellen Martin, age 17, born in > Armagh, wife Ellen was 45 years old, a son James was 9 years old, a son > Joseph > was 6 years old, a daughter Josephine was 16 years old, and a daughter > Kathleen was 12 years old. > In 1911 Census, Patrick was 67 years old and a widower, born in Monaghan. > A > daughter, Mary A. aged 29 is also listed at that address. > In 1901, a Mabel Martin aged 25, is listed as living in #6 Marlboro > Terrace, > the wife of William, Church of Ireland. Hi Mary, In reply to your question about Patrick Martin, Clerk of the Petty Sessions in Arklow: Patrick and his wife, Ellen lived at #10 Marlboro Terrace. The 1901 Census for Arklow shows a daughter Ellen Martin, age 17, born in Armagh, wife Ellen was 45 years old, a son James was 9 years old, a son Joseph was 6 years old, a daughter Josephine was 16 years old, and a daughter Kathleen was 12 years old. In 1911 Census, Patrick was 67 years old and a widower, born in Monaghan. A daughter, Mary A. aged 29 is also listed at that address. In 1901, a Mabel Martin aged 25, is listed as living in #6 Marlboro Terrace, the wife of William, Church of Ireland. Her husband William was 25 yrs old and an explosives worker, probably at Kynocks Munitions. Hope there are some clues there for you, Peggy Leonard **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination. Dining, Movies, Events, News & more. Hi Barb. Have you looked at Cara's 1910 Postal info. I went through then all and found a dozen Dowlings, none in Arklow. Do you have any info on that specific time frame? Might you know where the 1901/10 Wicklow census can be found? Hallo everyone Can anyone tell me anything about Patrick Martin listed here as being Clerk to the magistrates of Arklow in 1910? I am interested in a family called Martin - one Bastable Martin born 1828 and his sister Diana and brother Arthur Martin left for London England in the 1840s but others may have stayed. Thanks Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cara_Links" <[email protected]> Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] Porters Directory 1910 -intro -ARKLOW ARKLOW Arklow is an important seaport market town ...... The town consists of one long street, known as Main Street, Upper Main Street and Lower Main Street, and on the northern side of t he River Ovoca is the Pleasant and interesting village of Ferry Bank. The portion of the town nearest the sea is principally occupied by fishermen and seamen, who seem to constitute a separate tribe such as is to be found in Claddagh near Galway. The exclusive owner of the town and surroundings was the late Lord Carrysfort, who has done a great deal of good service in many ways to the town, but is now the property of the heir of the estate, Colonel Probyn, (sic) but the castle remains the residence of the Countess of Carrysfort during her life. A magnificent statue to the memory of Father John Murphy, leader of the Insurgents, who fell in June 1798, in Carrara Marble, has been erected through the patriotic endeavours of the townsmen and sympathisers over the Three Kingdoms. Adjoining the police barracks are the remains of the old castle, said to have been built by a member of the Ormonde family over 700 years ago. For many years the prosperity of the town depended on the fishing industry, which is now gradually reviving, but the leading industry at the present time is the manufacture by Messrs. Kynoch, Ltd., of Witton Birmingham, of cordite, high explosives, gun cotton, and sulphuric aced, under the capable management of Mr George Smith. The ground covered by the works extend to nearly 300 acres, and upwards of 500 men, boys, and girls are employed, and ample sufficient measures are taken for their protection from accidents by the care and forethought of the management, who with their families live adjacent to the works, and are constantly in the "line of fire" if any accident occurs. Vessels of nearly 300 tons can safely use the harbour, which has been recently improved, and is under the control of representative body of Harbour Commissioners. A large number of boats are engaged in the coasting trade, and about 100 in herring and mackerel fishing. The brick works of Mr Alexander McGowan provide employment for about 50 men, and Parnell quarries, under the management of Mr Ward, about 100. There is an excellent hotel, Hoynes'. Population about 4,500. The Protestant Church of St Saviours is one of the most magnificent and beautiful in Ireland, and is a lasting monument to the piety and munificence of the Late earl of Carrysfort, who built and endowed this splendid edifice entirely at his own expense, from designs by the eminent ecclesiastical architect Sir A Blomfield, A.R.A. On June the 10th, 1897, the foundation stone was laid by Charlotte Countess of Carrysfort, and for two years the work of construction went on without intermission. No expense was spared by the Earl in securing the best possible material. The total cost of the Building was £29,000, to which was added an endowment fund of £10,000. The church was consecrated August 12th, 1899, by the Archbishop of Dublin. It has seating accommodation for about 550. The spire is 154 feet high, and the tower has a peal of eight bells, which weigh almost two tons. The style of the building is modern English. The utmost attention has been paid to every article of Church Furniture. The Stained glass windows are marvels of Artistic beauty. The Surroundings are beautiful beyond description, and it is not surprising that the clergy, church wardens, and vestry are so proud of their church. WICKLOW INTRO PORTERS DIRECTORY Wicklow is a maritime county bounded on the East by St. George's Channel, on the South by Wexford and a small intersection of Carlow, on the West by Kildare and Carlow, and on the North by South County Dublin. Its greatest breadth is about 29 miles and its greatest length 41. In extent and population it exactly equals the Isle of Man, but is much more fertile. It comprise 496,000 acres of land and 1,500 of water. It has a coastline of about 40 miles ( from Bray to Arklow), in many parts precipitous. Inland it is very mountainous, forming a considerable section of the South Eastern mountain chains of Ireland. Minerals of various kinds abound throughout the county- granite, mica-slate, clay slate, quartz rock, trap porphyry, copper, and lead. The principal manufacturers are the High explosives, cordite, sulphur, &c., of Messrs Kynoch, of Arklow and Birmingham; the Tigroney Copper and Sulphur Mines, Woollen Mills of Ovoca, Granite Quarries, where stone sets are made for the Dublin and other corporations; the works on the Dublin and Wicklow Manure Company; flour, corn, and saw mills, and the manufacture of chicken and pheasant food by Messrs. Taylor, of Tinahely. There are capacious harbours at Bray, Wicklow, and Arklow, where a considerable export and import trade is carried on. The scenery throughout the county is of surpassing beauty, and attracts visitors from all parts of the world. Mountain, lake, wood, and river abound on every side. Many of the most distinguished members of the nobility, clergy, gentry and professional classes reside in the county. Delicate shrubs that pine in other parts of Ireland flourish in Wicklow. In former times the Fisheries of Wicklow gave employment to a large number of people, but for a number of years the industry has not been prosperous. Signs, however, are now abundant that a change for the better may be shortly expected. There is an excellent service of trains between Dublin, Bray, and Greystones, but the Southern portion of the county is very much neglected by the Dublin and South Eastern Railway, which is a serious loss and inconvenience to the inhabitants of the district. The county has two representatives in Parliament. Ecclesiastically the county is comprised with the Diocese of Dublin, Glendalough, Ferns, Kildare and Leighlin and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ossory, Ferns, Kildare and Leighlin. The county comprises eight baronies- Arklow, Ballinacor, North Ballinacor, Ballinacor South, Newcastle, Rathdrum, Shillelagh Talbotstown lower , Talbotstown Upper. The population is 61,500, of which 49,000 are Catholics, 11,500 Episcopalians, 515 Presbyterian, 485 Methodist. Statue acres, 498,000, of which 91,000 are under crop; 250,000 grass;18,000 woods and plantations; bog 4,000; marsh, 11,000; barren mountain, 112,000. WICKLOW COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS:-Messrs. Ovoca 1910 Ovoca Village, with Castlemacadam, celebrated in song and story by the world- known lines of Tom Moore. *Sweet Vale of Ovoca* is a delightful little village in the Parish of Castlemacadam, about five miles south of Rathdrum, on the Dublin and South Eastern Railway, and about the same distance from Arklow. The meetings of the rivers Avonbeg and Avonmore, constitute the meetings of the waters. In the neighbourhood is to be found the most exquisite scenery in the world. The bird's eye view even from the passing train afford glimpses of the most charming description, but a walk or a cycle ride through this lovely valley can be better imagined than described. There is a copper and sulphur mine in the valley, and two woollen mills, giving considerable employment, and a fair is held on the second last Wednesday in each month and markets on Wednesday.
