Hi Folks Seasons greetings to all I have included three counties as it appears many enquiries relate to these three and a huge amount of Volunteer work has been done for these three counties and for all the other counties in Ireland . In order to have an appreciation of what we are about as 'listers' it might be helpful to have a look at the Rootsweb.com website to understand the purpose. It states " The Primary Purpose & Function of Rootsweb.com is to connect people so they can help each other and share genealogical research " Also..... Volunteer: RootsWeb hosts many of the largest volunteer genealogy projects on the Internet. Volunteers locate, transcribe, and publish genealogical data and help new users. Through this work they meet other genealogists with similar interests. You will find a listing of some volunteer efforts on RootsWeb's main page and in our website registry. Your own interests may lead you to others." So it is a 'give' & 'take' situation where we are expected to share our research with others who are searching and especially new searchers to give them direction and guidance. There are many listers who do this. But it seems others have an expectancy . We all have acquired knowledge and sklls built up over the years of painstaking research so we must not 'hide our light under a bushel' . I am just an ordinary 'lister' and I am most grateful for the resource(s) provided by all the volunteers who spend much time recording text and photos of headstones from graveyards and cemeteries and also helping with geography, place names etc. . Looking forward to much exchange over the next year and well into the future and hope we can all help each other in the process. Cheers ..........Golding

I hope everyone made "rather merry" this Christmas. We have a couple of Wicklow additions. First, we have added the rest of "part 4" of the headstones for Rathnew Cemetery. That brings us up to 600 with part 5 in the works. This addition is from Joyce Tunstead. These are under -- Wicklow-Headstones. Secondly, from Anna Ryan, we have some transcriptions from Saint Kevins Cemetery, Glendalough. These can be found under -- Wicklow-Cemetery. Best wishes, Christina http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/
Well Cara Another Xmas gone and your message re newbie's should be taken as an example to all. I had a rather unpleasant time on joining a new list recently. I asked for help and received superior patronising replies from a couple of the more "research educated" folk who suggested I research a bit more before asking questions, the answers I was seeking were already available on the internet. Was told I couldn't expect others to do my research for me. Boy, didn't I let them have it. Ended up with a couple of list members being chucked off the list. I survived and some of the more helpful people were kind enough to aid me in the new geographical area that I found myself . Some of the info I received was gladly received an ended up with some quality results and some good links to start me on my way. If I hadn't been a bit experienced in researching in general, that attitude I encountered would probably have discouraged me from joining any list in the future having had such an unhelpful brush with some ""superior""" beings! May have stopped a fulfilling hobby before it really started. It costs nothing to be polite, friendly and helpful. It is fun to watch the development of new researchers and share their excitement when they fell a brick wall. The friendships we on a good list make are special. We should never forget that we were all there once! Now Cara, comes to me that you have been slacking off...again!! I suppose it got you out of cooking Xmas dinner???? Hope you continue to recover so you can keep making sure we all toe the line. Be in touch soon. regards & best wishes for a much better year coming up. Gosh it will be 2009, I'm just getting used to writing 2008. Emotions on whether Holly and Ivy is a pest I may point out that Holly belongs in the North and where would the animal life be without it - hedges are now not cut to save the Holly and the bird life, and although I saw nothing wrong with the comments about it in Australia - as it is viewed differently down here I can indeed understand those folk sent here not of their own volition bringing with them parts of the old land. So if you prefer roundup to Holly I do wonder which is the more toxic really. But each to his own I believe Ivy to be a right pain but found in the end that containing it when it invaded my garden easier than poison so I also have a thought on both in Australia My thoughts were on Irish Custom and remains the same wish I had some Holly to put in my house this year. Now in regard to reading the current mails I am trying to catch up on I want to add a note to this mail saying, good folk who have never joined a list before will be doing so in the coming days, they will have a new Computer for Christmas, and they will be new at using it, they will ask questions that to you will seem easy, and they will make mistakes that you will see as easy, but remember this, where they are now you were once yourself. So emotions do not show on emails, curtesy and good manners do so when a newbie joins us, lets just show we have those wonderful manners and exercise them at all times. Thats it I am now off back to the couch to rest me ( or as the family says Queen it ) Love to all Cara
Wicklow Listers, I have decided it is time to tell why Cara has slowed a little in the past few months it is a bit like telling you all after the fact, but I do not do this to stop you writing to me but to ask you all for patience. I dont want sympathy or good wishes i know they are there for the asking. In the last four months I have had to spend several times in ICU, and none later than the past week, so of cousrse answers from me become slow, and then I get worried you are all thinking I am ignoring you all and I am not. So for those of you thinking I am getting old and slow ( you are right ) I am not says my other postive side. So I have decided to tell you all although sometimes I am very quiet ( be thankful for that ) I am actually still minding the list, and resting - reading none more so than the Irish records that I have here and looking and looking for those lost rellies. So in time answers will appear- and I will be getting better not worse. Cheers and have a nice day Christmas Day Australia 2008

Pam, you should live in Marvellous Melbourne, Australia. My wife and I are just home from Christmas Eve Mass and it's a glorious starlit evening, not a cloud to be seen just brilliant clear skies with stars twinkling magically high above. I reckon if you sat there looking up at the heavens with a glass (or two), maybe a Wee Dram would help, in no time you'd see Santa Claus sweeping across the sky. Merry Christmas to you and all, James. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: 24 December 2008 01:14 To: [email protected] Subject: [IRL-WICKLOW] Merry Christmas Merry Christmas to All, especially the Southern hemisphere, as its Christmas eve today, Many thanks to the Group, especially Cara and Joyce, for sending me information on my Hepenstall's. Thank you Paul for the voice of reason. Most of us have a hard enough time understanding the travesties of poverty, global warming, homelessness, genocide and war in our own time, never mind those of our ancestors. Let us pray that our descendants will find reasons to be proud of us, and to forgive our mistakes. I just have to comment. This is a quote from an earlier post from someone on the subject: <<The change to the Irish custom of leaving land to the eldest son, which was disallowed in the Penal Laws, was forced on the Irish under the belief that within three generations no Irish Catholic would have enough land on which to grow enough food to sustain a family and thereby provide an end of all these troublesome Irishmen. How Christian is that?>> Leaving the property to the eldest son, through the custom of primogeniture, was introduced into Ireland from England. This was a custom. It didn't prevent an individual from making personal choices as to the disposal of his property. He could leave it to any of his children if he so wished. The tradition in Ireland before this was a form of gavelkind, by which land was divided between all the sons. During the Penal Laws gavelkind was imposed on Roman Catholics of property (not poor people) in a successful attempt to reduce Catholic ownership of land. After the Penal Laws had been dismantled the custom of gavelkind was very often pursued by Catholic tenant farmers (under no obligation from anyone) in a long period of rising population. It was this that led to large scale subdivision and contributed in no small way to over dependence on the potato. As for new laws in the post-Revolutionary USA, I can't comment except to say that if its citizens were living under English laws before the Revolution they already had the right to leave property to any of their children. Attributing blame to people in the past cannot be done with any great precision. Hindsight is not something they benefited from, nor did they experience subsequent historical developments that might have enlightened their thought process. We cannot judge people from the past by standards of today. People (and whole populations) were often guided or misguided by narrow ideologies and fear of others. I don't believe that we are properly equipped to condemn any set of people from the past. I believe that in general they were doing what they thought was right. We, on the other hand, have the benefit of hindsight, knowledge of subsequent developments and in most cases an enlightened educational system. We should be slow to judge. Remember, hopefully there are generations to come, and they will wonder what made people of the first decade of the twenty-first century support narrow ideologies and inflict misery and distruction on their fellow man. Life's not that simple, is it? This has worked out very well in the U.S. as everyone knows.
