    3. Hi Golding,   Sure, I would love to.  Just to make sure you will be able to open and use it, I need to know if you have Microsoft Excell in your computer.  If you do not have it, it will not open.  My setp son tried for days to open it and finally called long distance to ask why he could not open it.  I had forgotten to ask if he had Excel on his personal lap top, It turned out he did not so I told him to forward it to his computer in the office and he could use it.   Just tell me which Surnames you are researching so I can name each database.  Also, what other type databadse would you need?  witness and Godparents?  Ship Lists Checked?  Are you researching Ireland only, and if so, which counties are you researching in?  I check for Darcy, Moran, and Walsh in all Counties in Ireland.   Joseph --- On Tue, 2/3/09, GOLDING KIDD <[email protected]> wrote: From: GOLDING KIDD <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [IRL-WICKLOW] data base for witnesses To: [email protected] Date: Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 5:22 AM Hi Joseph That sounds a great idea - it's probably quite a simple exercise when set up & ok if a computer wizard ! however for the novice it can be 'stresful' ! My wife's forebear was with the military for many years during the 1830s to 1850s, travelling the world of English conflict, so to speak. He married a Cork lassie, and from the birthplaces of their extensive progeny, I reckon his wife travelled to many of the theatres he served in. They settled after his military retirement to Woodend outside Melbourne Australia. Frank Whillans, Melbourne

    3. Thanks to all who have shared their thoughts on witnesses. Ive found in UK research that from 1860s marriage certs showng witnesses have been the source of knocking down many a brick wall. Before that it seems people didnt have the luxury of attending weddings and often parish officials were used. Saying that sometimes you do get lucky. A database seems a great idea- I currently re read my certs every now and again hoping I will spot something that means more- not the best way of dong things. Carol

    3. Hi Thanks to all for sharng their experiences of people having kids all over the world due to army. I watched BBC1 who do you thnk you are(uk) last night - Rory Bremner- it explained how up to 1854 the army allowed wives and families to travel with them. On the day the army was due to set sail there would be a lottery and those picked would travel. The wives would work in the army camps, washing cooking etc. I always thought it was only officers etc who took wives with them and never imagined wives of privates would be there, having a pretty tough time by the sounds of it. Carol- off to check out the Indiaman site and to learn more of Spike Milligan and John Sullivan the boxer.

    3. It is most definitely true that Irish members of the British military served in India and had their families with them, perhaps one of the most famous examples being the 'madcap'  comedian Spike Milligan, born in India of Irish parents whilst his father was serving in the British army there. (1919 I think). As many know I'm not particularly knowledgeable about 'things genealogical' but for other reasons I have used this web site (link below), not having used it as a genealogy resource I am merely pointing out that it exists, hoping it may be of use to someone.   http://www.indiaman.com/

    3. Carol, This happened in a Scottish family I research. Both Scots, he in the army posted to India, she on a hiking holiday in India they met there and married in Calcutta, had three kids there, each in a different place, he was posted back to the Highlands in Scotland, they had one more child there. Was fun researching the family. Was lucky that the lady concerned was one who kept photos and data. So, the answer to your question is, yes. And it probably happened all the time. 3. I am big on databases.  When I first started doing genealogy, it became apparent that I would be collecting a lot of information on paper, and in most instances,  it would be from sources that I would need to copy from.  Since I would not be able to make a copy of every source document, I would need a way to retain the information.   While in some instances I would need to retain a copy of an original document, it was going to become impossible to retain all of the paper and keep it organized and easily accessible for reviewing, especially since I was looking at so many names and did not know which was an ancestor or one of their relatives.  That is when I decided upon a database in Excel so I could keep information on everyone with that particular surname.   Also, one can sort the columns any way that was needed.   I have a database for each surname I am researching.  I keep them sorted alphabetically by name and then date.  My columns across are Surname, given name, County in Ireland, date of event, the event ( d. age 60, b. or bapt, in St. Patrick’s, godparents name, etc.) and the source of the information.  Due to the fact that I was collecting so much information on the name Darcy, I changed that particular database to be divided by County, alphabetically, then listed the information across in columns.  Since it is in Excel, it is easy to add another row in a particular county when I find another record.  One of the things I like about using Excel, I can place a border around each family and make it easier to scan when looking for a particular family.    Besides the surnames, and lists of witnesses, I have one for all of the ships I have checked to date for my ancestors coming over, and one that lists grandparents, g. grand parents, 2nd g. grandparents, 3rd, etc. all the way up to my 14th g. grandparents.   Keeping records in order is always a work in progress.  It is necessary so that info can be accessed quickly.  I get irritated with myself if I waste time on something that I already have in my computer.   Joseph --- On Mon, 2/2/09, Mary Villalba <[email protected]> wrote: From: Mary Villalba <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [IRL-WICKLOW] data base for witnesses To: [email protected] Date: Monday, February 2, 2009, 7:12 PM Ah, ha! 3. I am glad you asked this question.  I recently made a special database in Excel for witnesses to marriages and godparents at baptisms, to get a handle on finding out whom these people were and if they were related.  .   At this point it only created more questions about these individuals. One that got my attention was Catherine Mahar. She was a witness to the marriage of my g. grandparents, John Darcy of Co Clare and Mary Moran of Co Kildare, at Notre Dame in Montreal, Quebec, in April 1853. Her name appeared again in April 1855 as godmother to their son, Patrick, when he was baptized in Boston, Mass. I have yet been able to find out who she was.  There was a Catherine Mahar listed in Griffiths Evaluation in Co Kildare near Mary's father, John Moran, years earlier, but I doubt if it was here.  She must have stayed in Boston, as her name never appeared again after they moved to Texas in 1859.   The only surname that appeared in the list that was the same as one in my lineage was Moran.  Margaret and Michael Moran were listed as godparents of John and Mary's first child, Margaret, who was baptized at Notre Dame in Montreal in 1853. Mary Moran Darcy did not have a sibling named Michael, so I am wondering if he was a cousin, or, was this just someone they knew in Montreal who was of Irish origin and had the same surname as Mary’s maiden name.   .   I called it the "relation to the mysterious witness."   Joseph Sealy, Texas  ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Villalba" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 31, 2009 4:29 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-WICKLOW] relation to witnesses I would love to know what experience others have had in connecting witnesses with the marriage couple? 1. Re: [IRL-WICKLOW] Marriage witnesses

    3. Hi Carol and others, I have found when researching English parish marriage registers that it depended on the time frame as to whether witnesses were known to the couple or were simply what I refer to as "recurring witnesses", those being people who were affiliated with the church in some role and acted as witnesses on any given day. For instance, in the period of time where marriages were restricted to certain churches (ie Manchester Cathedral), vs the small parish churches, many, many marriages were carried each day and in that case, you would see the same witnesses on each entry for that day. When marriages were allowed again to be done in the parishes, it seemed that, in general, friends or family members signed as witnesses, however, this was not always the case. You would really need to see the registers for one or more days in sequence to tell whether they were likely known to the couple or were paid to act as "recurring" witnesses. That is difficult to do when ordering marriage certificates from the record offices because you only have the one document to compare. <snip> Good luck, Sheila J London, ON CANADA __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? Im lookng at a PatrIck Sullivan labourer born Bray crca 1801 who was in the army 1824-1839, serving some time in East Indies and some at home. Is it possble that a private in the army would have wife and kids abroad and then on discharging/returning home bring them with him? Pure speculation on this but looking at IGI and census returns for eg Sullivans there seems to be a lot born in India. Equally I suppose it could account for small familes in Ireland if dad was serving abroad leaving mam and any kds n Ireland. Its making me wonder whether this could be a common occurance. carol
