Thank you to all the lovely people on this list who gave us ideas on what to see and do in Thank you to all the very kind people on this list who made recommendations for our recent trip to Wexford. We had a great time and wondered why it took us so long to get to Ireland which we should have visited years ago. We received a very warm welcome wherever we went and enjoyed our time in Clare, Galway and Wexford immensely. Cyril's suggestion of a visit to Wexford Library was particularly fruitful. The library staff are wonderful, extremely helpful and patient with novice researchers. The staff introduced me to Des Waters, a member of the public doing research in the library, who immediately helped me and retrieved my GG Grandfather Daniel KERWAN/ KERVAN/ KIRWAN?full RIC records from Dublin and emailed them to me the next day. The library has so much research material on microfilm, it is well worth a visit.?The library sell a book called 'Between the place and parish', compiled by Celestine Rafferty,?published by Wexford County council public library service. This is a guide to the historical administrative divisions of County Wexford, it makes finding townlands and parishes much easier. Of course, for those lucky people who have access to this book in their public library there is no need to buy it, but for those of us who don't, it does help. The Wexford?library is open until 1 o'clock on Sat! urday and closed all day Monday. I found a series of books by Nicholas Furlong called 'County Wexford in the rare ol' times'. These books are mainly photographic images of old Wexford and give a clear image as to how our ancestors lived. Unfortunately, Volumes 1-3, the earliest photos are out of print and only Volume 4 is available to buy. It would be very good if the publishers reprinted the earlier volumes, they were the best visual?books I found and had names under the photos which might help with family research. My GG Grandfather Daniel KERWAN/KERVAN/KIRWAN etc. was sponsored when he joined the RIC, by Inspector Thomas Fitzsimon who was based in Ourlat at the time of Daniel's appointment. It is therefore assumed Daniel came from the Ourlat area. Daniel's father was called William. Daniel was born in Wexford?in about 1826. He was transferred by the RIC to Tipperary south where he married someone called Maryanne. He then was moved to Waterford where his two sons?PATRICK and JEREMIAH JOHN were born. He resigned in 1861 and emigrated with his wife and children?to South Africa, Patrick was aged 1 and Jeremiah John an infant.?I would be very grateful if anyone has information on any KERWAN, KIRWIN, KERVAN, KERWIN etc people in the general area of Ourlat to let me know. We spent hours wondering around graveyards, my admiration for those people who have transcribed so many of them grew enormously and I feel huge praise and thanks?should be given to them. The weathered stones are difficult to read, not helped by the gentle rains of Ireland, which make some old cemeteries slippery and certainly very muddy. Many thanks once again.
