Paul~ The ones we have received at the various GROs over the years varied. Some are xerox/photo copies with the name of the Clerk on the bottom. There were some which the clerk copied with her name listed as transcriber. The cost for the ones for Mayo GRO with the exchange at that time, (1.55 per Euro approx.) were about 7 Euros per my cousin who picked them up while we were at the Castlebar County Library. It was not a good exchange last year. As you say nothing ornate. At times we have been told to wait while the clerk looks because there might be a confusion re: correct names or other data question. Once verified, depending on the number we are getting, we pay or return in an hour. Mary Ellen Mary, Just for info - when I was last over in Dublin a few years ago I went to the GRO and purchased copies of birth/marriage/death certificates for 4 euroes each. They look like photocopies of the register on plain white paper - nothing fancy. Using a credit card will give you the current exchange. Therefore the trying to figure out the euro exchange and getting correct money order is eliminated. Now, if he can find the data on familysearch.com, all the better. We have used it for some orders but find there is no difference in the fee. However, be SURE it is your ancestor. The numerous given & surnames listed at times for a single civil parish can get you an incorrect certificate. The last one we ordered in late 2010, had about $12. charged to our card. Even when we are in Ireland and at the local GRO, we have NEVER paid such a small fee as 3 Euros. If there is way to do it with postage, please advise. Currently, I have 8 (births, marriages deaths) to get certificates for our family records. Delay was D/T lack of data which we now have. Not going over this year so would love to be able to reduce the stack for 24 Euros - about $35 Mary Ellen ----------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-WEXFORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-WEXFORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-WEXFORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ________________________________ From: Paul Cullen <p.cullen8_0987@btopenworld.com> To: irl-wexford@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, April 6, 2011 10:04:55 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-WEXFORD] FOLEY in and around Gorey
The fire in the Four Courts building in 1922 destroyed most of these earlier records. There is only one General Registry Office and PRONI for Northern Ireland.. You can get a full copy of the certificate or a copy of the entry in the Church Registry. This is now 6 euro's, just checked. The family search site is constantly adding as it is transcribed by volunteers and the LDS. The fire destroyed most of the registrations so for early ones you can be lucky with Church records. Catholic records up to 1880 can be found at the National Library.
