    1. [IRL-WEXFORD] CORONERS INQUEST
    2. Cara_Links
    3. March 17th 1826 -The Wexford Evening Post CORONER'S INQUEST On Wednesday last, an inquest was held by Charles A Walker, and Christopher G Harvey Esqrs., Magistrates, on the body of Mogue Murphy, at Ballysheen, in the Barony of Forth in this County, when the following persons were empanelled as a Jury William Higginbotham-Foreman William Hayes John Furlong John Butler James Harpur Patrick Parle Benjamin Underwood Richard Pettit Martin Rossiter James Blake James Winter The Jury having viewed the body of he deceased the following witnesses were then examined. Thomas Duff:- deposed that he and he deceased had been in the employment of William Furlong, of Ballysheen, farmer, that on Saturday three weeks, the deceased brought a car with trees and plough on it, from Killinick, and that when in the lane leading to said Furlong's house, and near thereto, said Furlong, desired witness to lift the trees from the car; witness did so; and when he had gone some short distance, said Furlong called after witness "come back, for that Murphy (deceased) was down, and to come to his assistance." Witness observed deceased on the ground, and William Furlong endeavouring to support him. Said Furlong asked deceased, was he hurt-deceased replied "not: that in a little time, he would be no worse." Witness heard no dispute or angry words pass between said Furlong and deceased, and was not more than a perch distant from them at the time, and thinks he must have heard it, had any dispute taken place. Never knew said Furlong to have found any fault with the deceased. John Kavanagh:- deposed that he was in the haggard of said Wm. Furlong, within about three perches of the part of the lane mentioned by the last witness, and within view of the deceased, and of said Furlong, heard said Wm. Furlong calling out to deceased to stop the horse, and looking in that direction, saw said Furlong calling out for "help, that deceased was down," appearing greatly distressed at what had occurred . John Codd:-deposed, that he had accompanied deceased from Killinick, who had a horse and car, with some elder trees and a plough there on; that when in the lane leading to said Furlong's house, and near a gap leading into a field, Wm. Furlong and Thomas Duff stopped the car down the lane to the house, Furlong called out to the deceased to stop, and witness then observed that the car was in the act of falling back off the horse; Furlong ran up beside the car, as witness supposed, to hinder the car from upsetting and the next moment he sae Furlong supporting deceased in his arms, and heard Furlong call for assistance for the deceased; heard Furlong ask the deceased "was he hurt?" the boy replied "not;" Furlong said he had intended to have struck the horse, to endeavour to hinder the car from falling back, and witness is of opinion that, had the horse made a sudden spring forward, it would have had that effect. Dr Barron:- deposed that late on the Tuesday evening following the accident, he received a message from William Furlong to visit deceased. That he saw him on Wednesday morning, and found him affected with paralysis of he left side, and an injury on the right side of the head, occasioned by a wound from some sharp instrument; that the skull was fractured, and thinks the cheek of snaffle bridle would inflict a similar wound; consulted with Dr. Pierce, when they agreed to Trepan the skull of deceased; immediately after the operation, and when deceased was in his perfect senses, he shook hands with his master, William Furlong, and said, "he forgave him all the pain he suffered on his account, and there had been no ill will between them;" considers that the fracture was the cause of Mogue Murphy's death. Dr Renwick:- deposed that he had viewed the body of deceased, and considers that a fracture produced by some pointed instrument on the right side of the head was the cause of Mogue Murphy's death Mary Winters:- nurse tender, deposed that , shortly before Mogue Murphy died, and while he was perfectly in his senses, he desired that William Furlong should be sent for. Mogue Murphy then said, "he would no die easy, if he thought his master, Wm. Furlong, should be put to any trouble on his account of his death; that the cause of it was entirely accidental, that there was no anger between him and his master, but that he loved his master, and that his master loved him; this was the last conversation the deceased had. The evidence having closed the Jury retired for a short term, when they found a verdict of "Accidental Death" caused by a fracture on the right side of the head, proceeding from a stroke of a bridle, accidentally given by Wm. Furlong." William Furlong then gave bail to appear at the next assizes, in cse any proceedings should be instigated against him

    2. Re Doyle-Kehoe Some time ago Cara Links responded to my request for information about the marriage of Johanna Doyle (maiden name -Ferns or Perns) to Peter Doyle (Enniscorthy) about 1839-49. One set of parents of this couple was Mary Kehoe b about 1795 and Laurence Doyle. Mary and Laurence had children: James b 1820, Bridget b 1819, John L. b 1821, Mary Ann b 1827 & Owen plus one of my great grandparents, either Peter or Johanna. The Laurence Doyle family moved to Chatham Ontario, Canada about 1840. Peter and Johanna did not leave Ireland until about 1851-3. Their children James b 1842, Mary b 1840, Laurence b 1845, Peter b 1850 & Johanna b 1847 were baptized at St. Aidan's Cathedral at Enniscorthy. My Grandfather Bartholomew William was born in Chatham in 1854 &Owen P. and John were born in the US. I believe the message came when I was out of town so I am now responding in hope that she (or any others) might share information which would help me find their marriage record and identify whether Johanna or Peter was the child of Mary Kehoe and Laurence Doyle. 3. In my family Tree I have a marriage of James Arthur Scott to Margaret Elizabeth Bates. Both were from Gorey. The marriage took place in 1883 in Dublin, but neither father's names are recorded. I have a copy of the marriage registration on which it shows that one of the witnesses was a Josephine Bates. I would be interested in knowing more abut Margaret's line. I believe that she was part of the family of Coach Builders (Bates& Sons of Gorey). I have a scanned picture of the house in which they lived and two of the items made by Bates & Sons. Gorey Church of Ireland records are not available in Dublin - they are held locally at the Church. Otherwise I would take a look at them for you. 1. [IRL-WEXFORD] GRIFFIN / GRIFFITHS Surname
    2. Peter Booth
    3. Not specifically for this list, but I'm wondering if anyone has encountered the above surnames being interchanged. Of five early families in NSW 1788-1850, three have both the above variants registered on more than one occasion. Indeed one family seem to have changed completely from Griffin to Griffiths. I'm aware that many Irish dropped prefixes in attempts to disguise their origins, but this is completely unexpected. Any help appreciated. Peter in Sydney

    3. I just found a few ads placed by John Kinsley (Kinsella) formerly of Co. Wexford in the Boston Pilot searching for information on family. The first ad placed on 4 Nov 1871 was in regard to Martin and Daniel Keougho. It states they were the sons of Thomas Keougho and Elizabeth Kinsley. Elizabeth was John's sister. It also states they were natives of the parish of Ballaghkeen. The second ad was placed on 18 Nov 1865. It was seeking information on Elizabeth Kinsley Daley, the wife of Owen Daley. They were said to be natives of Enniscorthy. They later moved to Illinois, U.S.A. Based on the Kinsley wills in Wyoming County, Pa., it is assumed Elizabeth was the daughter of Miles Kinsley (Kinsella). John (m. Catherine Quinn), Elizabeth, and Miles were children of James Kinsella and Mary Sinnott along with Michael, James (m. Margaret Havey), Mary (m. Michael Swords), William, David, Catherine (m. Patrick Swords), Patrick, and Ellen (m. Michael Corcoran). If there are any connections to anyone's families, please contact me. I have extensive information on John's family and also on other siblings. Thanks. Leigh Taffe Acla The Irish Settlement

Greetings from Toronto. My g-granmother, Mary (Parle) Doyle of Duncannon was buried in Ramsgrange in 1926. I'd like to find out if others are in the same grave, particularly her husband Patrick, born Duncannon c1848. Patrick died (perhaps drowned as he was a fisherman) between 1889 when their youngest child was born and the 1901 census where Mary is shown as a widow. No gravestone has been found for Mary - perhaps finances did not allow for one- but her mass card specifies that she was buried on Ramsgrange. Also, I have a fairly good list of descendents of Moses Doyle, Duncannon c1800 if anyone is researching that line. 1. [IRL-WEXFORD] Happy Christmas
    2. Mary Simpson
    3. Hoping that all on the list have a really happy Christmas - no emergencies or traumas etc., just a great time with all the family and a wonderful year to follow with at least one ( or two or more? ) bricks falling out of the old walls. And many thanks to all those who have given help and advice, and shared their knowledge around. Slan Mary happy on at least three counts; 1. the days are getting longer 2. the ice and snow are going and the weather is a mite softer 3. having a wonderful time finding more family on the new website of the old Kerry parish records on www.irishgenealogy.ie
