    3. John, I looked on my Cromwellian Adventurers cd and could not find William Handcock listed, however, that doesn't mean he was not an Adventurer. Many people pooled their subscriptions and appointed one man to draw land for them. Later the land was divided up among the individual subscribers, some of whose names are still not known. The next step would be to go through the Grants for Ireland and even possible the Inquisitions. Those books can be found in London and in the National Library in Dublin. Even then, if not listed there, he could still be an Adventurer because an enormous amount of trading went on before the draw for land, and after, and all of these trades are not recorded. One might also have been awarded land in one county but ended up with land in a different county after a trade. If your man came to Ireland before the war, he was more likely a merchant or a preacher, not saying he was not an Adventurer also. There were quite a few Irish names on the list of Adventurers as well. Could be your man bought land off an Adventurer. You might try to find The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland, 1651-1660" by John P. Prendergast on Google books to help you understand the process. Co. Tipperary was special. There were 4 baronies that were distributed amoung the soldiers, but the rest of the county, the best lands, were alloted off to VIP's and Cromwell's favorites, and these are some of the hardest to ferret out. Some of Cromwell's officers ripped off the soldiers when buying their alloted land. There is not a good, complete list of the soldiers who received land in lieu of pay anywhere that I know about. 3. Janet, I have no background on the topic of your reply to Peggy but note your comments about Adventurers in the Cromwell Wars. I would appreciate it greatly if you could give me some references that I may be able to look up to the Adventurers or even soldiers with Cromwell as I have a very distant ancestor of my mother - Willam Handcock of Twyford near Athlone -who may, an unverified source says, may have come with Cromwell's troops or been some such as an "adventurer". He is reputed to have been granted lands in Co Westmeath about the 1640s. Going back that far is not easy from distant NZ where I live. William's descendants are reasonably well documented as in 17th and 18th centuries etc have been mostly traced there as they were fairly prominent. There was also a small branch in Cork, seemingly Cork City. Dear Peggy & Janet, I am descended from the Cork branch of the Hardings. I do have a Richard Harding, but born is 1859 in Ballycotton, Cork. These Hardings were mostly involved with the sea: fishermen, naval officers, lighthouse keepers. I would love to know more about the origin of the Hardings in Ireland - did they all descend from the Cromwellian Adverturers? Looking forward to hearing more on this topic! Hilda

    3. It's going to be difficult. Perhaps somebody knows where there is any volume of Wexford records. There are few on IGI or IFHF, and any on FSbeta or FS Pilot only seem to be from civil registration in 1864. You need to look for clues. Check for death records and possible tombstone inscriptions for parents of a townland for place of birth. Religion would also be helpful. This could be on census or christenings of any children. You might also look for migration records. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. It a case of checking one place after another just to get a single clue. IGI does have a user submission for a 1786 marriage of a Richard Harding in Wexford that could be his father. But there is no spouse name. Peter in Sydney

    3. Marian, You left out the most important bit - Eliza's parents. I can see a number of possible deaths in NSW 1875-1885 and all have parent names. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to appear on the Irish Transportation Database, so you can't get much detail on her crime and trial. Perhaps there is some detail in the papers of the Andromeda. Have you looked for them? There may also be something in Colonial Secretary's Papers but those online only go to 1825. I also found her in a submitted family tree at Rootsweb, but no detail on her, only her children and the origins of William who looks to have died aged 102. You may already have contact with the submitter. Peter in Sydney

    1. [IRL-WEXFORD] Wilson
    2. I have been searching for Eliza Wilson born 1808 Wexford for years. Eliza was a convict and charged with stealing goods according to the shipping records she came out on the Andromeda 1834 italso stated she had a pearl in her right eye (think this is a cyst). She was single although she had a baby with her. Other convicts on  the ship told her to say she was married and of course this was recorded so after she had served her time and she and another convict William Williams (Hooghley 1828) he was from Brecon Wales applied to be married this was refused on the grounds that Eliza had stated she was married I know that they applied at least 3 times and refused each time. Have never been able to find where they married. She was 73 when she died in N.S.W. and still with William If anyone is searching for Wilson I whould really like to hear from them. Marian Hassett

    3. The tunnel under the Shannon is now open making the trip from Shannon airport or to Shannon airport much easier as we no longer have to negotiate through Limerick City. It is also going to make a trip into Limerick City much more pleasurable as much of the traffic is now going to be going on the by-pass. The government expects that 14,000 and eventually 25,000 vehicles will no longer be on Limerick City streets. Janet

    1. [IRL-WEXFORD] Roll call DOYLE and DOYLE/KEHOE
    2. I want to establish the townlands for my great great grandparents; Peter Doyle and Johannah Doyle. One complication is that they both had the surname Doyle. Johannah's tombstone says she was a native of Ferns Parish. The parents of either Peter Doyle or Johannah Doyle (Laurence Doyle and Mary Kehoe) came to the Chatham, Ontario, Canada area about 1830-1840. The children of Peter and Johannah Doyle baptized at St. Aidan's, Enniscorthy were: Ann b July 1839, sponsors James Doyle & Mary Doyle Mary b June 1840, sponsors Thomas Doyle, Anne Cogley James b Dec 1842 , sponsors John Wood and Mary Kelly Laurence, b March 1845 sponsorsMartin Tobin, Catherine Furlong Ann, b Feb 1847, sponsors Joseph Shanaghan? Catherine Klegan? Comparing the sponsors names with the surnames of persons listed in Griffith's Valuation made it likely that the townland was Templeshannon, but that it not certain. The next child, born in Chatham, Ontario, Canadain 1953, was Barthlomew W. Doyle, my great great grandfather, Shortly after his birth the family moved to New Dublin, Ill where a Bartholomew Doyle had settled about 1839. He also came through Canada and was likely related to either Peter or Johannah. Peter and Johannah's sons Owen P. and John were born in Illinois. I would appreciate any suggestions on determining whether Peter or Johannah were the child of Laurence Doyle and Mary Kehoe.

    3. Pat-great to see you back on the list-hope you are feeling much better. I have done little on the Derenzys since I was last in touch other than continue to file all the references I come across to the name and varients so that hope I can some day find time to do a session concentrating on the name-now that I'm 90 I will need to hurry up!
