I think my John Sinnott & Mary Smith mustve married before registration(only just) as they have a son William born on 5th May 1864. John & Mary both born around 1840 we think. Possibly around Faythe St. Not sure what church this would involve. Mark
The only clue I have to a place in Ireland for my family is that my first cousin three times removed, John Sullivan, was born June 24, 1846 at Murphy Island, Ireland. In his father's naturalization papers, it said the family came from Wexford, as did the rest of our Sullivans. His father was Michael Sullivan, born 1805 and his mother was Catherine Murphy, born 1823. Thanks, Martha
Hi Viola, "A Farewell to Famine" is a book about the emigration of 1000 people from their homes in counties Wicklow and Wexford under the direction of an ageing priest, Fr. Thomas Hore. In the alphabetical listing of those people is Thomas Hore, age 54, on the "Ticonderoga" They were heading for Little Rock, Ark., but some went to other places, including Wexford, Iowa, where there is a stained glass window in the Immaculate Conception Church: " IN MEMORY OF REV. THOMAS HOARE DONATED BY THE FIRST SETTLERS" I realize that this is much later than the 1798 rebellion, but there could be some distant connection with your family. Chapter 1, The Shaping of Thomas Hore: "....His exact date of birth is unknown but it was either 1795 or the following year. His father, Edmond, lived at the descriptively named townland of Coldblow, Broadway in the parish of Our Lady's Island. The other members of the family were Thomas's mother, Alicia, and his three brothers, at least two of whom were older than he. Apparently their branch was the senior branch of that Hore family There follows a brief history of the Hore family (Norse origin) and of the region. There is only a brief mention of the 1798 uprising, when he was 2 years old. Hope you can find a connection here, and hopefully obtain a copy of the book for yourself. My approx. 6"x9" paperback was $17.95, printed in England, author: Jim Rees. I don't recall where I got my copy, probably ordered it online. Good Luck! Cara, Is it easy for you to look up names? If it is - would you be so kind as to check for Kehoes (Keoghs) from Carlow/Wicklow/Wexford and Hickeys from Carlow/Wicklow/Wexford? I don't know first names around that date, just approx location of residence - Clonegall Parish Carlow/Wicklow/Wexford area - where the county borders meet. If the search is name by name, forget the request; it fear it will take to much time and trouble for you. Thanks very much for your consideration. Dear Viola, In 1974 I visited the Castle/Museum in Enniscorthy. They have many artifacts from that battle. I asked the men in charge of the museum if there were lists of those killed and where they were buried. They said they were buried where they fell. At that time they didn't have any lists. I imagine these men were volunteers and not that knowledgable about sources available. Today, I would think, there is much more available. I hope to go to Dublin in October of this year to do research and then on to Wexford. The Irish were very outnumbered and for the most part just had picks as weapons. The British were numbered in the 10,000s with guns, cannons. Try googling 1798 Battle of Vinegar Hill, Wexford, Ireland. There is quite a bit online. Sorry I couldn't have been more help. I always thought the name of my 1798 ancestor killed in the battle of Vinegar Hill was James Howlan/Howlin's father (from New Ross - address Horeswood), until I visited Enniscorthy, and saw the location of Vinegar Hill. The name could be of Patrick Murphy's father or Mary Cowman's father (they were from Enniscorthy). When my greatgrandfather, Thomas Howlan, son of James Howlan/Howlin and Mary Murphy), came to Canada c. 1848, he brought the gun used in the battle. James Howlan m Catherine Meyler 1815 Templetown, Wexford Patrick Murphy m Mary Cowman 1834 probably in Enniscorthy,Wexford (they were both from Enniscorthy) (their daughter married Thomas Howlan in Kingston , Ontario 1857) Sorry this is pretty vague as regards finding a name. I think ive just found children of John Sinnott & Mary Smith. Never looked on IGI as i tend not to find Irish records on there. My Anastasia wasnt born until 1884 but weve found 5 of her siblings, most are at least 10 years older than her. John - 1872 Mary - 1880 Patrick - 1868 Thomas - 1865 Joseph - 1874. All born on Faythe St i presume.
