    3. While I'm at it - What townland, probably in Bannow, might have sounded like Baraghanew to an enlistment officer in the 1820's please? And could it be an old name for Barrystown? Or part of Barrystown? If so, I think I just found my George Murphy in the army, too. Janet

Terry, I really agree with you. For YEARS I have been trying to get my GARDNER line in Wexford. I have finally given up on the "missing" Bannow parish book ever showing up - well, almost given up. After YEARS, I might finally have a clue as to who my Thomas Gardner might be, since he only married and lived in Wexford, but probably was not born here. He may be the Thomas Gardner who was born in Waterford City and joined the army. For YEARS I have been trying to find the Bannow line of BROADERS/BROTHERS, one of whom, Martin, was a witness at the wedding of the son, Daniel, Thomas Gardner and Bridget Keogh, and I have finally succeeded. Now we might see if Martin Brothers was related to my Thomas or just a friend, and would his age make him a contemporary of Thomas, the father, or Daniel, the son. If he is Thomas's age, he will be the Martin Brothers that was in the same army unit as Thomas. It may be the only tenuous link I will ever get, barring the return of the missing Bannow book [and whoever has it needs to return it!] I will go forward on this sort of iffy link and trace Thomas in Waterford City as best I can; I have his parents, but they may not be from Waterford originally either. The point of this message is not to give up, and to look at things like the witnesses at baptisms and weddings and all sorts of things to move forward. Now, how did I find the right Broaders family. I found a note in the new book on the Hook Peninsula that talked of Fr. Broaders, who had a brother in Bannow, and who chased the ghost from Loftus hall. I got on-line and read everything I could about Fr. Broaders and the ghost story, and came upon the name of a woman who said she was related to the good Fr. Luckily, she was in the phone book, and I talked to her about what I was after. She, in turn, spoke to someone else and they to another, and the next thing I knew I was talking to a most charming Broaders man, a storyteller, who knows who to talk to in order to find out more about Marrtin Broaders. It isn't easy, but it sure is fun!! One of the baptism sponsors for Daniel in Ballycullane was a George Murphy, by the way. Now how many George Murphy's can there be in Ballycullane? Seems like George would be a pretty rare Christian name for a Murphy. Janet

    2. Sorry, I seem to be having a senior moment and my computer keeps self deleting. I did of course mean KERWAN/KIRWAN?KERVANE etc in the region of OULART. Kate -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 4 Jul 2007 3.21pm Subject: [IRL-WEXFORD] Trip to Wexford looking for KEWAN/KERVAN/ KIRWAN/KERWIN ancesters. Thank you to all the lovely people on this list who gave us ideas on what to see and do in Thank you to all the very kind people on this list who made recommendations for our recent trip to Wexford. We had a great time and wondered why it took us so long to get to Ireland which we should have visited years ago. We received a very warm welcome wherever we went and enjoyed our time in Clare, Galway and Wexford immensely. Cyril's suggestion of a visit to Wexford Library was particularly fruitful. The library staff are wonderful, extremely helpful and patient with novice researchers. The staff introduced me to Des Waters, a member of the public doing research in the library, who immediately helped me and retrieved my GG Grandfather Daniel KERWAN/ KERVAN/ KIRWAN?full RIC records from Dublin and emailed them to me the next day. The library has so much research material on microfilm, it is well worth a visit.?The library sell a book called 'Between the place and parish', compiled by Celestine Rafferty,?published by Wexford County council public library service. This is a guide to the historical administrative divisions of County Wexford, it makes finding townlands and parishes much easier. Of course, for those lucky people who have access to this book in their public library there is no need to buy it, but for those of us who don't, it does help. The Wexford?library is open until 1 o'clock on Sat! urday and closed all day Monday. I found a series of books by Nicholas Furlong called 'County Wexford in the rare ol' times'. These books are mainly photographic images of old Wexford and give a clear image as to how our ancestors lived. Unfortunately, Volumes 1-3, the earliest photos are out of print and only Volume 4 is available to buy. It would be very good if the publishers reprinted the earlier volumes, they were the best visual?books I found and had names under the photos which might help with family research. My GG Grandfather Daniel KERWAN/KERVAN/KIRWAN etc. was sponsored when he joined the RIC, by Inspector Thomas Fitzsimon who was based in Ourlat at the time of Daniel's appointment. It is therefore assumed Daniel came from the Ourlat area. Daniel's father was called William. Daniel was born in Wexford?in about 1826. He was transferred by the RIC to Tipperary south where he married someone called Maryanne. He then was moved to Waterford where his two sons?PATRICK and JEREMIAH JOHN were born. He resigned in 1861 and emigrated with his wife and children?to South Africa, Patrick was aged 1 and Jeremiah John an infant.?I would be very grateful if anyone has information on any KERWAN, KIRWIN, KERVAN, KERWIN etc people in the general area of Ourlat to let me know. We spent hours wondering around graveyards, my admiration for those people who have transcribed so many of them grew enormously and I feel huge praise and thanks?should be given to them. The weathered stones are difficult to read, not helped by the gentle rains of Ireland, which make some old cemeteries slippery and certainly very muddy. Many thanks once again. 3. Hi Terry maybe I am searching some of the same Murphy's you are. I am not sure if my Murphy's came from Wexford or not but I would be fairly certain it would not be far from there. If they were not from Wexford then I would hazard a guess they would have come from Waterford as they use to live on Waterford Bridge Road in Newfoundland between St. John's and Kilbride. I do know the Sinnott's in my line were from Adamstown Parish as a headstone in Newfoundland says that is where he originated from and was born about 1799/1800. 3. Sometimes, Viola, a break is all you need to return with increased vigour. Your family will appreciate it. Years ago I asked 2 of mine who were living in UK at the time to go and order 2 certificates for me. In those days it was easier and cheaper for them to do that. It must have taken them 6 months to get around to it and they both lived in London. This was for my father who I never met. Only about 4 years later my son went with me to Guernsey and a couple of years later he asked me to do the Irish connection. This time he was visiting in London and came home with lots of vital certificates and enthusiasm. Never give up, just have a break.
