    1. [IRL-WEXFORD] Confusion about Gorey and Kilmore
    2. Margaret Miesterfeld
    3. Thanks Cara! My confusion about Gorey and Kilmore stem from an obituary about my John Doyle born in Wexford County abt 1824 and died in New Orleans 11 Nov 1877. His wife Mary Faulkner Doyle reported in his obituary that he was from Kilmore. I am presuming that Mary and John Doyle were Catholic due to the fact that they were married in St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Orleans in 1853 and raised their family Catholic. Mary Faulkner was born in Fermanagh County, Ireland abt 1824. John Doyle served three years in the Union Army during the Civil War in the U.S. He joined the Union Army as a Blacksmith in New Orleans and marched north with the 3rd Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry serving several Cavalry units as a Blacksmith. I sent for John Doyle's military papers at the U.S. National Archives and in his military papers he stated that he was from Conna Hill near the town of Gorey in Wexford, Ireland. At the end of the Civil War he returned to New Orleans and his growing family and he started a Blacksmith Shop. I consider him a very smart man for joining the Union Army. In New Orleans there was a very large slave trade and even the New Orleans Light and Power Company owned slaves. An Irishman would have a difficult time finding work in New Orleans at that time. I have a strong feeling that possibly his records may be found at St. Mary's Catholic Church. I haven't been able to make progress on the Doyle/Faulkner family research due to my own ignorance on how to proceed. I have researched several German families back to the 1600's in Germany using Civil and Church Records on microfilm, but am stumped on how to proceed on the Irish research. Not knowing where to start your research in Wexford and Fermanagh Counties is a big stumbling block. I enjoy reading the Wexford List for it reflects the ambiance of the people and the country in the dialogue. I love the way the Irish can turn an ordinary event like rain into "a soft morning." The Irish are charming poets and story tellers. I would appreciate any and all help in finding my Doyles and Faulkners in Ireland. Thanks much, Margaret

    3. Peter, You may have the same problem that I have. First, Collins is the anglicization of Cullinan(e) (and Quillinan and Quinlan and Callinan), and it is usually used by those who were Protestant, or Protestant in the past. At some point you may have to revert to C of I records as I did on Gardner. My ancestor was also a tailor and learned the trade in the army and that is where I found the records. I looked and there was a Thomas Collins born in Cork abt 1806, and another born in Limerick abt 1810, another in Cork abt 1802, and one born in Duncormack, Wexford abt 1772, and a couple of others. Any one of these might have opted to live in Wexford after they retired out. You can see these by searching the National Archives Catalog [not the Archives] at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp Put in the name and then WO for the department. Leave the dates blank. The only ones that appear here are the ones that were once in Kilmainham hospital at some point and not all the men with that name who were in service. Sadly many records are lost. Janet On 7/5/07, Keith Collins <[email protected]> wrote: > I know this sounds obvious, are you focusing on the Cork area? 3. Hi to you all researchers of all ages, I am searching for the birth/baptism of Owen Thomas Connick, a surgeon, my gggrand-father (he would be born somewhere between 1805 and 1820). His parents were Eugene Connick and Anastasia Emilia O'Neill (I am also looking for their mariage and death certificates)(they both were alive in 1846 when their son married in Canada). They were either from Sutton Parish (according to a priest who did a genealogy in Canada at the end of the 19th Century on them and their descendants) or from Kilbraney (according to oral tradition in the family)(both places are within Wexford County). Both me and Eleanor Le Bourdais (and tons of other cousins) in Canada (and the States) are looking forward for any help on this matter. Thanks for reading me and for your kind help! 1. [IRL-WEXFORD] Finding families
    2. Mary Simpson
    3. The conversations have been very interesting lately! I am lucky in that I know about grandparents, g grandparents and whereabouts in Ireland they came from, I really feel for people who only have " Ireland " or the county that they came from, it's hard enough at the best of times - oh to have the ease of a Scottish forebear, SO easy to look up! - and so now I am trying to find g g grandparents, and g g aunts & uncles etc, and also, even more importantly, something about the places that they lived in and the history of those places. We did find one g g g grandfather and mother in Kerry, just exactly where my mother had said they were, and have been reunited with the family, which has been something very special. Its just as important " to put flesh " on our families lives that we take into account all the other people around and with them, their neighbours, friends, co-workers, other tradespeople, Parish Priests, even landlords! If we are able to find these and place them it makes so much more sense and brings the past alive. I have a grandfather who was a cottier and shared con-acre with his neighbour, and I have been able to pinpoint on the old maps just exactly where this all was, and to be able to transpose the spot onto today's map. And if you then find their graves in the local churchyard it does give you goosepimples...... It's a way of telling them that they are still important to us, and have not been forgotten. Also don't ever overlook witnesses to marriages, sponsors or Godparents, or people giving information about births or deaths, they are usually family. All this is hard, but it's because it's so very hard that it is so rewarding. However, from time to time, it is very sensible to take a break, clear out the old grey matter and give it a rest. Then you can return to the problem with a clear head. Mary By the way, does anybody have any idea at all of how I start looking for my grandfather's elder brother, who left London for Madagascar ( of all places! Why on earth there? ) sometime before 1891? Wexford family, PATRICK WALSH, born about 1839, father and mother unknown, from Barntown. Moved into Wexford town, parish of St Iberius, died 1918. I do not know if their parents came to Canada, but doubt it since a brother Thomas was still living in Ireland when Patrick died in Palo Alto Co.,Iowa,U.S. in 1908. Christopher,a bachelor and Patrick, his wife ,Mary and children migrated to Iowa about 1870. I am continually searching for information on the CLEAR,CLARE family from Co Wexford. Gladys,Iowa
