    1. Re: [Irl-Westmeath] 1911 Census
    2. Hi Marybeth, Thank you for the offer! I didn't know the FHC had access to this census! I would really appreciate getting the film # for the 1911 census; civil parish of Faughalstown, townland of Streamstown. This is the townland my grandmother's family was listed in the '01 census so I assume it's the same in 1911. If you need any other information before you go please let me know. Is the index film by townland name or surname? Thanks again for the help. Jane in CA

    1. Re: [Irl-Westmeath] 1911 Census
    2. Jane - I have ordered the 1911 Census Index for Westmeath through my local Family History Library, film # 1544954, and should be able to view it next week. If you like I will let you know the film # for the census in Faughalstown or anywhere else you wish. I will probably be ordering that census roll myself as well as several others. It takes about two or three weeks for them to get the FHC from Salt Lake. Marybeth

    2. Hi List, Has anyone ever had access to the 1911 census, and where did you get it? I'm looking for the area within the civil parish of Faughalstown. Or maybe nearby. Thanks, Jane in CA

    1. [Irl-Westmeath] New Irish Placenames mailing list, etc.
    2. To all listers: Here's the advent of a new era in locating that pesky townland or "village". (From a friend, with permission). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >> ANNOUNCEMENT New Internet Discussion Group & Website - Irish Placename Studies We are pleased to announce that a new discussion group with the above title has been created. Irish Placename Studies has been designed to fulfil a number of requirements: - To provide a central point for general enquiries about Irish placenames - To bring together those currently working in placename & related fields on the internet - To consolidate and build on the various placename and mapping projects on the internet - To work in conjunction with established placename organisations in Ireland - To raise awareness of, and begin to act on, poorly researched areas of Irish placename studies Basically, from your point of view what all that boils down to is this: We're there to handle queries about untraceable townlands or parishes etc., discuss modern and medieval placename issues, bring amateur enthusiasts and experts together, raise awareness of issues like the near total lack of recording and study of Irish field names etc., and above all to drag together all those disparate groups producing digital parish & townland maps and placename database materials like the awe-inspiring IREAtlas to begin a coordinated effort to digitally map out Ireland's placenames, making huge volumes of accurate data available free to... well people like you. Oh, and there'll shortly be a website tied to the discussion group, and acting as a home/ gateway to whatever datasets or articles we produce or can find elsewhere on the 'net. The general idea is to build up a critical mass of people so that achieving some of the above (admittedly gigantic) tasks actually becomes feasible. The discussions are all moderated, so there aren't any nuts pushing obscene or offensive ideas or material, and the tone is open, friendly and enthusiastic. 8-) So, want to be in on this enormous, exciting, challenging, terrifying project from the start...? or just want to ask some simple questions? Here's what you need to do: Step 1: email a blank message to this address - [email protected] Step 2: there is no step 2... you're in! 8-) Looking forward to seeing you there... 3. Hi Frank My wife & I were in Moate in 1998 and are going back there in August (I hope :-) ). It's a great place.. Make sure to go to the Dun na Si cultural centre and if it's still going make sure to get to the Ceili (sic?) on a Friday night. You'll have a ball.. be prepared for a late night..early morning.. Stage show starts about 9.45pm (nothing starts early in Ireland) and goes for about an hour. After that, supper and then the set dancing starts .. hope you enjoy .. Kind regards Bernie O'Connor Melbourne Australia

    2. Spencer Allen
    3. Hi List, I'm trying to find where my G. grandfather was born. I have his DOB as 18/7/1880 (from family Bible) He married Annie Aris in Coventry 5/2/1906 George's father was Charles Young I know my grandmother was baptised (Kathleen) at the Presbyterian Church of Athlone on 14/5/1912. George & Annie Young were living 12, High St, Athlone in 1914. In 1917 it was 8 High St. along with a Mr Hanlon. Can anyone local tell me if the Church is still there? Would the High St. addresses still be there as houses? Where do i look for a baptism for George, or who do i contact to search for me, as i can't get to Ireland Is the surname YOUNG a 'local' name? Thanks for your time, Angela Allen.

    3. I would sugget you check www.local.ie and then go to the Westmeath site and check out the Church records-Protestant church for the townland and then you should check the birth records. Remember Ireland has them after 1864 and then also the 1911 census. The LDS Mormon libraries has some of these if one is available near y ou. ----- Original Message ----- From: Spencer Allen <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2001 10:19 AM Subject: [Irl-Westmeath] Young Family Athlone > Hi List, > I'm trying to find where my G. grandfather was born. > I have his DOB as 18/7/1880 (from family Bible) > He married Annie Aris in Coventry 5/2/1906 > George's father was Charles Young > > I know my grandmother was baptised (Kathleen) > at the Presbyterian Church of Athlone on 14/5/1912. > George & Annie Young were living 12, High St, Athlone > in 1914. > In 1917 it was 8 High St. along with a Mr Hanlon. > > Can anyone local tell me if the Church is still there? > Would the High St. addresses still be there as houses? > Where do i look for a baptism for George, or who do i contact > to search for me, as i can't get to Ireland > Is the surname YOUNG a 'local' name? > > Thanks for your time, Angela Allen. > > > > ============================== > Shop Ancestry - Everything you need to Discover, Preserve & Celebrate > your heritage! > http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog >

    3. The best way I know of to determine a surname's frequency in a particular county is to use the Griffith's Valuation. I took a look to see what was listed and to my surprise there were no SPALDING or SPAULDINGs listed in all of Ireland. Then I looked in "The Book of Irish Families - Great and Small" by IGF O'Lochlainn and neither name was listed in that book, as well. It must be a name of English origin, like my husband's SPENCERs. You may want to consider renting some of the Civil Registration films to see where the births/marriages/deaths for SPALDING/SPAULDING occured most frequently. Notice in the above URL where you see spaces (as between roman and catholic) that there you should hit the underline key. It doesn't show up since the whole address is underlined.
