Geraldine.....can your Gavan name possibly be Cavan or Caven? Where in Westmeath did your Gavan people originate? Hello, I would be interested in anything related to leases with the name Gavan. Geraldine
Kane is not a frequent name I have run across in the Moate area prior to 1835---which is the research area I spend most of my time in. I have seen the name in various RC Church registers but I don't remember which ones. Be sure to list your ancestor with Colette who has agreed to post info for Westmeath researchers once a month beginning in March so that all of us can have a handy list to carry with us when we view documents in case we run across something that someone else is looking for. Keep it specific and no more than two typed lines. Good luck! Where is Oz? Dear Jim, Observing your reply to Carolyne (below) I thought you may have come across my ancestry name, Kane, I think origionally from Moyvore then later at Mullingar, where my grandfather was born in 1865 and later the family lived in Multyfarmum. Anything would be of help, and if anyone needs info of John Kane after his arrival in Oz I have a lot. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Claffee <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 02, 2001 9:07 PM Subject: Re: [Irl-Westmeath] Athlone - Leases > Carolyn: Thanks for sending this information to the list. Hello Josi, I came across the following in LDS Film 1596944 "The Bruce Invasion" by Beryl F.E. Moore Connell Mac Geoghagan lived at Lismoyne Castle, near Ardnurcher, Co. Westmeath & ....though Mac Geoghagan's book no longer exists, fortunately several copies of it were made by Tadhg O'Daly in 1684...these are held by the Bristish Musueem and the Library of trinity College Dublin Headstones in St Mary's Churchyard, Devlin, Co. Carolyn: Thanks for sending this information to the list. Our list is long on people asking for information and short on people providing information. In researching Co. Westmeath I am struck by how surnames seem to cluster in one area. You can almost look at a list of names and identify which location they are from. Some surnames are spread all over Ireland, but not most of them. By mistake I recently ordered the wrong film of a RC Parish Register from a nearby parish and the surnames were completely different from those in the area I usually view. Some Westmeath names are at the Claffey Home Page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~camounts/indexc.html Item #2. ----- Original Message ----- From: Carolyn Lucas <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 02, 2001 12:00 AM Subject: [Irl-Westmeath] Athlone - Leases > Hi Listers > About 10 years ago I copied info re Leases in the Athlone area from an > LDS film. To all: Those of you who signed up (or tried to) for the new Irish Placenames List were probably as surprised as the two list owners were (I can't repeat what they said). This series of Irish mailing lists has been under the aegis of e-groups, a very casual and easy group to deal with. E-groups were purchased by Yahoo (look up the name in the dictionary, if you don't already know) last summer, but Yahoo had made no effort to exercise its management principles (or non-principles - think Yahoo, Nazi memorabilia, French courts) until, coincidentally, the very day that the IPS list was introduced. The words Anschluss and Blitzkrieg come to mind. Even the list owners were not advised of the change of policy in advance. Now, everyone is scrambling. New subscribers are asked a lot of information which was completely absent from the original e-groups procedure. Registration, passwords, ID number, ugh !! I am as unhappy as the list owners.....I had posted the announcement of the list opening on about 30 genealogy lists. For the time being, the lists are all functioning normally. However, I have a suspicion that there might be a change in the list "portal" (if that's what you'd call it) sometime soon. Now that I've got this mass mailing down to a science, I'll keep you informed of any changes. Meanwhile, if you don't mind the hassle of the Yahoo registration procedure, or if you're already a Yahoo "member"; the list still goes on and, by the way, is thriving !!!! Thanks, Ed for those specific instructions. I'll let you all know what is on my film as soon as I can. The FHC is laying new carpet and although the film is there, I cannot read it until installation is complete. This is Florida and folks don't hurry too much around here. Marybeth
Hello, I've just subscribed to the list. I am looking for information on where Ballyhost, West Meath is located. Can anyone help me? Thanks very much, Dariel in Canada
Hello List, I have been following the recent postings about the 1911 Census and thought I could add a little information on the steps that I had to take in order to get the films I needed for my research of my gr-grandparents. First you will need to look at the Index film for your County, Westmeath film # 1952201. There are a few other Counties on this film also. I think the number Marybeth gave -1544954 is also correct and the number I gave is a second filming. Second, you will need to locate your Townland in the correct D.E.D , which is the District and number of that District. Below the District will be a list of Townlands and they will be numbered on the left hand side. To the right of your Townland, may be some more numbers, mark them down also. Once you have found your Townland, you most find which Parish it is located in.You will need this for the next step. Now that you have all this info, you can call the LDS in Salt Lake and find the correct film for your Location. You will have to call the toll free number. ( 1-800-346-6044 ) and when asked if they can help you, you will ask for the British Isles Desk, extension 2090. The person that is volunteering on the desk will ask you if you have the County and Parish, after they pull that up on their screen, they will ask you for the D.E.D. number and the Townland.Give them what you have and ask if the Townland or the District runs into the next film. This happened to me, so now I know to ask the next time. As of about three weeks ago, not all the Counties are on the Web site of the LDS. I had only found 5 of them, although many of the Counties have been filmed, not all of them have been done yet. Westmeath is complete as far as I know. I hope this gets you the films you seek and again, these are the steps I took to get the areas I am searching. If you find a shorter way, please let me or the list know. Any help from others in all our searches is greatly appreciated. Good Luck with your searches. Take Care, Ed Horan
Jane - I'm not sure yet how the 1911 index is set up, but I do know it is not by name. We all know how gaps occur in census indices for whatever reason, and it is immensely helpful to look through the whole townland for other related names and to see who the close neighbors were. If you access www.family search.com and then click on the library catalog, you will be able to see just what the Mormons have filmed by county and then by townland in many cases. It is an eye opener, and I found a film containing exerpts from newspapers in the Athlone area, indexed by name, which contains not only news of a genealogical nature, but also many articles giving a look into life in the past. If I come across it in my records, I'll let you know, or you can look for it on the family search site. Marybeth
