    1. [Irl-Westmeath] LDS Record Help
    2. Jil E
    3. I know this isn't quite the correct forum, but am hoping that some of you with vastly more experience then myself could help me with a questions. I found reference in the LDS records relating to a name and location I'd like more information about. The record is in the Ancestral File, International Genealogical Index/British Isles. There is no source information, film number page number or reference number. What does this mean? Has it then been entered by an individual that may be researching the same line and is not based on official records? Can anyone help? I'm rather new to the LDS research bit. Thanks again for all your wonderful support!! _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

There is the smaller townland about a mile WSW of Rathconrath and 4 miles S of Ballynacarrigy. The coordinates are 298 529 on Discovery map 41. This townland is only about 280 acres. The larger (1800 acres) Farthingstown is a bit over a mile S of Rochfortbridge, smack up against the Offaly border and pretty much at the edge of a huge turf-harvesting area. The center of the townland appears to be about 470 388 on Disc. map 48. This Farthingstown has 30 or more houses in it - the smaller one has only about 10.

    3. Hi; My name is Jim Roan and I am new to the list. I am seeking records for a Bernard ROWAN or ROAN who was listed in Griffith's Valuation as living near Rochfortbridge (from a map reference provided by the Valuation Office of Ireland). A microfiche also lists a birth in 1864 of Bernard's son, Peter ROAN, in Tyrellspass near Rochfortbrdge. My questions are: 1. The townland for Bernard ROAN is listed in Griffith's as Farthingstown. Does anyone know if this is a village or does it denote an area? 2. There appears to be a relationship between a Patrick ROAN and Bernard ROAN, but have been unable to establish the nature of it. The valuation books containing the valuation of Bernard's land shows that he sublet to a James ROAN (son?). The spelling of their surname: ROAN, was changed in 1886 to ROWAN for all three: Patrick, Bernard, and James. 3. There are several ROAN's listed in Griffith's Valuation around Kilbeggan, Tyrellspass, and Tullamore in County Offally: all within a few miles of each other. 4. I have not found anymore LDS films that I can use for births/deaths in this area. Can anyone recommend an approach? Is anyone researching the surname ROAN or ROWAN in Westmeath? Any help will be appreciated. Best Wishes, Jim Roan Marysville, WA

    1. [Irl-Westmeath] Belated introduction
    2. John P. Barlow
    3. My apologies, but I've been unable in the last several months to be very involved with genealogy; hence this late response to the earlier request to introduce ourselves. Although I had great-great-grandparents who lived in and emigrated from Ireland (Antrim and KIldare, I believe), they were of Scottish ancestry. My wife (Jane Barlow), has native Irish ancestry on her father's side, and those ancestors of hers are my reason for subscribing to this list. They lived in County Westmeath before emigrating to the U.S. (Connecticut) in the early 1880s. Her maternal grandmother, Jane Smyth, was brought to the U.S. as an 18 year old in late 1881 or early 1882, with her seven brothers and sisters, by her newly widowed mother, Catherine Conlon Smyth. The Smyths were farmers who lived in the townland of Tubberclare. Her paternal grandfather, William P. Farrell, was brought to the U.S. in, we believe, 1881, also in his late teen years. We don't yet know for certain in which townland his family lived but, from oral family tradition, we believe they were friends/neighbors of the Smyths. As must be obvious, we still have many questions to answer. John Barlow

    1. [Irl-Westmeath] Best way to continue research?
    2. Jil E
    3. I have have found both of my g-grandparents families on Griffiths valuation (1854) and know what townland they are from in Westmeath. I also have copies of their childrens baptisms from Delvin Parish and their marriage certificate (1884). I would like to continue to go farther back. The baptismal/marriage records were gotten by my now deceased Aunt. I know that she travelled there to get them but don't know if she tried to looked for baptismal/marriage records father back to our g-g-grandparents. I know the fathers name on either side from the names that were on their marriage license but not their mothers. Has anyone had any luck writing a parish (especially delvin parish) and getting any information back? Do I send a donation? Would it be acceptable to send it in US Dollars? Could they research with just husbands names and approximate dates? I am aware of Dun na Si but think there prices are extravagant and results poor at best from what I've seen of others reports. 2. Jocelyn Harvey
    3. I'm a new subscriber, having finally found out something about my maternal grandmother's parents (McGlynn). Thomas McGlynn and family left Ireland (Westmeath, in or near Mullingar) about 1840, destined for Liverpool and then Boston, but a storm blew their ship northward and they landed in Bath, Maine. The boat was called the "Oregon". Eventually the family came in covered wagon to Madison, WI, where many McGlynns subsequently lived. My great grandmother Mary McGlynn, one of Tom's children, was born in 1842 (or 1846) and married James Manville in Richland Co., WI, where they raised a family on a farm in Westford, west of Cazenovia. There have been many McGlynns born since in this area. Mary and James Manville are buried in St. Bridget's cemetery in Cazenovia. Some of the original family of Thomas McGlynn (daughters) may have stayed in England on the route to the US. Any further information related to this line will be greatly appreciated! 3. Hi there! Just wanted to let you know what has been added to Westmeath, Ireland Genealogy in April. The list of Marriages from Christ the King Cathedral was sent in by Charlotte Smith. We do welcome contributions so if you see anything that would be of interest and don't mind transcribing it we will be glad to add it to the website. Just contact me. The Church of Ireland Marriage licenses are for people who married in Dublin. I am still going through these records and pulling out some of the other counties so there will be some more additions in the next couple of weeks. You can get the film number online from www.familysearch.com then go to Westmeath, Ireland and then church records. 1. [Irl-Westmeath] New (sort of ) rules for the list (long, but please read)
    2. I have a set of rules given out to everyone when they sign on. Rootsweb automatically gives you this little "welcome" file, and I've added the ground rules to it. Now, I'm not *that* naive, and I know that most people just chuck that email and keep going. Over the last few months, I've been sorting out an update to the ones that I normally post. So, with that in mind, here's at least a paraphrase of what a new lister will find in their "welcome" mailer: 1. Introduce yourself. If nobody knows you're here, nobody can really help you. 2. This is a learning process, for everyone involved. That includes the list-admin too. Please be patient with others, and help out where you can. 3. Relatively speaking, this is a relaxed list. Topics will wander. Because of this, some will not want to follow the thread. Learn to know and love your delete button when a topic no longer interests you. 3a. Because people on the digest get all the messages in lump sum, and in order for people to be able to keep track of the thread, please make sure your topic line reflects the topic of your post. 3b. Should a topic wander a bit too far for too long, I may step in and ask that that particular conversation be taken off the list and into private emails. If the topic wanders back to something that might be of interest to the list at large, feel free to send a copy on over. 3c. If a topic is, for most intents and purpose off-topic, but may still be of interest to the list, please use the prefix "OT" at the beginning of your topic heading. That way others have a heads-up that this may not be of interest to them. 3d. (see also part 8) 4. This is one of my pet peeves, I'll admit, but...PLEASE do NOT send virus warnings to the list. 99.9% of them are hoaxes. If you are unsure if a virus is actually circulating, go to either www.urbanlegend.com or www.mcafee.com, or www.norton.com, and look that particular bug up. (Yeah, I know...we've had an actual one lately, but as I said, the VAST majority are hoaxes.) Same thing goes for jokes, scams, missing children, etc. Most are hoaxes (except for the jokes :P ), and at any rate, aren't related to the subject of this list. 5. Debate and discussion are more than welcome here. Ridicule, name-calling and "flames" are not. Please keep in mind that Rootsweb archives every single last post that comes through this list. I can't remove them, you can't remove them. Do you "really" want your name to be associated with a knock-down, drag-out fight over Aunt Bertha's maiden name? I didn't think so. 5a. Should a flame-war break out, all parties concerned will be told in no uncertain terms to take it off the list. That means immediately, if not sooner. Consider that to be your first, last and only warning shot. 5b. Should parties involved insist on unacceptable behaviour, they will be removed from the list. No further warnings. 5c. After a three-day "cooling-off" period, they may rejoin. If the fight breaks out again, they will be removed permanently, and their email address blocked from the list. Sorry to be so harsh, but I don't put up with nonsense for long. 6. If (and this is a big if) a roll-call is called, it will be called by me. Nobody else gets to call it. Once it's called, the roll-call will only be open for three days. I'll call it closed by the end of day three. 6a. I understand that many don't like roll-calls because of the utter and total chaos that may ensue. You always have the option of unsubbing for the three days, then coming back. 6b. PLEASE refrain from posting "I hate roll call" messages. 7. Copyrighted material. This is a very touchy subject, and debates over this pops up ad nauseum. I offer a couple of simple guidelines: 7 a. If the material is not yours, say so. Tell us where it *did* come from, with as much accuracy as possible. 7b. There is an approximate 80 year span on copyrighted materials, provided it hasn't been extended. This includes newspaper articles, obituaries, etc. 7c. Copyrighted sources may be quoted, but please keep it to a minimum (like one would when quoting for a scholarly work), and site your sources. It's usually those who transcribe entire books and the like that attract the notice of copyright holders. 8. Everyone likes to think they're on the same page as everyone else. When responding to a previous post, please quote the pertinent part (s) of the post, but please do NOT quote the whole thing. One, this becomes very irritating to the digest members when they have to slog through whole posts (and at times whole conversations) over and over again, and two, it's very easy to lose somebody when the parts you're responding to aren't very clear. If you have a quoting feature on your email preferences, please turn it off and quote manually. 9. You all managed to get on this list by yourself. I expect you to be able to get off the list in the same manner. You cannot remove yourself from the list by replying to a post with "unsubscribe". The only reason I should need to manually unsubscribe anyone is if there is something wrong. I'm more than willing to help those who need it, but a manual unsub should be a rare thing. 10. Enjoy yourself. Keep in mind those manners Momma taught you, and you'll do just fine. Melissa Strobel list-admin
