Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards ============================================== The second postcard showing Grattan Square circa 1904 is now for sale in the museum. ============================================== 2. Appeal For Help To Protect The Museums Future ============================================== As most list members may be aware the museum society is a voluntary organisation. We have no permanent staff and no one receives a wage for their efforts on behalf of the society. For the past 8 years or so the day to day staffing of the museum has been carried out by a Fas Community Employment Scheme. In return for receiving approx. 20 euro (20 dollars) on top of their social welfare payment local unemployed people enroll as trainees for a period of 1 to 3 years. These trainees have contributed immensely to the development of the museum. Unfortunately due to the economic downturn in Ireland many places on these government training schemes are being cut. The museum committee has recently been informed that the museum is one of the more likely areas to experience these cuts. If this is correct it will mean that the committee will probably not be in a position to open the museum to the public from November 2003 on. The committee would like to appeal to anyone with an interest in Dungarvan museum to get in touch with one of our 4 local politicians via e-mail or snail mail and draw to their attention the effect the impending cuts in community employment schemes will have on Dungarvan Museum. We would appeal to anyone who does get in touch with these individuals to be polite as we need their support to ensure that the Museum stays open. New Web-site Article ============================================== The following article can be found by clicking on exhibitions at www.dungarvanmuseum.org One of our museum members, Eddie Cantwell, recently discovered the earliest film footage found to date of Dungarvan Town. The film was discovered in the online archive of British Pathe. It portrays a group of British Soldiers in Grattan Square with two captured Sinn Fein activists. The film dates from the 11th of November 1920 and lasts for 1 minute 40 seconds. You can view it for free at the Dungarvan Museum website. ============================================== 4. Looking For Film Of Dungarvan And West Waterford ============================================== If any individual has material in their possession that may be of historical interest please let us know. All material donated is given on permanent loan to the museum and can be reclaimed by the donor at any time. Photographs and old cine film are of particular interest. Photographs will be copied and returned to the owner. If any list member has Cine film, 16mm film etc dating from the 60's or earlier of the town or surrounding area please get in touch. Cine-cameras were rare at the time and our major hope of getting footage is from the collection of a holidaying visitor. We will return any film we receive after having copied it. ============================================== 5. Museum Book Sale ============================================== The by now annual event that is the Museum Second Hand Book Sale takes place in Dungarvan Museum on the 17th, 18th and 19th of January 2003. More details on times etc will be in the local papers prior to the event. We have more second hand books than we have ever had before so if you live in the area come along and support our work. All the money goes to support the work of the museum. ============================================== 6. Contacting The Museum ============================================== All general queries can be directed to the museum at history@dungarvanmuseum.org If you have a comment or complaint about the web site you can contact william@deisedesign.com We are delighted to get all feedback, positive or negative. We endeavor to act on all suggestions that we get but please bear in mind that we are a voluntary organisation and it can take some time to answer queries.
