1. [WATERFORD] Co. Waterford to New Orleans in the 1850s - More PUblic Hospital Records Online
2. Hi Listers, I have joined the list temporarily again to tell you all that I just finished transcribing the public hospital records for New Orleans for March and April 1851. Each time I finish two months and post them, I will write again to remind you of this great resource for tracing your Irish ancestors to the US. I am writing to all the Irish county lists, so if you get multiple copies of this message, forgive me - just skip down below where I have copied all the names in the records from the particular county. In the past, I wrote to suggest that anyone researching their Irish roots should check these records of Charity Hospital in New Orleans. About 85% of the admissions were Irish, sometimes right off the boat thanks to a shipboard epidemic. During the late 1840s and early 1850s, the Irish poured into New Orleans by the tens of thousands - some to settle there permanently and many to travel to points further north up the river. I suggest you check our records, especially if your Irish ancestors settled in St. Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, or Iowa. As I have said before, the public hospital records are better than the census because of the information they give - the person's place of birth, how long he had been in New Orleans, where he had been before arriving in NO, etc. They are more hit and miss than the census records, but I have been contacted by several people who have successfully located their ancestors in these records. Here is the list of the patients from Co. Waterford admitted to Charity Hospital for March and April 1851. If you see anyone you'd like to check out further, please visit our web site at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chamar51.txt ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chaapr51.txt Our home page can be found at: Orleans Parish Archives Date of Admission, Date of Death, Date of Discharge, Ward, Name, Place of Birth, Occupation (if any), Age 3-Mar 9-Mar 34 Alice Megher 26 5-Mar -- 21-Mar 16 Michael Haily Laborer 44 6-Mar -- 8-Apr 38 Mary Campbell born Allen 35 10-Mar -- 13-Mar 14 John Navill Laborer 22 12-Mar -- 14-Apr 13 Martin Flemming 35 16-Mar -- 19-Mar 35 Michael Waters 5 yrs 18-Mar -- 18-Mar 36 Ellen Kelly born Ryan 23 18-Mar -- 24-Mar 18 John Cronican Boatsman 26 24-Mar -- 29-Mar 10 John Moore 25 26-Mar 4-Apr -- 16 Michael Haily Laborer 44 27-Mar -- 30-Mar 36 Hanorah Hays 24 3-Apr 8-Apr -- 19 Rodger McGrath Laborer 27 4-Apr -- 4-Apr 38 William Bigott*** 7 mos 4-Apr -- 6-Apr 31 Richard Pigott Farmer 36 4-Apr -- 6-Apr 38 Patrick Bigott*** 4 yrs 4-Apr -- 8-Apr 38 Fanny Bigott born Hardnett* 36 4-Apr -- 8-Apr 38 Fanny Bigott*** 5 yrs 4-Apr -- 14-Apr 25 James Broderick Laborer 33 5-Apr -- 14-Apr 15 Morris Phalin 32 7-Apr -- 8-Apr 29 James Power Laborer 40 7-Apr -- 13-Apr 37 Hanora Hays 24 9-Apr -- 16-Apr 24 Thos.
