I have traced my direct ancestry back to one Daniel SLATTERY, born supposedly in 1836 at Rathgormuck, Co Waterford, Ireland, and there the research has come to a halt! My Gt-Grandfather Daniel SLATTERY was a soldier in the 33rd Regiment of Foot. His army discharge papers (which I have) state that he was 17 11/12 years of age when he joined the Army at Cashel (Co Tipperary) on 17 August 1854. His Birthplace was stated, in his army papers, as Rathcormack, Co Waterford, Ireland (near Carrick-on-Suir) - so the closest I can come to that is Rathgormuck 4 miles from Carrick-on-Suir. When he eventually married Rebecca COLE in, England, his marriage certificate stated that he was the son of Daniel Slattery a stonemason and that his father was deceased. (I have their marriage certificate) Family naming patterns seem to be strong in this family. Daniel and Rebecca named their first sons George, Daniel, John, and William. George, the eldest son, named his first two sons Daniel George and William John. Now I know that Rebecca COLE was the daughter of George COLE and the grand-daughter of John COLE so it would appear to be logical to assume that Daniel and William may possibly be family names on the SLATTERY side of the family. I have no idea if Rathgormuck (or Rathgormack) is his correct birthplace. What I have been trying to do is hunt out any Slattery families who lived in Rathgormack, Co Waterford to see if my Daniel could possibily fit. I know that there was a Nicholas SLATTERY in Rathgormack, and that he died in 1867 aged 74. I know that Nicholas had a son William, who inherited the land and William died 1894 at aged 72 and William's son was Patrick but I have no idea, as yet, whether either Daniel can fit in. Finally, I know that there was a book published in 2001 "In the shade of the Comeraghs" compiled by John Duffan, Mossy Hunt, Margaret Hassett and Alice Phelan. I have been unable to acquire a copy or establish if any SLATTERY families are mentioned in it - it is one of the perils of living on the other side of the world!! Any help would be appreciated Regards John Slattery Invercargill New Zealand
