    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi to all. We have added two good articles to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. Yours Willie and Martin Whelan 1. New Articles Placed on the Web Site 2. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards 4. History Outreach Program Launched - Preserve Your Areas History 6. Contacting The Museum 7. Changing / Removing your email address for this mailing list ============================================== 1. New Website Articles ============================================== Portlaw A case study of Portlaw, County Waterford by Tina Foran. The history of Portlaw and the story of the Malcolmson family are inextricably linked. The rise of the Malcolmson empire was mirrored in the growth and development of Portlaw, and unfortunately the decline in the fortunes of this great family marked a decline in the fortunes of Portlaw. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project ============================================== Many out of print / out of copyright documents are in the Museum Archive. We would like to make these available on our web site but due to the constraints of staffing and time we aren't able to scan/ocr all of them. Following a suggestion from John Geary, one of our list members from America, we have had the idea of getting list members to help us scan text from these documents. Here is how we would hope the idea would work. We would post photocopied documents to a volunteer. They would scan them. They would e-mail us the scanned document. We would probably have to send a minimum of about 30 pages a time to make it worth the museums while. If you have the ability to scan documents and want to help the museum please send your e-mail address to william@deisedesign.com . We wouldn't be in a great hurry to get documents scanned. If they were sent back within a month we would be more than happy. A Word Of Caution: As a veteran of scanning documents :) I would like to caution all potential volunteers that it takes longer than you think (especially the proofreading), it is often times boring and you probably won't get the thanks you feel you deserve. However you would be making a very worthwhile contribution to preserving Waterford History. We are in discussion at the moment with the copyright holder of the Ardmore Journals. I am hopeful we will be given the go ahead to place them on the site. If not I have at least three major publications that we could place online. Anyone who helps with the scanning will get a credit on the site. ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards - Home Rule Street Selected ============================================== The Home Rule Street postcard is now available for sale at the museum price 1 Euro. ============================================== 4. History Outreach Program Launched ============================================== For some time I have been conscious that we have been very Dungarvan (and Abbeyside:) ) centric in the museum. The museum needs to take an active part in preserving the history of all of West Waterford. To this end we have launched a history outreach program. The following text will appear in the local papers next week. We are looking for volunteers in all the villages of West Waterford. If you are interested please get in touch. Preserving the history of your area is too important to leave it up to anyone else. Dungarvan Museum History Outreach Program Preserve The History Of Your Town Or Village Are you interested in preserving the history of Ardmore, Ballyduff, Ballymacarbry, Bunmahon, Cappoquin, Clashmore, Clonea, Fenor, Kilbrien, Kilmacthomas, Lismore, Portlaw, Rathgormack, Stradbally, Tallow & Villierstown. Dungarvan Museum are pleased to announce the launch of their local history outreach program. This program is designed to offer people with an interest in the history of their local area an opportunity to preserve this history before it is lost for good. You don’t need to be an academic to participate in this program all we are looking for in our volunteers is enthusiasm and an ability to commit a small amount of time to preserving Waterford’s history. Whether your interest is in collecting old photos to be copied or in writing historical articles there is a place for you in our program. What we hope to do Initially we hope to have a contact person or persons in each village that will collect old photographs, postcards, billheads and documents for scanning by museum staff. The original document can then be either donated to the museum or returned to the owner. The electronic copy will be added to our archives preserving it for posterity. What Dungarvan Museum can offer your area. We hope to preserve the historical records of all areas in West Waterford. At the moment these records are vanishing and being destroyed on an almost daily basis. Once we have a collection of photos assembled from an area we would hope to exhibit them as part of a temporary exhibition in Dungarvan Museum. We would also hope to have a travelling exhibition visit each of the villages displaying the donations from the area. This local archive would be a valuable resource for history teachers, school children, local history researchers and the general population of the area. What the museum can offer volunteers. · Advice on conserving photographs and documents. · Repair of damaged photographs. · Assistance in transferring old cine film to video. · Online publishing of articles, photographs and documents. · Assistance and guidance in research projects. If you are interested in joining this program please contact William Whelan at 086 2748377 Email: william@deisedesign.com or leave your details into Dungarvan Museum, St. Augustine Street, Dungarvan. ============================================== 5. Looking For Old Photographs & Film Of Dungarvan And West Waterford ============================================== If any individual has material in their possession that may be of historical interest please let us know. All material donated is given on permanent loan to the museum and can be reclaimed by the doner at any time. Photographs and old cine film are of particular interest. Photographs will be copied and returned to the owner. If any list member has Cine film, 16mm film etc dating from the 60's or earlier of the town or surrounding area please get in touch. Cine-cameras were rare at the time and our major hope of getting footage is from the collection of a holidaying visitor. We will return any film we receive after having copied it. ============================================== 6. Contacting The Museum ============================================== All general queries can be directed to the museum at history@dungarvanmuseum.org If you have a comment or complaint about the web site you can contact william@deisedesign.com We are delighted to get all feedback, positive or negative. We endeavor to act on all suggestions that we get but please bear in mind that we are a voluntary organisation and it can take some time to answer queries. ============================================== 7.
