    3. This is a dual posting to Tipperary and Waterford lists. Looking for HOGAN of Clonmel. Tipperary or Waterford. We have a transcription of a letter written in 1874 by a cousin, JOHN ROCHE (in Griffiths it is listed as ROACHE), who gave his address as: Croghclooney (Griffiths: CURRAGHCLONEY) Newcastle Clonmel Ireland He mentioned the Catholic church at "Four-Mile-Water" ( which is in Co. Waterford, near the village of Ballymacarbry) The old cemetery of Four-Mile-Water Church is Caoilshigan Cemetery (pronounced: kyle-sha-gone) has some Hogan gravestones from the 1700's & early 1800's. I have a cousin who briefly visited the cemetery but couldn't read all the gravestones. We are looking for the record of Patrick & Johanna Hogan. Does anyone know if there is a transcription of this cemetery? Is anyone familiar with this cemetery? Thanks, Deanna from San Carlos, California

Several other new features that would be too lengthy to describe. Thanks to all from this list who have donated their endeavors, and request anyone with birth, marriage, cemetery,or property records that they may consider sharing them via the website. 1. [WATERFORD] Dungarvan Museum News - The Fenian Rebellion
    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi to all. We have added two very interesting articles to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. Both cover the same subject matter. The articles deal with the trial of the Fenian crew of the Jacmel (Erins Hope) who landed at Helvic (outside Dungarvan) in an abortive attempt to stage a rebellion against British rule. A possible interesting postscript: At the moment we are researching whether Augustine E. Costello one of the leading (and most impressive) Fenians in the company is the same Augustine E. Costello who wrote Our Firemen: A History of the New York Fire Departments, Volunteer and Paid, from 1609 to 1887. This book went back into print last year in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy as a memorial to the fireman of NY. Both articles can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=2 If you have difficulty using the link click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. Apologies for some of the navigational problems on the site at the moment. We are in the middle of reorganising the site. We will tidy up these navigational glitches as soon as we can. If anyone has a historical /genealogical web site and they want to have a link between our site and theirs please get in touch. Yours Willie and Martin Whelan 1. New Articles Placed on the Web Site 2. Dungarvan Museum Online Shop Now Open 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards 4. Looking For Film Of Dungarvan And West Waterford 5. Contacting The Museum ============================================== 1. New Website Articles ============================================== The first article is by Sylvester Murray and tells the story of the American Fenian landing at Helvic, near Dungarvan in 1867, it was first published in Decies No. 9, The Journal Of The Old Waterford Society, September 1978. The second article is called 'The Cruise Of The Jacknell' A reproduction of an article published by Fenian sympathisers in 1868. The article deals with the trial of the Fenian crew of the Jacmel (Erins Hope) who landed at Helvic in an abortive attempt to stage a rebellion against British rule. Both articles can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=2 If you have difficulty using the link click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. The crew of the ship were Irish Americans many of whom had served in the American Civil War. At the trial the men used an interesting defence against the charge of treason felony levelled against them. They stated that as citizens of a foreign country (America) they could not be guilty of treason to the Crown. ============================================== 2. Dungarvan Museum Shop ============================================== With the cooperation of Powers bookshop we have put up a selection of Local history books for sale on the site. The titles include 'The Waterford Rebels of 1849', 'A History of Dungarvan Town and District', 'Them Golden Fields I Trod', 'History of Waterford City and County', 'Walking the Holy Ground in Ardmore and Lismore' and 'Waterford People - A Biographical Dictionary'. We can accept personal cheques drawn on major banks, postal orders and International money orders. Unfortunately we cannot accept Credit Card payments. All proceeds from books sold on the site go towards the maintenance of Dungarvan Museum Society a non-profit organisation. We also have a special offer that allows you to make a considerable saving on the shipping costs if you order all six books available for sale on the site at the same time. http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=14 ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards ============================================== To mark the launch of our summer exhibition 'Postcards Of County Waterford' featuring postcards from most of the major villages and towns of Waterford we have decided to publish the next in a series of limited edition postcards. We need to decide which postcard should be next in our reproduction postcard series and we want you to help us. We have selected 4 postcards from the turn of the century for you to choose from. We'd like you to vote for your favourite card by sending an email to william@deisedesign.com with the title of your favourite postcard in the subject line. You can view the cards by clicking on http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=115. You can also find them by typing postcard into the search box at the top of the site. Personal callers to the museum can select a card using a voting system that we have set up in the museum. The titles of the postcards in the competition are as follows : a. Bathing Place b. The Bandstand c. Meagher Street d. Home Rule Street Please note that the other three cards are not in the competition. ============================================== 4. Looking For Old Photographs & Film Of Dungarvan And West Waterford ============================================== If any individual has material in their possession that may be of historical interest please let us know. All material donated is given on permanent loan to the museum and can be reclaimed by the doner at any time. Photographs and old cine film are of particular interest. Photographs will be copied and returned to the owner. If any list member has Cine film, 16mm film etc dating from the 60's or earlier of the town or surrounding area please get in touch. Cine-cameras were rare at the time and our major hope of getting footage is from the collection of a holidaying visitor. We will return any film we receive after having copied it. ============================================== 5. Contacting The Museum ============================================== All general queries can be directed to the museum at history@dungarvanmuseum.org If you have a comment or complaint about the web site you can contact william@deisedesign.com We are delighted to get all feedback, positive or negative. 1. [WATERFORD] Co. Waterford to New Orleans in the 1850s - More PUblic Hospital Records Online
    2. Hi Listers, I have joined the list temporarily again to tell you all that I just finished transcribing the public hospital records for New Orleans for March and April 1851.  Each time I finish two months and post them, I will write again to remind you of this great resource for tracing your Irish ancestors to the US.  I am writing to all the Irish county lists, so if you get multiple copies of this message, forgive me - just skip down below where I have copied all the names in the records from the particular county. In the past, I wrote to suggest that anyone researching their Irish roots should check these records of Charity Hospital in New Orleans.  About 85% of the admissions were Irish, sometimes right off the boat thanks to a shipboard epidemic.  During the late 1840s and early 1850s, the Irish poured into New Orleans by the tens of thousands - some to settle there permanently and many to travel to points further north up the river.  I suggest you check our records, especially if your Irish ancestors settled in St. Louis, Louisville, Cincinnati, or Iowa. As I have said before, the public hospital records are better than the census because of the information they give - the person's place of birth, how long he had been in New Orleans, where he had been before arriving in NO, etc.  They are more hit and miss than the census records, but I have been contacted by several people who have successfully located their ancestors in these records. Here is the list of the patients from Co. Waterford admitted to Charity Hospital for March and April 1851.  If you see anyone you'd like to check out further, please visit our web site at: <A HREF="ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chamar51.txt">ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chamar51.txt</A> <A HREF="ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chaapr51.txt">ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chaapr51.txt</A>  Our home page can be found at: <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.htm">Orleans Parish Archives</A> Date of Admission, Date of Death, Date of Discharge, Ward, Name, Place of Birth, Occupation (if any), Age 3-Mar 9-Mar 34 Alice Megher 26 5-Mar -- 21-Mar 16 Michael Haily Laborer 44 6-Mar -- 8-Apr 38 Mary Campbell born Allen 35 10-Mar -- 13-Mar 14 John Navill Laborer 22 12-Mar -- 14-Apr 13 Martin Flemming 35 16-Mar -- 19-Mar 35 Michael Waters 5 yrs 18-Mar -- 18-Mar 36 Ellen Kelly born Ryan 23 18-Mar -- 24-Mar 18 John Cronican Boatsman 26 24-Mar -- 29-Mar 10 John Moore 25 26-Mar 4-Apr -- 16 Michael Haily Laborer 44 27-Mar -- 30-Mar 36 Hanorah Hays 24 3-Apr 8-Apr -- 19 Rodger McGrath Laborer 27 4-Apr -- 4-Apr 38 William Bigott*** 7 mos 4-Apr -- 6-Apr 31 Richard Pigott Farmer 36 4-Apr -- 6-Apr 38 Patrick Bigott*** 4 yrs 4-Apr -- 8-Apr 38 Fanny Bigott born Hardnett* 36 4-Apr -- 8-Apr 38 Fanny Bigott*** 5 yrs 4-Apr -- 14-Apr 25 James Broderick Laborer 33 5-Apr -- 14-Apr 15 Morris Phalin 32 7-Apr -- 8-Apr 29 James Power Laborer 40 7-Apr -- 13-Apr 37 Hanora Hays 24 9-Apr -- 16-Apr 24 Thos. 1. [WATERFORD] O'Briens in Kilkenny and Waterford
    2. Gerald Duffy
    3. My great grandparents were James O’Brien and Mary O’Brien (her maiden name and her married name). They were probably born in County Cork around 1810 to 1820 or so. They had 10 daughters and one son. We know the names of most of them: Ellen and Catherine were probably born in County Cork by around 1847. Then the following were born and Baptized in Ferrybank and Rockshire and Riverview in the area just North of the River Suir across the river from Waterford City: Mary (1849), Anastatia (1851), John (1853), Anne (1858, but she died shortly thereafter), Anne (1860), and Johanna (1863). Josephine was the last child and her record was not found in the Ferrybank areas mentioned above. There were two other girls but we don’t know their names. The family probably moved from Cork to Ferrybank to get work during the famine. The Ferrybank area is within the Roman Catholic Parish of Slieverue in County Kilkenny and within the civil parish of Kilculliheen in County Waterford. The names of sponsors for the Baptisms listed above were: Michael Wall, Ellen Costelloe, Thomas Corcoran, Mary Walsh, John Baccus, Bridget Shea, Robert Murphy, Mary Hussey, Johanna Murphy, John Power, James Hayden and Bridget Higgins. All of these O'Briens settled in Troy, NY. I would appreciate input from any that have information on any of these families or on the area around Ferrybank circa 1850 to 1870. My heartfelt thanks goes out to Mary Flood and her cohorts at the Kilkenny Archaeological Society who did a fantastic job on my Kilkenny research. I would recommend them strongly for research, cost and timeliness. Gerry Duffy Palos Park, IL

    2. Would anyone have any thoughts re: Tithe applotments or Tenant Lists which might be on line for County Waterford? Is the Waterford Heritage Survey a place for info from them if available? Are they at the National Archives in Dublin? I am interested in Ballyduff, Parish of Lismore; Ardmore and Clashmore. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood Ohio

    2. I don't know the proximity of Tremore and Cappoquin. This Foley married Michael J. Colbert and she died in 1898 in Tremore, Waterford, Ireland. Joanne
