jasonparent@sympatico.ca I don't know that anything is wrong, but the above address subscribed to dozens of lists two days ago, and over yesterday and today has tried to unsubscribe from those lists, plus other lists apparently not on. I would just suggest caution if you see this email address cross your screen, but if legitimate, I'll stop worrying about it. As list admins we have much to worry about.<GRIN> Have a great week all. Hi to all. We have added two good articles to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. Yours Willie and Martin Whelan 1. New Articles Placed on the Web Site 2. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards 4. History Outreach Program Launched - Preserve Your Areas History 6. Contacting The Museum 7. Changing / Removing your email address for this mailing list ============================================== 1. New Website Articles ============================================== Portlaw A case study of Portlaw, County Waterford by Tina Foran. The history of Portlaw and the story of the Malcolmson family are inextricably linked. The rise of the Malcolmson empire was mirrored in the growth and development of Portlaw, and unfortunately the decline in the fortunes of this great family marked a decline in the fortunes of Portlaw. If you have difficulty using the link http://dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=139 visit www.dungarvanmuseum.org click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. 1777 Road Maps 1777 road maps of West Waterford from George Taylor and Andrew Skinner's 'Maps of The Roads of Ireland' Surveyed in 1777 and published for the authors on the 14th November 1778 in London. If you have difficulty using the link http://dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=138 visit www.dungarvanmuseum.org click on downloads at the top of the home page and then click on 1777 Road Maps Of West Waterford. ============================================== 2. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project ============================================== Many out of print / out of copyright documents are in the Museum Archive. We would like to make these available on our web site but due to the constraints of staffing and time we aren't able to scan/ocr all of them. Following a suggestion from John Geary, one of our list members from America, we have had the idea of getting list members to help us scan text from these documents. Here is how we would hope the idea would work. We would post photocopied documents to a volunteer. They would scan them. They would e-mail us the scanned document. We would probably have to send a minimum of about 30 pages a time to make it worth the museums while. If you have the ability to scan documents and want to help the museum please send your e-mail address to william@deisedesign.com . We wouldn't be in a great hurry to get documents scanned. If they were sent back within a month we would be more than happy. A Word Of Caution: As a veteran of scanning documents :) I would like to caution all potential volunteers that it takes longer than you think (especially the proofreading), it is often times boring and you probably won't get the thanks you feel you deserve. However you would be making a very worthwhile contribution to preserving Waterford History. We are in discussion at the moment with the copyright holder of the Ardmore Journals. I am hopeful we will be given the go ahead to place them on the site. If not I have at least three major publications that we could place online. Anyone who helps with the scanning will get a credit on the site. ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards - Home Rule Street Selected ============================================== The Home Rule Street postcard is now available for sale at the museum price 1 Euro. ============================================== 4. History Outreach Program Launched ============================================== For some time I have been conscious that we have been very Dungarvan (and Abbeyside:) ) centric in the museum. The museum needs to take an active part in preserving the history of all of West Waterford. To this end we have launched a history outreach program. The following text will appear in the local papers next week. We are looking for volunteers in all the villages of West Waterford. If you are interested please get in touch. Preserving the history of your area is too important to leave it up to anyone else. Dungarvan Museum History Outreach Program Preserve The History Of Your Town Or Village Are you interested in preserving the history of Ardmore, Ballyduff, Ballymacarbry, Bunmahon, Cappoquin, Clashmore, Clonea, Fenor, Kilbrien, Kilmacthomas, Lismore, Portlaw, Rathgormack, Stradbally, Tallow & Villierstown. Dungarvan Museum are pleased to announce the launch of their local history outreach program. This program is designed to offer people with an interest in the history of their local area an opportunity to preserve this history before it is lost for good. You dont need to be an academic to participate in this program all we are looking for in our volunteers is enthusiasm and an ability to commit a small amount of time to preserving Waterfords history. Whether your interest is in collecting old photos to be copied or in writing historical articles there is a place for you in our program. What we hope to do Initially we hope to have a contact person or persons in each village that will collect old photographs, postcards, billheads and documents for scanning by museum staff. The original document can then be either donated to the museum or returned to the owner. The electronic copy will be added to our archives preserving it for posterity. What Dungarvan Museum can offer your area. We hope to preserve the historical records of all areas in West Waterford. At the moment these records are vanishing and being destroyed on an almost daily basis. Once we have a collection of photos assembled from an area we would hope to exhibit them as part of a temporary exhibition in Dungarvan Museum. We would also hope to have a travelling exhibition visit each of the villages displaying the donations from the area. This local archive would be a valuable resource for history teachers, school children, local history researchers and the general population of the area. What the museum can offer volunteers. · Advice on conserving photographs and documents. · Repair of damaged photographs. · Assistance in transferring old cine film to video. · Online publishing of articles, photographs and documents. · Assistance and guidance in research projects. If you are interested in joining this program please contact William Whelan at 086 2748377 Email: william@deisedesign.com or leave your details into Dungarvan Museum, St. Augustine Street, Dungarvan. ============================================== 5. Looking For Old Photographs & Film Of Dungarvan And West Waterford ============================================== If any individual has material in their possession that may be of historical interest please let us know. All material donated is given on permanent loan to the museum and can be reclaimed by the doner at any time. Photographs and old cine film are of particular interest. Photographs will be copied and returned to the owner. If any list member has Cine film, 16mm film etc dating from the 60's or earlier of the town or surrounding area please get in touch. Cine-cameras were rare at the time and our major hope of getting footage is from the collection of a holidaying visitor. We will return any film we receive after having copied it. ============================================== 6. Contacting The Museum ============================================== All general queries can be directed to the museum at history@dungarvanmuseum.org If you have a comment or complaint about the web site you can contact william@deisedesign.com We are delighted to get all feedback, positive or negative. We endeavor to act on all suggestions that we get but please bear in mind that we are a voluntary organisation and it can take some time to answer queries. ============================================== 7. G'day everyone, I am seeking clues to find my g-g-grandmother Mary Margaret Jackson born in "Waterford" aro 1850 -1854. Not sure if the area is the town or county of Waterford. Fathers name was Mark Jackson. Mother unknown at this stage. Mary married Thomas Yeo in Kent, England in 1874 (age Full). The only clue to Mary's origins come from the 1901 census which indicate Waterford Ireland as the place of birth. Would appreciate any guidance to enable me to pursue the Irish origins of this family. Thanks and Regards, Bill Bailey. Melb. Oz.
I have added a list of Church of Ireland Parishes available at the Representative Church Library in Dublin. Some of these will likely be in the National Archives also. If you are interested the list is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat2/ County Waterford Genealogy (IGP) Christina
I was doing some searching on the IGI online and found lots of new birth records added from the 1870's. I found a friend's ancestor and a sister in Tipperary and two more DEVINES in my husband's Longford family that I had not known about. If you think you had someone born in Ireland in this time frame it would be worth checking out. Be sure to choose the *International Genealogical Index. Then you can limit your search to a county if you wish. www.familysearch.org Christina

Hi to all. We have added a really good article to the museum site www.dungarvanmuseum.org this week. Also in the mail is details of our new History Outreach Program. The program may have something to offer you. Details of the program can be read below. Apologies for the lengthy nature of this email. Apologies also for some of the navigational problems on the site at the moment. We are in the middle of reorganising the site. We will tidy up these navigational glitches as soon as we can. New Website Articles ============================================== A wonderfully well written autobiographical article by David Walsh on the old railway station in the small West Waterford town of Cappoquin on any sultry summers evening in the mid-1960s as seen through the eyes of a child. On this site sometimes we focus overmuch on the facts of history this article redresses the balance and gives an insight into what it felt like to live in Cappoquin in the 1960's. My thanks to David Walsh for sharing the article with the museum. The article can be found at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=137&pagenum=1 If you have difficulty using the link visit www.dungarvanmuseum.org click on exhibitions at the top of the home page and then click on historical articles. ============================================== 2. Dungarvan Museum Shop ============================================== With the cooperation of Powers bookshop we have put up a selection of Local history books for sale on the site. The titles include 'The Waterford Rebels of 1849', 'A History of Dungarvan Town and District', 'Them Golden Fields I Trod', 'History of Waterford City and County', 'Walking the Holy Ground in Ardmore and Lismore' and 'Waterford People - A Biographical Dictionary'. We can accept personal cheques drawn on major banks, postal orders and International money orders. Unfortunately we cannot accept Credit Card payments. All proceeds from books sold on the site go towards the maintenance of Dungarvan Museum Society a non-profit organisation. We also have a special offer that allows you to make a considerable saving on the shipping costs if you order all six books available for sale on the site at the same time. http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?cat_id=14 ============================================== 3. Dungarvan Museum Reproduction Postcards - Home Rule Street Selected ============================================== The postcard of Home Rule Street, Abbeyside has been selected as the next in our series of postcard reproductions. You can view the postcard at http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=115&pagenum=7 Thanks to all who voted for the postcard of your choice. In second place (for the second time) was Bathing Place http://www.dungarvanmuseum.org/index.cgi?art_id=115&pagenum=2 Martin and I have had a bit of a discussion and it is possible that we will put it to the committee that we will reproduce the Bathing Place image as the last in our series of postcard images from turn of the century Dungarvan. Expect to see the Home Rule Street postcard for sale in the museum in 6 weeks time. Once the set of 4 is complete we will look at making them available to our overseas readers. We are conscious of the large contribution made to preserving Dungarvans history by our overseas readers and members and we don't wish to disenfranchise them if at all possible :). ============================================== 4. Hi All, My earliest Waterford ancestor was Ellen GREEN who came out to Australia on the 'Maria', in 1850. She was a Famine Orphan. her mother was Margaret GREENWOOD and she may have been born in Tipperary. She was born about 1834. on the ship's list of passengers it says she came from Abbey, Waterford. She was sent to Bathurst, NSW and must have met her husband there, Henry OSBORNE, and they married in 1853. I haven't found out anything more about her in Ireland. Regards, Una Greco in the Southern Highlands of NSW, OZ. ----- Original Message ----- From: Christina Hunt <Ninah@carolina.rr.com> To: <IRL-WATERFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2003 11:59 PM Subject: [WATERFORD] Who is... > Your earliest known Waterford ancestor? > Tell us what you know about him or her. > > Regards, > Christina > > ______________________________
Dear Listers, Last Saturday I received from the GRO in Dublin a copy of the marriage certificate for my paternal Grandfather. For the first time I now have some evidence that he was in Waterford during part of his life. I am now looking for any information about my paternal grandfather, George Cullen, who was born in about 1881. At the time of his marriage he gave his address as 2 Henry Street Terrace, Waterford. Can anybody confirm where this is and whether it still exists? On his marriage certificate he gives the name of his father as George Cullen. Does any lister have a George Cullen, or 2, in their family tree? If anyone has access to the 1911 Census can they look to see who was living at 2 Henry Street Terrace, Waterford. I would be grateful for any other bits of information, no matter how trivial or circumspect in nature. Regards, Phil Cullen in Birmingham, England
Hello list, I've updated my website with not only my own family information, but also some data that I've put together to hopefully help others. Here's what you'll find. 1. Of course my family info with copies of documents such as those that I found at the National Archives in DC in my great great grandfather Louis KIRCHER's (born in Weinsberg, Wurttemberg) Civil War Pension files. Included in those papers are sworn statements made by friends to aid in the pension eligibility research. 2. I own a few census index cds and have full access to ancestry.com/ancestry.co.uk and am willing to do look ups. Just click on the census image on my home page and it will take you to a page where there are directions to follow. Please follow them or I will not be able to answer your request. 3. Some inscriptions that I found on tombstones that were near those of my own family members in Fernwood Cemetery just outside of Philadelphia, PA. 4. The Last Wills of 4 WEINBERG/VINEYARD/VINYARD ancestors. They came from Lavern, Westphalia, Prussia to Cumberland County, New Jersey. 5. Four partial Ships' Lists all Liverpool, England to Philadelphia, PA. 1907 - 1910. Not all passengers were from England, so look them over for your ancestral names. 6. I transcribed 3 pages from the Philadelphia, PA. Orphan's Court Marriage Records Index 1885 - 1916. Many names there! 7. I put some old unknown photos from all over the world from ebay on my site in hopes that someone might find a relative there. If interested, you should be able to just right click on the enlarged photo and then left click on "Save Picture As". 8. Many fantastic useful free links. There are a few that provide limited access but still give you enough free information to start out with. I update the links monthly and mark new ones as NEW with bright red letters that you can not miss. 9. Photos of headstones at Fernwood Cemetery coming soon. the URL is... http://hometown.aol.com/ella12866/index.html Some of you might find accessing this URL a little easier, but the graphics don't line up right... http://members.aol.com/ella12866/index.html If you should have trouble accessing the page just please continue to try again later. It just means that a lot of people are trying to access it and I guess AOL can't handle the overload. I am sending this out to all of the lists that I belong to. I swear that I am giving the correct URL. Please forgive my multiple postings, but I think it's important that I let as many people know about my site as humanly possible. Please pass it on to everyone you know who is interested in genealogy who might be on a list that by some small miracle I don't belong to. There is definitely something there for everyone from beginner to expert. If you're reading this from a specific surname mailing list and you can't find the surname in any of the documents/transcriptions or family trees, send me an email. Most likely that means that the surname is in my family tree but just hasn't found a spot on my website yet. If you're reading this post off of a Geographic mailing list and no one on my website is from that area, then check the ships' lists for country/state/city of origin or final destination. If you don't find anything there, then again, email me. I have ancestors from there who didn't make it on my website yet. Happy hunting and good luck, Ella
Hi to all list members. I am pleased to announce the launch of the beta version of Waterford County Library's new web site www.waterfordcountylibrary.ie . Please note that the site is not entirely finished yet and some minor adjustments need to be made to it. We would like list members to get in touch with Waterford County Library Service email rneylin@waterfordcoco.ie and Deise Design email william@deisedesign.com with any observations they would like to make about the new site. We are interested in improving the site so please feel free to make critical comments if you wish. Several of the Library staff have worked on this (ongoing) project for over 10 years; by providing feedback you will demonstrate to Waterford County Council the value of the project and ensure it's continued support for the project. The majority of the work on this project was done by Library Staff who compiled the databases over many years. In particular I would like to mention Donal Brady Waterford County Librarian, Eddie Byrne, Rachel Neylin, Ger Croughan & Noleene Osbourne. Apologies to any Library staff I may have inadvertently missed. Willie Whelan Deise Design What's new about the site:- The new site finally has a database interface that works in pretty much all browsers. I appreciate the difficulties that the previous interface on the Waterford County Council site caused users. This was beyond the control of the Library service and Deise Design. Some new features to look out for on the site include:- · Improved help in how to search the database · Visually Impaired Site - This site is a duplicate of the main site and is designed to be used by those who are blind (using a braille browser) or visually impaired. Unfortunately the databases do not have this functionality. I believe this is the first local authority site in the country to feature a visually impaired module. This module will shortly be deployed on the updated County Council site. · Question Of The Day - As yet this consists of one question. As patrons make requests of the museum staff this section will be added to. · View All recently added articles - Clicking on this link brings up all articles added in the last 30 days. Useful for regular visitors to the site. · Mailing List - Enter your email address to join the Waterford County Library Mailing List and receive email on the latest County Library news and notification when updates are made to the website. The following databases which were formerly part of the Waterford County Council web site have been moved to the library site. Library Catalogue The Library Catalogue is the main point of access to resources held by Waterford County Library. You can search and locate books, journals, maps, photographs, computer files and CD's. Catalogue records provide information about the item searched for, indicating what it contains and where it is located. Trade Directories Historical Trade Directories listing the business and professional people of an area are a core resource for local historians and genealogists. Death Registers Records of all deaths registered in Co. Waterford from January 1st 1864 until December 31st 1901. The Great War : Waterford Dead A database of Waterford people who died in World War One Griffith's Valuation Where people lived and what property they held in County Waterford, 1848 - 1864. Grave Memorials Inscriptions from the headstones of County Waterford graveyards. Community Information Information on community groups, educational institutions, business services, tourism, leisure, administrative, arts and cultural organizations in Waterford City and County. Current Register of Electors The names and addresses of those eligible to vote. Deise Design - Web Site Design & Internet Consultancy www.deisedesign.com 086 2748377

My Walsh's were from nearby Clonanav, other family members also lived close by in; Clogheen, Boolabrien Lower, Boolabrien Upper, Curraheenavoher. I will look up the Griffiths in those areas to see if any Hogan's lived in those locations. Willie, Thanks for telling us about this. It sounds exciting. The old site is gorgeous looking but it would be easy to miss all the Genealogical data that is there. Can't wait to see the new site! Hi To all on the list. I have recently seen some mentions of both the Waterford County Council web site and the new County Library web site on the list. It wasn't my intention to post any message on these sites as yet but seeing as some list members have observed the changes I may as well make a few comments. Firstly both of the sites are undergoing major development. The council site will have a more user friendly interface that will make it more easily read by the visually impaired and it should feature more intuitive navigation. The databases on the council site that are of interest to the genealogist are being transferred to the new County Library site. The Library site has not officially launched yet and is still being worked on (That's why I haven't posted the URL :) ) We have some load and speed issues with the server which slows the site if it gets a lot of visitors. The site will launch very shortly at which point I will e-mail the lists. I am sure everyone will be glad to hear that the java applet interface for the databases has disappeared and been replaced with something that actually works in pretty much all browsers. The County Library site will also feature search tips and a more detailed help to enable people to search the databases efficiently. Once the site launches we will be looking to the community to critique it and suggest how we can improve it. Hope this information is of some use. I will post again shortly when the sites launch with a more detailed description of the changes.
