    1. Re: [WATERFORD] ROLL CALL <**HEARN / PHELAN **>
    2. Krisiain
    3. Hi there I'm interested in HEARN from Kilfarassy, (Fenor? or poss Islandikane), Tramore, and also PHELAN, Annestown. Martin Hearn married Ellen Phelan in the mid 1800s and had three daughters who emigrated to New Zealand probably in the 1890s. At least one son stayed behind as there were apparently descendants still living at Kilfarassey in the 1960s. Known children are (birth dates have been worked back from the - probably unreliable - ages given at death by relatives): 1. Anastatia (Anastasia) Hearn, poss born 1870-1871 She married Timothy O'BRIEN in NZ, and died in 1927 in Wellington, NZ. 2 Delia (Bridget?) Hearn, poss born post 1880? She married Mick O'SULLIVAN in NZ in 1897, and died in 1945 in Wellington, NZ 3 Annie Hearn, poss born: Cir 1883 She married Thomas Martin CONDON in NZ and died in 1919 in Wellington, NZ 4 Son 1 Hearn No details known; I speculate he might have been a Martin, based purely on naming patterns. A Nicholas HEARN from Kilfarassey emigrated to New Zealand about the same time as the sisters but a local researcher says there is no known connection in his family tree. I know nothing at all about the PHELAN family of Ellen, except their farm was near Annestown; and as her name is so common the available searching from NZ has been fruitless. I'd be grateful for any assistance/information about any of these people. Many thanks Christine

    2. Kristine at kpw@vantagetech.com writes: << Finally, can anyone tell me precisely where Shanbally and Ballyvecane are? >> Kristine, There is a pair of Ballyvecane townlands, Upper and Lower, in Lismore & Mocollop civil parish about 2 miles WSW of Lismore town and lying between the River Blackwater and the N 72 road (actually, a small piece of the Upper townland appears to continue a bit to the south of the highway). Shanbally townland - one of four in the county, but the only one which is near Ballyvecane - is in the same civil parish and forms the easternmost edge of Cappoquin town. It is about 6 miles from the Ballyvecane townlands. Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts

    3. Hi Mary, I have Timothy O'Rourke from Ballysaggert near Cappoquin. a sister Mary O'Rourke married a Costello; half brother Bartholomew. Timmy born circa 1903 met and married Geraldine Prendergast in NYC but from Cappoquin...she was my grandmother's twin sister (they were born in NYC but raised from infancy in Lismore after their mother (Bridie O'Donnell of Lismore died NYC 1909) Timmy O'Rourke and Geraldine Prendergast named first son Tommy so I suspect that could be Timmy's father's name but Geraldine's father was Gerald and her grandfather who raised her in Cappoquin was Thomas Prendergast (gm Mary Coleman) so I will have to check with my aunt what Timmy O'Rourke's parents names were...have pictures of the O'Rourke farm Ballysaggert just few miles from Cappoquin from what I understand. 1. [WATERFORD] WALSH
    2. Joanne Krause
    3. PATRICK WALSH and JANE CARLETON had three children born in Ireland. The only record I have of any of them is the Baptism of JOHANNA WALSH on 7 Nov 1865 in Dungarvan. The other two children were CHRISTOPHER b. abt 1861, and MARY J. b. abt 1863. The family then moved on to Liverpool, England where CATHERINE b. abt 1871, ELLEN b abt 1872, and twins MARGARET and PATRICK b abt 1876 joined them. Their address in Liverpool was 5 Menai Street, and Patrick, the father, was a dock labourer. He died abt 1901. Does anyone have any further information about this family? I believe the senior PATRICK could be the twin brother of my ggrandmother, JOHANNA WALSH BOYLE, b. abt 1834. They were children of (yet another) PATRICK WALSH and MARY and lived in Cloughjordan, Co.Tipperary. Hopefully, Joanne

    1. [WATERFORD] ROLL CALL [SLATTERY]
    2. John Slattery
    3. I have traced my direct ancestry back to one Daniel SLATTERY, born supposedly in 1836 at Rathgormuck, Co Waterford, Ireland, and there the research has come to a halt! My Gt-Grandfather Daniel SLATTERY was a soldier in the 33rd Regiment of Foot. His army discharge papers (which I have) state that he was 17 11/12 years of age when he joined the Army at Cashel (Co Tipperary) on 17 August 1854. His Birthplace was stated, in his army papers, as Rathcormack, Co Waterford, Ireland (near Carrick-on-Suir) - so the closest I can come to that is Rathgormuck 4 miles from Carrick-on-Suir. When he eventually married Rebecca COLE in, England, his marriage certificate stated that he was the son of Daniel Slattery a stonemason and that his father was deceased. (I have their marriage certificate) Family naming patterns seem to be strong in this family. Daniel and Rebecca named their first sons George, Daniel, John, and William. George, the eldest son, named his first two sons Daniel George and William John. Now I know that Rebecca COLE was the daughter of George COLE and the grand-daughter of John COLE so it would appear to be logical to assume that Daniel and William may possibly be family names on the SLATTERY side of the family. I have no idea if Rathgormuck (or Rathgormack) is his correct birthplace. What I have been trying to do is hunt out any Slattery families who lived in Rathgormack, Co Waterford to see if my Daniel could possibily fit. I know that there was a Nicholas SLATTERY in Rathgormack, and that he died in 1867 aged 74. I know that Nicholas had a son William, who inherited the land and William died 1894 at aged 72 and William's son was Patrick but I have no idea, as yet, whether either Daniel can fit in. Finally, I know that there was a book published in 2001 "In the shade of the Comeraghs" compiled by John Duffan, Mossy Hunt, Margaret Hassett and Alice Phelan. I have been unable to acquire a copy or establish if any SLATTERY families are mentioned in it - it is one of the perils of living on the other side of the world!! Any help would be appreciated Regards John Slattery Invercargill New Zealand
