    1. [WATERFORD] 1824 Pigot Directory - Cappoquin
    2. Christina Hunt
    3. I have a film containing the 1824 Pigot Directory of Ireland. I hope we can add some of the Waterford pages while I have the film here. The copies are very dark and parts are hard to read. ................................................ CAPPOQUIN, A market, post and fair town in the county of Waterford, is distant 105 miles south by west of Dublin, and pleasantly situated on the river Blackwater, over which there is a wooden bridge. Here are the remains of an old castle, commanding a most extensive prospect over the adjacent county. The date of its erection is not ascertained, but its construction is by tradition ascribed to the Fitzgerald family, proverbially disaffected; in the rebellion of the year 1641. it was defended by an English garrison commanded by Captain Hugh CROKER, acting under the authority of the Earl of Cork. The church is a very neat structure, situated in conjunction with the Roman Catholic chapel, which is very spacious. Cappoquin, though a hamlet in the parish of Lismore, is a post town. Considerable business is done in the cora_ trade, the river Blackwater being navigable for boats, which ply between here and Youghal. There are two weekly markets, on Wednesday and Saturday, and two annual fairs, on the 17th of March and the 5th of July. *The order of info is last name, first name (& esq.) occupation if different from the heading and Place of residence or business. 3. Cappoquin, nearby Carrigeen, and townlands Garraunfadda and Killahalla were home bases of my husband's family: Maurice Flynn and other Flynns. My husband's mother Teresa Flynn and 6 siblings were orphaned about 1900 and left Killahalla - to come to San Francisco. Anyone else researching Flynns from this area? If so, please contact me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christina Hunt" <Ninah@carolina.rr.com> To: <IRL-WATERFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2003 1:08 PM Subject: [WATERFORD] 1824 Pigot Directory - Cappoquin > I have a film containing the 1824 Pigot Directory of Ireland. 1. [WATERFORD] More Public Hospital Records from New Orleans Are Now Online!
    2. Hi Listers, I am joining the list again temporarily to tell you that I have completed the admission records for the public hospital (Charity Hospital) for the months of July and August 1851 in New Orleans.  As I have told the list on previous occasions, New Orleans was one of the largest points of entry for the Irish into the United States.  Because of its location on the Mississippi River, the Irish who came to the US through the Port of New Orleans had access to cities further upriver, and cities on the Ohio and Missouri Rivers, such as St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Louisville. The public hospital admissions were mainly Irish who could not afford to pay for private medical care.  July and August were especially bad.  At that time, New Orleans was little more than a large swamp, and the summer months with all the rain an humidity were ideal for breeding mosquitos which carried many types of diseases.  In fact, many of the Irish were imported to New Orleans in the mid 1800s to drain the swamps to provide more habitable land.  A slave was worth money, so the worthless Irish were used by the thousans instead.  Many worked digging drainage canals filled with mosquitos - some were buried into the walls of the canals right where they dropped dead. In the past, I have posted the names of the patients from this county on this list, just in case anyone sees someone they recognize.  In my opinion, these hospital lists are some of the most uner-appreciate sources of genealogical information there are. If you see someone on the list you'd like to know more about, please visit the web sites for July and August 1851 on the Orleans Parish (New Orleans) rootsweb site at: <A HREF="ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chajul51.txt">ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chajul51.txt</A> and <A HREF="ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chaaug51.txt">ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/charityhos/chaaug51.txt</A> If these links stretch over two lines, you will have to type them into your browser by hand.  Else, you could go to the homepage and follow the links under hospital records.  The homepage is located at: <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.htm">Orleans Parish Archives</A> or <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.htm">http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/orleans.htm</A> If the links don't work, please type them in by hand into your browser. Here are the names from Co. Waterford in the July and August 1851 Charity Hospital admission records for New Orleans.  Please ignore any references to See such and such a page - or the marks *^~ by some of the names.  The former just mean the person was in the hospital at some earlier time, and you should check the records for more info on the earlier date.  The latter marks are footnotes relating to the admission. 1. [WATERFORD] Dungarvan Museum New Web Site Launched
    2. William Whelan
    3. Hi We have finally got the new museum web site ready. It should much easier to navigate. We would be really interested in getting feedback on the changes so please feel free to e-mail us with your comments. 1. New Museum Web Site Launched 2. Donate Money On-line To Dungarvan Museum 3. Recent Donations and Events 4. New Articles Placed on the Web Site 5. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project 6. Changing Email address for this mailing list ============================================== 1. New Museum Web Site Launched ============================================== Dungarvan Museum County Waterford have revamped and rebuilt their award winning web site www.dungarvanmuseum.org . As part of their commitment to meeting the needs of all of the community, the site now includes a version of the site for the visually impaired. People who suffer from various visual impairments (including colour blindness) and blind people (using a Braille browser to speak the sites content to them) can now enjoy 2500 pages of content on the history of Dungarvan and County Waterford. In 2002 the web site was short-listed among the top five research museum web sites in the world at the sixth annual Museums and the Web conference in Boston. It followed up this success by being awarded Best Publication for Visitors at the Irish Museum Of The Year Awards 2002, in the process beating stiff competition from the The National Museum Of Ireland, The National Gallery Of Ireland and The Ulster Museum. In 2003 the museum has focused on improving accessibility and navigation on the web site for visitors. The site now meets International web content accessibility guidelines. In addition, two major features have been added to the site to aid people in finding the content they are looking for. Web sites with large quantities of content have difficulty in 'pushing' all of the content that is contained on the site to a visitor. The information a visitor requires may be buried somewhere on the site but they just can't find it. To enhance the visitor experience the museum has added a related articles feature. If a person visits the site to access an article on the War Of Independence they will have further reading recommended to them. A similar system of 'Related Articles' is used on major news sites like CNN, BBC etc. The ability to select articles by time period has also been introduced. Now you can click on a time line or select the era from a drop down menu that interests you and all articles relating to that period will be listed. Work has also been undertaken on ensuring that the site can grow and expand into the future. Work is in progress constructing a content tree for the content management system powering the site. This will enable the web site editors to add extensive additional depth to the site. In time the site will be able to contain tens of thousands of pages of content. This content tree will also allow editors better manage categories / sub categories and automatically transfer entire branches of the tree creating a new category for content if the need arises. ============================================== 2. Donate Money Online To Dungarvan Museum ============================================== Dungarvan Museum is a non profit voluntary museum (even the web site was designed for free by Déise Design). The local council generously provides us with a home for the museum free of charge. The running costs of the museum are partly met by the local council but a large proportion of the finance we need to run the museum has to be raised by voluntary effort (book sales and raffles etc.). We would be grateful for any financial donation large or small to help us with our work. We can now accept credit card donations on-line using Paypal. Donations received in this way are used exclusively to purchase artifacts in on-line auctions. You can decide the amount you wish to donate (it can be a small as 1 or 2 euros or dollars), it will be appreciated. ============================================== 3. Recent Donations and Events ============================================== The History Outreach Program is starting to produce material from around the West of the County. We have recently received some nice material from the Aglish / Clashmore area. Also we have had donated a nice short history of Tallow that will appear on this web site in a month or so. ============================================== 4. New Web-site Articles ============================================== We have added several new articles to the web site www.dungarvanmuseum.org . Four new biographical articles have been added to the web site People in Waterford History - 20th Century People in Waterford History - 19th Century People in Waterford History - 18th Century People in Waterford History - 17th Century The Struggle For Freedom In West Waterford A lecture on the War Of Independence and Civil War in Waterford delivered by Domnall O'Faoláin in 1966. Domnall was the son of Commandant Pax Whelan C/O of Waterford No. 2 Brigade I.R.A. during the War Of Independence. Please bear in mind that this article is written from a Republican perspective. We feel it is important to place these articles online regardless of the viewpoint that they are written from. The fact that Dungarvan Museum publishes an article does not indicate that we support the views in the article. ============================================== 5. Volunteers Needed For Scanning Project ============================================== [The scanning project has not moved as quickly as we had hoped although we are making progress. I will be in touch with volunteers in the next week with details of the project.] Many out of print / out of copyright documents are in the Museum Archive. We would like to make these available on our web site but due to the constraints of staffing and time we aren't able to scan/ocr all of them. Following a suggestion from John Geary, one of our list members from America, we have had the idea of getting list members to help us scan text from these documents. Here is how we would hope the idea would work. We would post photocopied documents to a volunteer. They would scan them. They would e-mail us the scanned document. We would probably have to send a minimum of about 30 pages a time to make it worth the museums while. If you have the ability to scan documents and want to help the museum please send your e-mail address to william@deisedesign.com . We wouldn't be in a great hurry to get documents scanned. If they were sent back within a month we would be more than happy. ============================================== 6. 3. If you live in Australia you may want to drop Discovery a line about running the show. I am forwarding an email from the IRL-Tipperary list. --- Original Message --- From: "Mary" <marymh@optonline.net> To: <IRL-TIPPERARY-L@rootsweb.com> Cc: Sent: Fri, 05 Sep 2003 10:43:25 -0400 Subject: [TIP] Discovery Channel & Famine program-- crossposted This is a reposting... after an email from an Australian list member, I thought I again would send this with the suggestion that Discovery get many emails from people requesting this program be shown internationally. The series MOMENTS IN TIME pretty much is geared toward US history, and may not be of interest to international viewers. Hence, it would not normally be shown anywhere other than the US. I got an email back stating it would take up to a week for me to get an answer. When/if I hear anything, I'll let the lists know. I just contacted Discovery Channel through their website to see when it would be on Discovery in Australia. This program was quite informational and moving, and definitely well worth watching. Since it probably wouldn't hurt the process if there were a few requests for this program, I'm also passing the information along to my genealogy mailing lists. The series is MOMENTS IN TIME, the particular show is "Famine to Freedom: The Great Irish Journey." The beginning of their contact pages is: <http://extweb.discovery.com/viewerrelations> Warning: you have to go through several pages before you actually write your message.
