I know that my great-grandfather William Humphries left Irvinestown, Fermanagh in around 1898 for north-east England. I believe that there was only a small Humphries family in Irvinestown. Does anyone have any information that can help me track this side of the family further back?

They changed their name to Givnin in the US, and I had a difficult time finding their original name. I remember hearing McGivney as a child...but I'm still not certain if that is the name. I understand that the name could also be McEvinney, so I'll give you my info and you can tell me if it rings a bell. Patrick was born in Ireland in 1824 to John and Bridget. I believe that Patrick came to America on September 11, 1848, aboard the Caleb Grimshaw, landing in Castle Garden, New York City. His wife, Mary Ann, was born in Ireland in 1832 to Patrick and Bridget Kane. Patrick and Mary Ann had 4 sons: William, b1862, Michael, b1867, Patrick, b1871, and Bernard, my ggrandfather, bMay 21, 1873. They lived in a "patch" near Mahanoy City, PA, and Patrick was a coal miner. That's all I have. If you can help me locate their birthplaces in Ireland, I would be thrilled. M! y sister and I visited Ireland last summer and we plan to return. We were in Counties Cork and Kerry, where our Healy relatives came from, and our trip was fantastic!! Looking forward to hearing from you, Joanne

Ok I just found you as Barbara Lewis in Ogden Utah. That is my place of birth, they are having some kind of a genealogy conference there about now. All my ancestors came from Ogden and Weber area. So how is that for finding at least Annie Erwin. That marriage record that does not have the brides name clearly written might be your lady. Boy, am I good someone was working on your line . Oh well at least i found the beginning of it. on to ancestry.com
If you are going to do any research in Ireland you have to know the townland where your folks came from. That goes for any time period at all. My folks came here 1793. I found my townland here on a tombstone of the first guy that came to his country. Name the born Tunien County Cavan Ireland. death date and place as Argyle Washington county , NY Dont try and turn it around as Cavan County it is not Correct. That is only place on earth where they use it as a rural address. Townland , County whatever , Civil Parish , Ireland. It is like a rural street address for locating you ancestors. Mine goes Tonyin then back to Drummartin and two more before I hit 1647. The Ulster province take is all of Moder free Ireland plus several counties in the south part of Ireland. If you folks were presbyterians and in the north you have a chance it they were catholics good luck. There are not many records for either beyond 1820. I found my Presbyterians in the land records. The only major place with records and any hope that I found. I found a marriage record, the results of wills. To follow the line follow the money. The oldest son gets the rental rights to the townland. He is to take care of the family until the townland no longer will support the family. The younger ones move on. It just so happens the minister of Cootehill married the oldest daughter and came to america with his bride and brother also a minister. Then my line was the oldest son for three generations. One land record has 6 generations of the family three on the male line then changes to the female line for another three. Names two uncles and their line to the grandfather of the first female of that line. Then I find in the index further back in time other townland who are my line and state so. My line went George, Samuel , James. Then Drummartin right next to Tonyin I found James his brothers their father John and another townland and the first three brothers to come from Scotland. I never say how or who or where in scotland out of respect for those who are doing the same line. They wanting to do there own research. So I let them. Now in Scotland I go back quite a few years also. I did not find the jump in Ireland. One cousin contacted me and gave me the proof by townland and how they got there. A real good piece of luck. Of all places that line came from China. It does not figure huh. good luck
